What counts as an acceptable answer in a vocabulary translation test? A preliminary study on the scoring schemes for learners of Chinese as a second/foreign language
Haiwei Zhang, Dian Prasetyo Adi (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: evaluación

Resumen:

The scoring scheme used in vocabulary translation tests remains a debate topic among researchers. This study aims to examine the impact of various scoring schemes on the reliability and validity of the Chinese Vocabulary Proficiency Test (CVPT), as well as on the scores and rankings of test-takers. A total of 170 Indonesian Chinese as a second/foreign language (CS/FL) learners were recruited to complete the CVPT, which required the participants to translate 100 Chinese words into Indonesian or explain their meanings in Indonesian. The translation responses were classified into four levels based on the semantic distance between such answers and the intended word meanings. Subsequently, five distinct scoring schemes were devised, encompassing strict and lenient 2-point schemes, strict and lenient 3-point schemes, and a 4-point scheme....

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enfoque por tareas

Resumen:

This qualitative study examined factors mediating a novice’s and an experienced English as a foreign language (EFL) teacher’s different adherence to critical components based on a tentative framework of fidelity of implementation (FoI) for task-based language teaching (TBLT). The 18-week study involved two teachers and 109 students at a Chinese University. Qualitative findings suggested that, compared with the experienced teacher, the novice teacher implemented with lower fidelity to three pedagogical principles, encouraging inductive (“chunk”) learning, focusing on form and providing negative feedback. Elicited data from observation logs and interviews indicated that factors influencing the teachers’ variation entailed their beliefs, teaching experience, and teacher–student relationship. Implications for upskilling and supporting...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: expresión escrita

Resumen:

This study examined the components of writing strategies employed in the story continuation writing task (SCWT) and investigated how these strategies related to different aspects of writing performance. Specifically, it adopted factor analyses to validate the strategy subscale of Ye et al.’s (2021) writing performance questionnaire and used structural equation modeling (SEM) to explore the relationship between strategy use and writing performance, as measured by the holistic writing scores and 11 textual indices. The data comprised 330 questionnaire responses and 330 SCWT essays produced by the same group of high school English as a Foreign Language learners selected through convenience sampling. Factor analyses identified three task-specific strategy components: reading_to_select , reading_to_organize , and content_developing . These...

Researching learners’ perceptions: The use of the repertory grid technique
Ishamina Athirah Gardiner, Andrew Littlejohn, Sarah Boye (2024)

Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: trabajo teórico

Temas: metodología de investigación

Resumen:

This article examines the use of the repertory grid technique as a method to investigate learner perceptions in language education research. An important issue raised in this article concerns how far a researcher’s agenda may be unintentionally imposed onto a research study which is investigating learners’ perceptions, and how far the ensuing data may provide an accurate representation of the learners’ viewpoints. A discussion of conventional research methods in perception research indicates the limitations of many structured research instruments such as questionnaires, surveys and interviews with regard to gaining reliable insights into learners’ views. The article considers the potential of using the repertory grid technique in perception research in terms of minimizing researcher influence and obtaining data that reflects learners...

Understanding the dynamic of student engagement in project-based collaborative writing: Insights from a longitudinal case study
Yao Zheng, Shulin Yu, Zhenan Tong (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: aprendizaje colaborativo

Resumen:

Collaborative writing is a pedagogical activity increasingly used in second language education. Despite the increased research on L2 students’ participation in collaborative writing, scant attention has been paid to student engagement in project-based collaborative writing and the possible engagement changes. This article reports on a longitudinal case study investigating the changes in student engagement of a group of five Chinese EFL undergraduates in project-based collaborative writing. The analysis of the data gathered by observations of group interactions, interviews, and student texts reveals three patterns of engagement changes: from active collaborators to ‘team escapers’, from a supporter to a ‘free rider’, and unchanged dedicated writers. The findings are discussed concerning the factors that could account for the engagement...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación

Resumen:

Demotivation (Dörnyei & Ushioda, 2011) and non-participation (Norton, 2001) characterize negative responses to classroom practice of a generally chronic nature. In this article, focus is directed to negativity that emerges within the context of a particular language developing activity, and which can be understood as a situated response to the activity’s demands. In conceptualizing negative responses at the activity level, disaffection – the negative face of engagement – is a construct of central importance. Drawing on data from a large-scale ethnographic project in secondary English classrooms in Sweden, in this exploratory case study disaffection (Skinner, 2016) is examined in the context of two language developing activities. Analyses reveal that disaffection can transform into active engagement, and that when called upon to...

Exploring learner engagement with languages (LX) within and beyond the English classroom
Giulia Sulis (2026)

Resumen:

Texto completo

Given the complex language repertoire of a large number of students within Austrian schools, particularly in lower secondary schools, it would be critically important to understand their practices, attitudes, and beliefs towards the multiple languages they encounter in their different areas of life. In this study I redefine and expand on the construct of engagement with language to incorporate an investigation of the different languages (hereafter LX) that learners come into contact with in and outside of school. I propose the construct of ‘engagement with LX’ to depict how learners utilize, reflect on, and relate to the LX in their repertoires in all contexts of their lives, including English as...

Direct and indirect data-driven learning: An experimental study of hedging in an EFL writing class
Xiaoya Sun, Guangwei Hu (2023)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

This article reports on an experimental study that set out to investigate and compare the effectiveness of a direct and an indirect approach to data-driven learning (DDL) in facilitating Chinese learners’ mastery of a challenging type of lexico-grammatical resource (i.e. hedges) in an undergraduate English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) writing class. The study adopted a pretest/posttest/delayed posttest randomized two treatment design. The two experimental groups received, respectively, direct and indirect DDL instruction in the use of hedges in English academic writing. The direct approach involved students in conducting guided searches and analyses of target hedges in online corpora, whereas the indirect approach featured the use of corpus-informed, paper-and-pen learning tasks. Within- and between-group analyses of the participants’...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

Although research into emotions has flourished in second language (L2) / foreign language (FL) learning in recent decades, few attempts have been made to examine learners as clusters based on their emotional profiles. The current study set out to first investigate the nature of 98 Grade-4-to-5 English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ emotional profiles, as represented by classroom anxiety, boredom, and enjoyment. The hierarchical clustering analysis revealed three distinct profiles: Negative Emotion (NE; 21.43%), High Enjoyment (HE; 46.93%), and high in both Enjoyment and Anxiety (EA; 31.63%). We then analysed FL motivation and family background (household income and parental education) between the three groups. We also compared the FL proficiency levels (listening, reading, speaking, and writing) between the three groups from...

Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario

Resumen:

This study introduces ‘seamless Chinese vocabulary learning’ (SCVL), a mobile-assisted initiative designed to bridge learners’ everyday experiences with formal language instruction. The SCVL framework integrates mobile technologies to foster vocabulary acquisition through artefact creation in a seamless learning environment. Employing a design-based research (DBR) methodology with mixed-methods design, 32 participants of varying proficiency levels took part in a 16-week intervention facilitated via the DingTalk platform. Quantitative analysis of 2,397 artefacts using the type–token ratio (TTR) indicated significant improvements in lexical variety across sentences, paragraphs, and essays across performance groups. Two-way ANOVA and post-hoc tests revealed significant main effects of time and group. A notable Group × Time interaction...
