Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza en línea e híbrida

Resumen:

This study examines how learners’ English proficiency and individual difference factors (international posture, willingness to communicate, motivation, social presence) change, and how a small community develops, through an English course designed using the Community of Inquiry framework. Conducted over eight sessions at a university in Japan, the study involved 26 students who provided complete data for analysis. The main activities included two in-class group presentations and one individual video presentation via Google Chat. Pre- and post-tests on speaking proficiency and surveys on individual differences were administered. Reflection sheets were also collected after each activity. A paired t -test was used for the former, and SCAT (Steps for Coding and Theorization) was employed for the latter, followed by coding. Results showed...

Resumen:

Texto completo

Temas: juegos

Resumen:

Promoting English as a foreign language (EFL) students’ reading comprehension, improving their reading motivation, and reducing their anxiety have always been the focus of EFL researchers. Educational board games have gradually received attention from educators. Various studies have found that board game-based teaching can improve students’ learning performance, motivation, and classroom engagement, and contribute to increasing discussion. However, there are few discussions on board games in the field of EFL, so further discussion is necessary to fill the research gap of board games in EFL reading comprehension. This study developed a dual-hierarchical scaffolding board game activity framework integrating game-based learning (GBL) and scaffolding strategies, and used card board games as teaching materials to promote EFL students’...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario

Resumen:

This study investigated how repeated occurrences of novel words and the corresponding number of first-language in-text glosses influenced novel words processing and learning outcomes during second-language reading. Using eye-tracking, 48 college students in China read a 4,693-word graded reader. With 2 balanced versions, 24 words (12 glossed and 12 non-glossed) occurring 1 to 7 times served as target words. Results showed that, first, processing times of target words were shorter in the gloss condition, and combined processing times of target words plus glosses were shorter than the times of non-glossed target words; second, processing times of target words in two conditions showed different trajectories across repeated occurrences, whereas processing times of first-language glosses remained relatively constant; and third, first-...

Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

This study investigates the effects of generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) generated vs. human-written moral dilemma stories on English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ speaking skills, storytelling ability, and behavioral regulation, framed within the theoretical context of embodied cognition. A total of 120 university students were divided into two groups: the experimental group, which engaged with GPT-generated moral dilemma stories, and the control group, which worked with human-authored moral dilemma stories. Over an 11-week experimental period (including pre-test, 10-week intervention, and post-test), each group was exposed to weekly dilemma stories, followed by speaking assessments using IELTS Part 2 tasks. Analysis of covariance results demonstrated that the GPT group significantly outperformed the control group in...

Task repetition and corrective feedback via models and direct corrections among young EFL writers: Draft quality and task motivation
Hanne Roothooft, Amparo Lázaro-Ibarrola, Bram Bulté (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación

Resumen:

Second language (L2) writing research has demonstrated that young learners discuss linguistic issues, make use of feedback, and show a generally positive disposition toward writing tasks. However, many issues deserve further investigation. Regarding task implementation, few studies have been conducted with young learners writing individually, and few have compared different feedback types. Also, the focus of analysis has mostly been placed on students’ discussions; little is known about aspects such as draft quality and task motivation. To address these gaps, draft quality and task motivation were measured in 75 learners (aged 10–12 years) engaged in a three-stage writing task. They were divided into a task repetition group (n = 21), a group that received feedback via direct corrections (n = 30), and a group that received feedback via...

The effect of task choice on refusal speech act performance among Chinese EFL learners: A tripartite analysis of pragmatic knowledge, processing, and interaction
Yiman Wu (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: pragmática

Resumen:

This study investigates the effect of task choice for Chinese learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) on pragmatic performance in producing, processing, and negotiating refusal speech acts during interactive role-plays involving refusals to requests and invitations. Task choice was manipulated by varying the degree of cognitive autonomy support provided in generating the content of refusals, resulting in two distinct task conditions. In the ‘non-constraint’ condition, learners independently brainstormed refusal content, whereas in the ‘constraint’ condition, they formulated refusals following predetermined scripts provided by the researcher. Refusal performance was analysed across three dimensions: pragmatic knowledge, processing, and interaction. The findings reveal that task choice exerted a mixed effect on these dimensions...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: tecnología educativa

Resumen:

Texto completo

Student engagement is broadly defined by scholars as a multidimensional concept, making it challenging to measure and operationalize in teaching and learning contexts. This study focuses on foreign language (FL) teachers’ experiences and conceptualization of student engagement, as well as how they integrate technology based on their understanding of engagement. An interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) of 10 in-depth interviews reveals that teachers clearly distinguish between disengagement and passive engagement, as well as between task, classroom and academic engagement. Estonian FL teachers primarily perceive task engagement, analysed through the framework of cognitive engagement, as...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

Texto completo

The relationship between foreign language anxiety (FLA) and foreign language enjoyment (FLE) experienced during a creative collaborative oral English-as-a-foreign-language task, and the relationships between FLE/FLA and task speech fluency were investigated. The task was performed by mid-intermediate/high-intermediate English learners ( N = 43) in groups and culminated in 2-minute monologues by every participant, the breakdown (the ratio and length of mid- and end-AS unit pauses) and speed (mean length of run, articulation rate, and phonation time ratio) utterance fluency of which was measured. The relationship between FLA and FLE fluctuated between task parts, form negligible to medium-strong...

Applying intelligent personal assistants to develop fluency and comprehensibility, and reduce accentedness in EFL learners: an empirical study of Google Assistant
Jalil Fathi, Masoud Rahimi, Timothy Teo (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

Considering the contribution of intelligent personal assistant (IPA) platforms to English as a foreign language (EFL) speaking courses and the insufficiency of research in this regard, the current study applied a sequential explanatory mixed-methods approach to explore the impact of Google Assistant, an IPA platform, on EFL learners’ International English Language Testing System (IELTS) speaking test marks and their fluency, comprehensibility, and accentedness. Two intact classes at a language institute were chosen and randomly assigned to an IPA class with 20 EFL learners and a non-IPA class with 23 EFL learners. The IPA learners interactively and individually communicated with Google Assistant by giving commands/requests/questions, and the non-IPA learners communicated the same commands/requests/questions with their peers...
