Do beliefs matter? The relationship between beliefs about peer feedback and peer feedback outcomes on pronunciation
Ines A. Martin, Lieselotte Sippel (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar ✕

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación

Resumen:

This study investigated the relationship between learner beliefs about peer feedback and development of second language (L2) pronunciation skills after peer feedback on pronunciation had been used in the classroom. Seventy-four first-year learners of German were assigned to a peer feedback provider group, a peer feedback receiver group, and a control group. After completing a questionnaire designed to elicit learner beliefs about peer feedback, the provider group and the receiver group received general pronunciation training. Following the training, the provider group gave feedback to peers on their pronunciation and the receiver group listened to this feedback. Participants’ learning gains were measured by means of native speaker comprehensibility ratings of their productions both before and after the intervention. Statistical...

Metodología: trabajo teórico

Temas: inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

Texto completo

The rapid evolution of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has transformed language education, presenting opportunities to enhance efficiency, personalisation and learner engagement. The technologies have also disrupted educators’ conventional roles, necessitating the acquisition of artificial intelligence (AI)-informed digital literacy competencies. This conceptual article explores the integration of GenAI technologies in language education through the lenses of technological pedagogical and content knowledge and substitution augmentation, modification and redefinition frameworks. By examining AI’s affordances and limitations, the article highlights the irreplaceability of the human role...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

Although the role of emotions in willingness to communicate (WTC) of learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) has triggered abundant research in traditional, in-person language classes, little is known about how these emotions affect learners’ communication behavior in online classrooms. Adopting a mixed-method design, the present study investigated the effect of foreign language boredom (FLB) and foreign language enjoyment (FLE) on EFL learners’ L2 WTC in online classrooms. The data gathered through an online survey from 469 EFL learners were analysed through multiple linear regression, dominance analysis, and mediation analysis. The findings revealed that FLB had a considerably strong effect on L2 WTC, although this effect was to some extent diminished by FLE, FLB overshadowed learners’ online learning experience. To gain a...

EFL students’ profiles of English reading self-efficacy: Relations with reading enjoyment, engagement, and performance
Ke Yang, Zhengdong Gan, Miaomiao Sun (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar ✕

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: comprensión lectora

Resumen:

Reading self-efficacy in both first language (L1) or second language (L2) contexts has attracted increasing attention from researchers and practitioners in the past decades. However, prior self-efficacy studies have mainly adopted variable-centered approaches, and a global index of reading self-efficacy was created in these studies. Individual differences in reading self-efficacy and how they are associated with other learning factors remain under-explored particularly in an English as a foreign language (EFL) context. The purpose of this article was therefore to employ a person-centered approach to examine different patterns of EFL students’ English reading self-efficacy as identified by latent profile analysis (LPA) among 361 Chinese university students. We conducted analyses of variance to examine the differences in English reading...

The effect of collaborative writing in an EFL secondary setting
Izaskun Villarreal, Nora Gil-Sarratea (2020)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar ✕

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: aprendizaje colaborativo

Resumen:

Collaborative writing (CW) has been proven advantageous to enhance the second and foreign language skills of university students. However, little research to date has explored whether CW practices are fruitful for secondary school learners in foreign language (FL) contexts, a population characterized by low language proficiency levels, and few opportunities to engage with the FL. The present classroom-based study examines CW in this setting and aims to determine whether CW fosters language opportunities, operationalized as language-related episodes (LREs), which will allow learners in low-input scenarios to compose better texts. Two parallel intact classes were studied: a control group (n = 16) which produced an argumentative essay individually, and an experimental group (n = 16) which did so in pairs while recording their...

A review of the literature on language teacher researcher identity: Tensions and their resolutions
Simon Mumford, Kenan Dikilitaş (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar ✕

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Temas: identidad

Resumen:

The resolution of identity tensions has become an important theme in language teacher identity development, but an identity tension approach to language teacher researcher identity is missing from the literature. This systematic literature review examines the inherent tensions and conflicts in teacher researcher identity development. A search across multiple academic databases yielded studies that problematize identity conflicts and tensions. We reviewed a total of 25 studies published between 2008 and 2024 and analysed how challenges related to teachers’ engagement in research shape the experiences of teachers who engage in various forms of research. After compiling a list of tensions across studies, the authors used thematic analysis to determine three categories of tensions: those relating to the research itself, teacher...

Grammar teaching in ELT: A cross-national comparison of teacher-reported practices
Alexandra Schurz, Marion Coumel (2023)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar ✕

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

Texto completo

Today, the Common European Framework of Reference (2009), and with it the action-based approach, underlies English Language Teaching (ELT) curricula throughout Europe. However, actual teaching practices are likely to vary according to factors such as the educational level and supra-national differences, including legal guidelines and the level of extramural English, i.e. out-of-school use of English (Sundqvist, 2009). Those factors presumably influence the role of grammar teaching in foreign language classrooms, which has been the subject of continuous debate (see Graus & Coppen, 2016; Thornbury, 1999; Ur, 2011). Such potential differences in teacher-reported ELT practices across Europe have...

Resumen:

This study explores the development of intercultural competence among English as a foreign language (EFL) learners through critical incident task discussions. Participants included 72 intermediate-level students in a control group and 69 in an experimental group. Both groups completed a presurvey on intercultural competence, whereas the experimental group additionally engaged in weekly critical incident discussions and submitted their reflections. At the end of the intervention, both groups completed a postsurvey, and the experimental group provided open-ended responses about their experiences. Results revealed significant gains in intercultural competence for the experimental group, with no comparable improvement in the control group. Learners reported increased awareness of cultural values, norms, and differences, recognition of...

Taking literature off page! The effectiveness of a blended drama approach for enhancing L2 oral accuracy, pronunciation and complexity
Simona Floare Bora (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar ✕

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: dramatización

Resumen:

Texto completo

This article intends to add to the rising discussion related to the employment of authentic plays and drama within a high school compulsory curriculum for enhancing learners’ foreign language (L2) oral skills. In particular, it examines the pedagogical use of authentic contemporary plays for developing learners’ L2 oral production in terms of (1) complexity – syntactic and mean length of AS-units (MLAS) and (2) accuracy – global and pronunciation accuracy. For this purpose, a class of 10 final year high school students with a lower-intermediate to upper-intermediate level of language in an Italian context was exposed longitudinally to a blended-drama approach – the use of literary play scripts,...

Enhancing English-as-a-Foreign-Language Speaking Performance through Self-Regulated Strategy Instruction: Evidence from Chinese University Learners
Yawen Wang, Peijian Paul Sun (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar ✕

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: estrategias de aprendizaje

Resumen:

The present study investigated the effects of self-regulated strategy-based speaking instruction on English-as-a-foreign-language learners’ speaking performance and strategy use. Despite extensive research on self-regulated learning in various educational contexts, its application to second language speaking development remains underexplored. This explanatory mixed-methods quasi-experimental study employed self-report questionnaires, speaking assessments, and semi-structured interviews for data collection. A linear mixed-effects model results revealed that the experimental group (n = 54, receiving the self-regulated learning strategy-based intervention) demonstrated significantly greater improvement in speaking performance compared to the control group (n = 53, receiving traditional instruction), with effects sustained at delayed post...
