Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

Texto completo

This study examines the evolution and regulation of group-level enjoyment of online collaborative language learning. Three Chinese undergraduate learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) collaborated to finish a series of English writing tasks via an online group enabled by WeChat, a popular social instant messaging app in Chinese-speaking communities. The data were collected in three sessions over a single semester using an idiodynamic approach for participants’ ratings of enjoyment intensity and stimulated recall interviews for participants’ descriptions of emotion regulation types. The data were analysed using deductive qualitative thematic analysis and quantitative descriptive analysis...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: estrategias de aprendizaje

Resumen:

With the large increase in online English language learners, there is a need to explore how those learners practise self-regulated writing in such an autonomous learning context. This article reports on an exploratory study of self-regulated learning strategies used by two writing-proficiency groups (low and high) of Saudi English majors within an online context. Data were collected from a total of 50 (high proficiency = 23 and low proficiency = 27) students using video-stimulated recall of two online writing tasks. Quantitative analysis of the students’ stimulated recall data revealed that students in both proficiency groups used 11 self-regulated strategies to complete the two online writing tasks. Results also revealed a positive correlation between self-regulated learning strategy use and the students’ writing proficiency level....

Culturally Adaptive Teaching in One-to-One Live Online Chinese Language Instruction: A Cross-Cultural Study of Learner Engagement and Learning Outcomes
Di Huang, Shuya Che, Yixiao Cui (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza en línea e híbrida

Resumen:

This study investigates whether culturally adaptive teaching strategies (CATS) enhance instructional effectiveness in one-to-one online Chinese language teaching. Drawing on a controlled experimental design, 177 learners from South Korea (n = 42), Japan (n = 38), Vietnam (n = 32), the United States (n = 28), and several European countries (n = 37) were randomly assigned into either an experimental or a control group. The experimental group received eight culture-specific interaction protocols embedded within one-to-one teacher–learner interactions, while the control group followed the platform’s standard instructional script. Instructional effectiveness was assessed through both classroom interaction and learning outcomes. Classroom interaction was analysed through systematic coding of lesson recordings, focusing on learners’...

Metodología: propuesta didáctica

Resumen:

Texto completo

‘I am too nervous to speak’: The impact of teacher questioning on L2 learners’ emotions in a synchronous online class based on AI emotion recognition
Jining Han, Yuying Yang, Beibei Ren (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

Emotional disengagement has attracted considerable attention in educational research, particularly research on online learning environments. Negative emotions can narrow learners’ attentional focus and suppress spoken output, making it difficult for teachers to gauge students’ actual oral abilities. This study investigates whether real-time recognition of learners’ facial emotions, combined with targeted questioning strategies, can foster more positive affect during synchronous online second language (L2) classes. Using a multitask convolutional neural network (MTCNN) for face detection and the VGGFace model for expression classification, we captured seven emotions from 61 Chinese undergraduates during one-on-one online interactions. Each teacher question was coded for type, mood, and subject pronoun. The results extend research on...

Nothing ventured, nothing gained: The impact of enjoyment and boredom on willingness to communicate in online foreign language classrooms

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

Although the role of emotions in willingness to communicate (WTC) of learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) has triggered abundant research in traditional, in-person language classes, little is known about how these emotions affect learners’ communication behavior in online classrooms. Adopting a mixed-method design, the present study investigated the effect of foreign language boredom (FLB) and foreign language enjoyment (FLE) on EFL learners’ L2 WTC in online classrooms. The data gathered through an online survey from 469 EFL learners were analysed through multiple linear regression, dominance analysis, and mediation analysis. The findings revealed that FLB had a considerably strong effect on L2 WTC, although this effect was to some extent diminished by FLE, FLB overshadowed learners’ online learning experience. To gain a...

Incorporating project-based language learning into distance learning: Creating a homepage during computer-mediated learning sessions
Fumie Kato, Ryan Spring, Chikako Mori (2023)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

This quasi-experimental study reports on the outcomes of a video-synchronous learning program in which an element of project-based foreign language learning was integrated. The project chosen was to cooperatively create a homepage. American students learning Japanese in the United States and Japanese students learning English in Japan made pairs and communicated in both their native and target languages via Skype to complete the project. The goals of this educational program were to increase intrinsic motivation in learners and improve their target language oral abilities, and identify challenges and problems with implementation. The program was conducted during the spring semester in 2017 and evaluated both quantitatively (via pre- and posttests) and qualitatively (via surveys and reflection papers). The results show that both groups...

The role of self-efficacy and task value in self-regulated learning strategies in online Chinese language learning
Lin Lin, Nuo Xu (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: aprendizaje autónomo

Resumen:

Self-regulated learning (SRL) is crucial to online language learning. Previous studies have shown that learners’ self-efficacy, task value, and SRL strategies improve SRL in online language learning contexts. However, how self-efficacy and task value affect different types of online SRL strategies is understudied. This study investigated the determinants of different types of online SRL strategies in online language learning courses to determine whether task value mediated self-efficacy and online SRL strategies. A total of 425 international university students who studied online Chinese language courses were recruited to complete self-report questionnaires measuring self-efficacy, task value and four types of online SRL strategies. Structural equation modelling showed that self-efficacy had significantly direct and positive effects...
