Resumen:
Virtual exchanges (VE) are gaining popularity as an opportunity to provide learners with authentic language and intercultural experiences mediated by technology. This article presents the results of a VE project aimed at developing intercultural and digital competences among Spanish Language Teaching (SLT) learners and trainee teachers. Among the main components of the project, the design, implementation and monitoring of telecollaborative tasks constitute key elements for the success of the project. The VE was carried out with Spanish learners in Ireland and Spanish and Latin American trainee teachers in Spain. The results collected through a post-questionnaire (n = 22) and a multimodal analysis of intercultural digital artefacts (n = 9), created by the participants, show that the VE had a positive impact on the Intercultural...

This study explores the perceptions of learners and instructors regarding mobile learning tasks, comparing WhatsApp and Zoom as platforms for facilitating second language (L2) speaking and overall language skills. Grounded in sociointeractionist theories of second language acquisition (SLA), the research involved novice-high Spanish learners who engaged in weekly Communication Activities via WhatsApp text messaging or Zoom video calls. Findings indicate that while both platforms provided valuable opportunities for language practice outside the classroom, participants preferred face-to-face interactions via Zoom. Despite the familiarity with text messaging, WhatsApp was less favored due to...

Temas: ChatGPT
Resumen:
The emergence of ChatGPT has sparked growing interest in artificial intelligence within the educational field. However, expectations regarding its potential are tempered by uncertainty about its real implications, especially in the teaching of Spanish as a Foreign Language (SFL), where empirical research on the topic remains scarce. This study aims to identify the opinions of SFL teachers regarding the integration of ChatGPT as a teaching tool, the ways they use this chatbot, and the limitations they perceive for its integration. Through a questionnaire applied to 159 teachers, data were collected on various variables related to the use of ChatGPT. A total of 47% of participants reported using ChatGPT in their teaching practice. The most common applications include generating questions for lesson planning and searching for cultural...

Resumen:
Drawing on models of first language writing and models of second language (L2) oral task performance, this quasi-experimental study investigated the effect of pre-task planning (PTP) on the product of computer-based L2 writing against a no-planning (NP) condition with the total time-on-task controlled for. It also examined the possible influence of writers' strategy preferences on the effect of PTP. The study adopted a within-group design. Forty-three participants were required to complete two argumentative essays on a computer with one produced under the PTP condition and the other in the NP condition. A post-task questionnaire was used to collect participants' strategy preferences. Statistical analyses showed that PTP affected only...

Resumen:
Accomplishing oral interactive workplace tasks requires various language abilities, including pragmatics. While technology-mediated tasks are thought to offer many possibilities for teaching and assessing second language (L2) pragmatics, their effectiveness – especially those facilitated by an AI agent (artificial intelligence agent) – remains to be explored. This study investigated how 47 tertiary-level learners of English as a second language (ESL) performed on an oral interactive task that required them to make requests to their boss in two distinct modalities. Each participant completed the same task with a fully automated AI agent and with a human interlocutor in a face-to-face format. Findings showed that both modalities elicited language use relevant to the pragmatics target. However, fully automated interactions were found to...

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario
Resumen:
Vocabulary learning is basic for mastering a foreign language. Many students learn foreign language (FL) vocabulary via instructional videos outside of traditional classrooms, as there is no limit to time or space. Cues (e.g. coloring, highlighting, arrows, and text) are design features in instructional videos that not only guide learners' attention, but also facilitate the organization and integration of information. However, little is known about how visual cues and text cues influence FL vocabulary learning from instructional videos. In Experiment 1, we tested the effects of synonym text cues presented before the instructional video and visual cues during the video. Effects were measured in terms of participants' judgments of learning and objective measures of learning performance (indicated by accuracy on immediate and delayed...

Resumen:
As digital or video gaming has grown in popularity around the globe in the last few decades, attention to its potential as a means to learn L2s (second, foreign, or additional languages) has grown, as evidenced by an increase in academic journal-based treatment of research in DGBELLT (digital game-based and enhanced second/foreign language learning and teaching), alongside monographs and edited volumes. To identify common findings and research trends, we conducted a review of recent research and scholarship in the young field published between January 2021 and December 2024 inclusive in major academic journals and edited volumes. We ultimately selected 76 pieces for the review, categorizing them into five types or foci: reviews and meta-analyses, studies of game-enhanced L2 learning and L2 gaming, game-enhanced pedagogy, L2 learning...

Resumen:
Digital Applied Linguistics (DAL) is an innovative and rapidly evolving field that integrates advanced technologies, particularly generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), into language education, acquisition, and research. This study first systematically synthesized research on language learning, teaching, and teacher development, as well as potential future directions in GenAI-driven Digital Applied Linguistics, drawing on 23 recent and relevant studies. Employing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, findings indicated that digital technologies, particularly GenAI, have significant potential to enhance and transform language learning and teaching. Additionally, the study adopted semi-structured interviews for three focal cases from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau....
