Teaching English as a foreign language in rural multigrade classrooms: Unheard voices on diversity within diversity management
Juan de Dios Martínez Agudo (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: inclusión y equidad

Resumen:

Framed within cognitive and sociocultural perspectives on second language learning, which draws together individual, social and environmental factors, this phenomenological qualitative study aims to shed some light on the largely unknown reality of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) in rural multigrade classrooms as clear evidence of diversity within diversity, with a particular focus on English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers’ self-reported pedagogical practices and challenges. An ecological perspective on foreign language education, based on complexity theory, is adopted to understand the complex and dynamic relationships and interactions between language learners and the learning environment. While a qualitative approach was employed using open-ended questions, the content analysis technique was applied during the...

Boredom in online English language classes: Mediating variables and coping strategies
Mirosล‚aw Pawlak, Ali Derakhshan, Mostafa Mehdizadeh (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

Although boredom has been the subject of increasing scrutiny in second language (L2) learning recently, very little is known about how this emotion can affect teachers and students involved in Covid-19 prompted online English education. To address this gap, through maximum variation sampling, this qualitative study surveyed the opinions of 34 teachers and 256 students from universities across Iran to find out which class mode (online versus physical classes) and course type (content-based versus skills-based courses) were more boring, and what – if any – coping strategies these individuals used to get over boredom. The majority of teachers and students deemed online classes more boring than traditional, in-person classes. While teachers regarded skills-based and content-based courses as equally boring, most students believed that...

Greater complexity and higher efficiency: Effects of translanguaging during collaborative pre-task planning on EFL learners’ speaking performance
Xinran Luo, Peijian Paul Sun (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: translingüismo

Resumen:

Translanguaging has thrived as a pedagogy for second language (L2) acquisition because of its potential in maximizing L2 learners’ communicative repertoire. However, limited attention has been paid to how translanguaging can influence L2 speaking within the framework of task-based language teaching (TBLT). This study explored how different language use (i.e., L2 only and translanguaging) in collaborative pre-task planning contributed to L2 learners’ subsequent monologic speaking performance, as measured by complexity, accuracy, fluency (CAF), and idea units. The planning behaviours were also examined to offer explanations for the differences in learners’ speaking performance. Altogether 72 undergraduate students from a Chinese university voluntarily participated in this study. The results showed that translanguaging planning...

Incidental vocabulary learning from captioned viewing: A forest plot of word- and learner-related factors
Mark Feng Teng, Yachong Cui (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario

Resumen:

The present study aimed to bridge the gap in understanding the effects of captioned viewing on incidental vocabulary learning by using a forest plot to illustrate the influence of word-related factors and learner-related factors. Data were collected from 67 university students at a Chinese university. The results highlighted the significant effect of captioned viewing on incidental vocabulary learning and revealed the varied roles of both word- and learner-related factors in this process. Specifically, the study found that word frequency, word relevance, vocabulary breadth, phonological working memory, complex working memory, and English proficiency all play significant roles in vocabulary acquisition. These findings provide deeper insights into the relative value of captioned viewing for incidental vocabulary learning and identify...

Dispositions toward loving pedagogy, emotion regulation, and self-efficacy as predictors of EFL teachers’ work engagement: A multinational study
Yongliang Wang, Ali Derakhshan, Mehdi Solhi (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: profesorado

Resumen:

Previous research has certified the interconnection of psycho-affective factors and English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers’ emotions and practices. However, there is insufficient evidence regarding the correlates and determinants of teacher work engagement across cultures. To fill this gap, the present multinational study aimed to investigate the correlations and predicting roles of EFL teachers’ dispositions toward loving pedagogy (DTLP), self-efficacy, emotion regulation, and work engagement. A total of 779 EFL teachers were selected from China, Iran, and Turkey to complete the surveys. The results of confirmatory factor analysis and correlation analysis showed significant relationships among teachers’ DTLP, self-efficacy, emotion regulation, and work engagement. Moreover, multiple regression analysis suggested that teacher...

Factors predicting classroom WTC in English and French as foreign languages among adult learners in Spain
Elvira Barrios, Irene Acosta-Manzano (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

This study aimed to identify associations and predictors of willingness to communicate (WTC) of adult foreign language (FL) learners and whether they are contingent upon the FL being learned. To this end, our research investigated learner variables associated with WTC in adult FL learners of English and of French in an under-researched field of WTC studies in Spain. More specifically, the following variables were studied: gender, age, level of multilingualism, perceived relative standing in the class, language proficiency, teacher’s use of the FL in class, out-of-class foreign language use (OCFLU) and the two emotions of foreign language enjoyment (FLE) and foreign language classroom anxiety (FLCA). Of the 9 independent variables examined, FLCA and language proficiency were found to be predictors of the WTC of both English and French...

How storytelling can work as a pedagogy to facilitate children’s English as a foreign language learning
Thao Thi Phuong Nguyen, Louise Gwenneth Phillips (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: storytelling/narración

Resumen:

Storytelling has a long tradition in education including language learning and teaching because of its extensive benefits in language development. In second and foreign language education, stories and storytelling have been integrated into school curricula to enhance language development; however, there is scarce empirical evidence about how storytelling facilitates children’s English as a foreign language (EFL) learning and its potential as a holistic pedagogy. This article explores a living educational theory (Whitehead & McNiff, 2006) of how storytelling works as a pedagogy in storytelling workshops with an English class at a private tuition centre in Vietnam to facilitate children’s EFL learning. Key pedagogical elements identified through the living theory methodology included storytelling as: a responsive strategy;...

Exploring teacher mediation and learner responsiveness in small-group online dynamic assessment for L2 academic writing development
In Ji (Sera) Chun (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: evaluación

Resumen:

Research on group dynamic assessment has predominantly focused on whole-class mediation, with limited attention given to alternative formats such as in smaller groups. Grounded in sociocultural theory, the present study explored how a small-group online dynamic assessment using video conferencing (i.e., Zoom) and Google Docs enhanced the English academic writing abilities of university-level second language (L2) learners. Twelve students in an intermediate academic writing course were divided into four groups, each consisting of three to four students. An adjusted cumulative group dynamic assessment approach was implemented over three week cycles. The analysis examined both quantitative and qualitative changes in teacher mediation and student responsiveness, as observed in relevant episodes both within and across sessions. For the...

Learning specialized vocabulary in the second language: Does transfer from the first language help?
Jie Wang, Yen Na Yum (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario

Resumen:

Learners entering higher education may learn specialized vocabulary of new disciplines in their second language (L2) with or without support from their first language (L1). However, these learners cannot rely on an established conceptual representation in L1 when learning L2 specialized vocabulary. The effects of learning a new concept in L1 prior to learning and testing the same concept in L2 are yet unclear. The present study compared the effectiveness of L1-mediation and L2-repetition word learning methods randomly assigned to 75 bilingual adults. Participants learned subject-specific specialized vocabulary through reading a series of definition sentences in two learning episodes a week apart. The L1L2 group ( N = 31) first learned L1 words on Day 1 and then their L2 translation equivalents on Day 2, while the L2L2 group ( N = 44)...

Teacher–student relationships moderate the link between socioeconomic status and foreign language learning: Evidence from China
Lihong Ma, Leifeng Xiao, Zhi Liu (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: inclusión y equidad

Resumen:

The importance of socioeconomic status (SES) in foreign language learning has received increasing attention. However, previous research mainly examined the direct link between SES and foreign language learning, and few explored what might mitigate this link, especially in collectivistic culture. Based on social capital theory and the attachment theory, this study explored the moderating role of teacher–student relationships (TSRs) in the link between SES and English learning in China. Data were collected from 1,181 grade 8 and 300 grade 11 students in China using self-reported SES questionnaire, TSRs scale, and English achievement test. The results show that TSRs negatively moderated the association between SES and English performance of Chinese students both in grade 8 and grade 11, but the moderating effect of TSRs was slightly...
