This study investigates the engagement of young people in foreign language learning. Specifically, engagement is defined as a metaconstruct consisting of the following components: cognitive, emotional, and social. An attempt was made to quantify these individual engagement components within task-based and communicative-oriented lessons. We employed electrocardiographic and accelerometric measurements to monitor learners’ physiological responses to engagement during regular German classes. The second part of the project was a questionnaire-based study measuring the subjective opinions of learners about their engagement. The results of the research support the adoption of a task-based approach. We observed the highest level of engagement during productive tasks, which can serve as a rationale for teachers to increase the number of...

Resumen:
Adopting a quasi-experimental design, this study investigated the effects of motivational interventions on second language (L2) willingness to communicate (WTC), self-confidence, and anxiety over a period of 27 weeks. A total of 391 Chinese junior secondary students were assigned to four instructional conditions: Instruction incorporating no motivational strategies (control condition), instruction supported by experience-related motivational strategies (Intervention 1), instruction utilizing vision-related motivational strategies (Intervention 2), and instruction drawing on experience-related and vision-related motivational strategies (Intervention 3). The effects of the interventions were assessed through measures administered at three timepoints to track changes in participants’ WTC, self-confidence, and anxiety. A combination of...

Resumen:
Addressing the pervasive issue of low engagement in Chinese junior high school English classrooms, this study evaluates the efficacy of gamified cooperative teaching (GCT) using a mixed-methods design. By integrating surveys, pre- and postintervention vocabulary tests, systematic classroom observations, and semi-structured interviews, the research examines the behavioral and cognitive shifts of a cohort of seventh-grade English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) learners. Findings indicate that the implementation of GCT was associated with a notable increase in active classroom participation and improved vocabulary retention compared with traditional instructional methods. Qualitative data from interviews and observations further suggest that the gamified collaborative framework effectively fostered student motivation and enhanced classroom...

Promoting English as a foreign language (EFL) students’ reading comprehension, improving their reading motivation, and reducing their anxiety have always been the focus of EFL researchers. Educational board games have gradually received attention from educators. Various studies have found that board game-based teaching can improve students’ learning performance, motivation, and classroom engagement, and contribute to increasing discussion. However, there are few discussions on board games in the field of EFL, so further discussion is necessary to fill the research gap of board games in EFL reading comprehension. This study developed a dual-hierarchical scaffolding board game activity framework integrating game-based learning (GBL) and scaffolding strategies, and used card board games as teaching materials to promote EFL students’...

Resumen:
The rise of translation technologies has transformed language learning, offering English-related majors valuable tools for overcoming linguistic barriers and enhancing translation performance. However, the interplay of key factors influencing the actual use of these technologies among this demographic remains underexplored. This study investigates the relationships between second language (L2) motivation, performance expectancy, and L2 grit in shaping the use behavior of translation technologies, focusing on their direct and mediating effects. Using data from 554 juniors and seniors from six universities, the study reveals that L2 motivation significantly predicts performance expectancy, L2 grit, and use behavior. Performance expectancy directly influenced L2 grit, both of which subsequently affected the use behavior. They also...

Resumen:
Researchers and teachers often invoke context to explain their particular research/teaching issues. However, definitions of context vary widely and the direct impact of the context is often unexplained. Based on research showing contextual differences in second language (L2) learner beliefs and interactional behaviors, the current project compared those factors in two distinct contexts: Chilean English as a foreign language (EFL) (n = 19) and Australian English as a second language (ESL) (n = 27) contexts. In this project, the learners completed a set of group discussion activities as part of their regular class work. They then completed a questionnaire pertaining to L2 motivation, perceptions of group work, and first language (L1) use. The group interaction data were analysed for: (1) the frequency of language-related episodes (LREs...

Resumen:
This study explores the interplay between task repetition and task motivation in second language (L2) writing, specifically focusing on syntactic complexity, accuracy, and lexical complexity (CAL). Aligning with Dörnyei’s call to balance cognitive and affective factors in task-based language teaching (TBLT), the research involved 100 advanced mid-level learners of English as a second language (ESL) aged between 18 and 20 years. Participants completed both simple and complex argumentative writing tasks in a counterbalanced order, with a one-week interval between tasks. A perception questionnaire was administered immediately after each task performance to validate cognitive task complexity manipulations. Subsequently, participants repeated the same tasks with the same time interval, complemented by the completion of a task motivation...

Resumen:
Motivation in language classrooms is often treated as an individual trait, yet periods of disruption reveal how strongly it is shaped through interaction. This study examines how learner and teacher (de)motivation was experienced and enacted during the return to offline English as a foreign language instruction following pandemic-related disruption. Using a convergent mixed-methods design, data were collected from learner and teacher questionnaires, regression analyses, Motivational Identity System-informed domain mapping, and teacher observational accounts. Findings indicate that learners maintained interest in English learning while experiencing moderate cognitive–emotional demotivational strain, suggesting vulnerability rather than pervasive demotivation. In contrast, teachers reported cumulative demotivational pressure arising...
