Resumen:
Research on smart education has predominantly focused on macro-level concepts and frameworks, such as core principles and system architectures, while offering limited guidance for discipline-specific integration and practical implementation. This study addresses two critical gaps: (1) how an M.Ed. course can be enhanced through intelligent educational technologies, and (2) whether a smart classroom teaching mode can effectively improve M.Ed. students’ instructional design competence, particularly in terms of precision and professionalism.Adopting a pedagogically oriented approach rather than an algorithmic one, this study proposes a three-dimensional framework encompassing learning...

Resumen:
Task design features have different effects on second language (L2) production and can be adopted for different pedagogical purposes. However, the synergistic effects of task features were left unexplored in the extant task-based literature. The present study investigated the synergistic effects of two task design features, namely, prior knowledge and reasoning demands, on the writing performance of Chinese learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). Fifty EFL learners were invited to complete two writing tasks, with varying reasoning demands, under one of two conditions, namely, with prior knowledge available or without prior knowledge available. Their written texts were analysed in terms of complexity, accuracy, fluency, and communicative adequacy, to reflect the multi-componential nature of task performance. The results...

Resumen:
Drawing upon the dialogic theory, this study investigated the effects of writing personal experience narratives (PENs) of critical events on English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ narrative competence development. The study collected a multiple source of data from 66 students at one Chinese university, including PENs of critical events, reflective journals, and semi-structured interviews. PENs were concerned with students’ critical events during the transitional periods of life from secondary to higher education, whereas reflective journals and interviews were used to gain students’ perceptions of narrative writing and narrative competence. Narrative competence was assessed via narrative writing performance, narrative coherence, and narrative cohesion. It was found that writing PENs over a period of two semesters aided EFL...

Resumen:
Gestures are widely recognized as an integral aspect of multimodal communication and language learning. However, the conditions under which they effectively support learning remain unclear. This study investigated when gesture matters in English as a foreign language (EFL) learning through three controlled experiments. Experiment 1 (3 × 2 design) examined the effects of gesture type (iconic, deictic, metaphoric) and production mode (human tutor vs. virtual agent). Experiment 2 compared gesture engagement (watch vs. imitate), while Experiment 3 tested gesture timing (synchronous, gesture-first, misaligned). University-level EFL learners participated in 30-minute instructional sessions, with outcomes measured in language recall, pronunciation accuracy, and cognitive load using multivariate analysis of covariance. Results showed that...
