Resumen:
This study examines the design, implementation, and outcomes of a mobile-assisted Korean language (MAKL) blended course that aims to enhance learning of Korean as a foreign language (KFL) at university level. This course, which is grounded in the attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction (ARCS) motivational framework and a triarchic model of cognition, emotion, and language performance, integrates multimedia resources, LINE-based scaffolding, and culturally immersive peer interactions with the goal of promoting engagement and self-regulated learning. The findings of this research reveal that the participating students achieved significant linguistic growth, improved their emotional resilience, and developed adaptive strategies that enabled them to overcome linguistic, cognitive-affective, technical, and self-regulatory...

Resumen:
This study investigates the effects of two task factors (i.e. task complexity and task sequence) and an interlocutor factor (i.e. interlocutor familiarity) on Chinese English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ self-repair strategies during synchronous online task-based interaction. Four decision-making tasks were conducted to elicit oral interactions from 44 low-level proficiency EFL learners, who were required to complete the tasks in pairs in either a simple-to-complex sequence or a complex-to-simple sequence. Information about the learners’ familiarity with their partners was collected through interviews. Learners’ self-repair was analysed in terms of various recycling and replacement strategies. The results revealed that complex tasks facilitated learners in replacing items to solve problems, while the simple-to-complex task...

Resumen:
Foreign language teaching in distance education is administratively and pedagogically challenging; research on the perspectives of novice practitioners’ online teaching is also relatively scarce. This study explores how a novice Japanese teacher navigated and negotiated her professional development in a two-way virtual practitionership during her first online teaching. Data were collected from ongoing dialogue journals between the novice and her mentor followed by a semi-structured interview. Qualitative results indicate that pedagogically-sound and personalized digital tools can not only reduce the psychological distance between the teachers and students, but facilitate online teaching and learning via a performance-driven, standard-based curriculum. Informed by Action Research, the study reveals how both practitioners de/...

This qualitative study explores learners’ perceptions of the sources of language anxiety in Chinese as a second language (L2) learning in online environments, and how they cope with it. Nine participants, all of whom experienced high levels of L2 anxiety, were selected from a group enrolled in synchronous online Chinese classes during the Covid-19 pandemic. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that learning languages online presents a unique anxiety-provoking situation, resulting in several distinctive sources of L2 anxiety, such as a lack of self-discipline, difficulty adjusting to the transition, fear of online exposure, unnatural online environment for interaction, etc. In response, learners employed a variety of strategies, such as snacking, reviewing...

Resumen:
This study examines the evolution and regulation of group-level enjoyment of online collaborative language learning. Three Chinese undergraduate learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) collaborated to finish a series of English writing tasks via an online group enabled by WeChat, a popular social instant messaging app in Chinese-speaking communities. The data were collected in three sessions over a single semester using an idiodynamic approach for participants’ ratings of enjoyment intensity and stimulated recall interviews for participants’ descriptions of emotion regulation types. The data were analysed using deductive qualitative thematic analysis and quantitative descriptive analysis...

Resumen:
With the large increase in online English language learners, there is a need to explore how those learners practise self-regulated writing in such an autonomous learning context. This article reports on an exploratory study of self-regulated learning strategies used by two writing-proficiency groups (low and high) of Saudi English majors within an online context. Data were collected from a total of 50 (high proficiency = 23 and low proficiency = 27) students using video-stimulated recall of two online writing tasks. Quantitative analysis of the students’ stimulated recall data revealed that students in both proficiency groups used 11 self-regulated strategies to complete the two online writing tasks. Results also revealed a positive correlation between self-regulated learning strategy use and the students’ writing proficiency level....

This study investigates whether culturally adaptive teaching strategies (CATS) enhance instructional effectiveness in one-to-one online Chinese language teaching. Drawing on a controlled experimental design, 177 learners from South Korea (n = 42), Japan (n = 38), Vietnam (n = 32), the United States (n = 28), and several European countries (n = 37) were randomly assigned into either an experimental or a control group. The experimental group received eight culture-specific interaction protocols embedded within one-to-one teacher–learner interactions, while the control group followed the platform’s standard instructional script. Instructional effectiveness was assessed through both classroom interaction and learning outcomes. Classroom interaction was analysed through systematic coding of lesson recordings, focusing on learners’...
