Temas: juegos
Resumen:
En este juego predomina la expresión oral como destreza que debe desarrollar, aprovechando la obligación que se le impone de pensar rápidamente, puesto que existe un límite de tiempo que corre en su contra. Dependiendo del nivel escogido, será mayor o menor el tiempo del que dispone el concursante, y de este modo un alumno avanzado tendrá que apresurarse más que aquellos que se inician en el español, a los que se les otorgarán más minutos.

Resumen:
Within the same learning context, learners’ outcomes in terms of oral fluency vary greatly. This study tracked the relative contributions that first language (L1) and initial second language (L2) fluency skill and working memory (WM) made to L2 fluency development. We assessed the performance of French-speaking Grade 6 learners’ (n = 47, mean age: 11) in a 10-month intensive English program in Quebec, Canada using a picture-cue monologic task based on The Suitcase Story and a semi-structured interview based on the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI). Working memory was assessed using a backward digit span task and phonological memory (PM) via non-word repetition and serial non-word recognition tasks. Overall, results suggest that L1 fluency, WM and PM played only a minor role in learners’ L2 fluency outcomes, whereas learners’ pre-...

Temas: motivación
Resumen:
This study investigates how speaking demotivation is experienced and interpreted by Iranian English as a Foreign Language learners and teachers through the lens of Self-Determination Theory (SDT), with particular attention to autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Thirty participants (15 learners and 15 teachers) from two private language institutes in Iran took part in semi-structured interviews. Data were analysed using theory-informed thematic analysis. The findings indicate that speaking demotivation emerges as a contextually mediated process shaped by the interaction between learners’ psychological experiences and instructional conditions. Learners primarily emphasised affective and...

We investigated the effectiveness of two different teaching methods based on two different theoretical views of how languages are learned in oral proficiency after three years of L2 French instruction. The first method is commonly used in the Netherlands and is in line with structure-based (SB) principles, viewing language as a set of grammar rules that need to be explained to achieve accuracy, usually in the L1. The second method aligns with dynamic-usage-based (DUB) principles in that language is viewed as a set of conventionalized routines that are learned through frequent exposure and the L2 is spoken exclusively in class. In a large study (Rousse-Malpat et al., 2019), the DUB method proved...

Metodología: estudio empírico
Temas: motivación
Resumen:
This study examines a potential tension in the application of self-determination theory to an extensive reading-enhanced speaking course in an English-as-a-foreign-language context. Although extensive reading is widely assumed to foster autonomous motivation by satisfying learners’ basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, its implementation within formal instructional settings often involves mandatory reading quotas and graded components that may introduce controlling pressures. Drawing on data from 142 Japanese university English majors enrolled in a year-long extensive reading-integrated speaking course, this study investigated changes in motivational regulation and basic psychological needs satisfaction using Bayesian analyses. Results revealed strong evidence for increases in all three basic...

Metodología: propuesta didáctica
Temas: estructuras comparativas

While most empirical studies have investigated the improvement of learners’ L2 spoken proficiency via speaking-related interventions, the present study examined the same topic through a different modality: listening. Ninety-five first-year tertiary-level students of English as a second language (ESL) in Hong Kong participated in this three-month experiment. They were separated randomly into three groups: (A) narrow listening with latitude for learners to choose their own materials; (B) narrow listening without such latitude; and (C) a control group without narrow listening. All participants attended a compulsory course on English phonology. Narrow listening was set as homework for the two experimental groups A and B. The overall results indicated that groups A and B improved significantly more than group C in pronunciation and fluency...

Temas: traducción audiovisual
Resumen:
Reverse dubbing represents the process of creating and presenting a video clip that translates the original first-language (L1) spoken dialogues to second/foreign language. This study investigated its effects on English speaking proficiency and English learning motivation (ELM). Two intact classes of English as a foreign language (EFL) college students were randomly assigned to either the reverse dubbing (RD) group or the comparison group. In the course of an academic semester, the RD group completed two RD tasks, for each of which they, in groups, (1) selected a Mandarin L1 video clip, (2) translated the subtitles to English, (3) rehearsed the translated subtitles, (4) created a new soundtrack, (5) combined the video clip with the new soundtrack to produce the dubbed video clip, and (6) played the dubbed video clip in class and then...
