Spanish language teaching and ideological tensions in the New Latino South
Inmaculada Gómez Soler, Ronald Fuentes (2025)
Journal of Spanish Language Teaching
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Temas: artículo política lingüística

Resumen:

Texto completo

This article examines the experiences of Spanish high school teachers in Tennessee, a state in the New Latino South where anti-immigrant sentiments and rejection of languages other than English are commonplace. Through a narrative inquiry approach, we explored how these contextual realities impacted teachers' perceptions of their roles and how they shaped their pedagogical goals. Participants' narratives reveal that, despite sharing similar realities at the macro level (the U.S. and the New Latino South), teachers' experiences were dependent on two factors at the meso level (their communities and schools). Teachers in urban areas and private schools worked in less challenging environments. Teachers in rural areas,...

Texto completo

In this report, I describe the research and curricular changes I am implementing to deal with issues of inequity encountered by Black students in the Spanish program I direct at Western Michigan University. In the first stage, a comprehensive analysis of student demographics, enrollment, and academic performance over six years revealed that Black and African American students begin Spanish education at high rates but are less likely to advance to courses beyond second-year Spanish and more likely to obtain lower final grades than other groups. These findings are consistent with literature showing similar patterns of participation and achievement among Black students in...

Resumen:

Texto completo

Microaggressions are subtle offensive mechanisms that can be intentional or unintentional (Pierce, 1970). For the past 50 years, researchers have documented their damaging effects on peoples? mental and physical health. In this report, we focus on microaggressions in the Spanish classroom and with Latino/Latinx/Hispanic students, including their damaging effects within the context of changing demographics in the United States, how they impact our language classrooms, and how they can be mitigated through language curricula that promote intercultural citizenship. Also, we share strategies and suggestions to counter microaggressions in the language classroom, grounded in the...

Racializing Latinx bilinguals in K-12 language learning classrooms in the United States
Aris Moreno Clemons, Almeida Jacqueline Toribio (2021)
Journal of Spanish Language Teaching
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Temas: artículo diseño curricular

Resumen:

The present study applies critical race theory and a raciolinguistic perspective to understand the orientations of language programs in the United States towards developing bilingualism. More specifically, the study draws on survey and in-depth interview data from self-identified Latinx Spanish-English bilinguals who participated in English-dominant and bilingual curricula. We establish that the practices and policies of extant programs are grounded in injurious ideologies that result in the racialization of Latinx students. In particular, the results point to multiple factors?student assessment and placements, teachers? linguistic and social profiles, and instructors? corrective feedback?all of which racialize heritage Spanish speakers by essentializing and homogenizing them and by linking them to notions of ?other?, often with...

Language and Antiracism: An Antiracist Approach to Teaching (Spanish) Language in the USA
José L. Magro (2023)
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: libro

Temas: libro discriminación y racismo

Resumen:

Beginning from the premise that being non-racist ?and other 'neutral' positions? are inadequate in the face of a racist society and institutions, this book provides language educators with practical tools to implement antiracist pedagogy in their classrooms. It offers readers a solid theoretical grounding for its practical suggestions, drawing on work in critical race theory, critical sociolinguistics and language ideology to support its argument for antiracist pedagogy as a necessary form of direct action. The author contends that antiracist pedagogy is a crucial part of the project of decolonizing universities, which goes beyond tokenistic diversity initiatives and combats racism in institutions that have historically helped to perpetuate it. The author's pedagogical suggestions are accompanied by online resources which will help...

Raciolinguistics and Spanish language teaching in the USA: from theoretical approaches to teaching practices
Gabriella Licata, Tasha Austin, Aris Moreno Clemons (2023)
Journal of Spanish Language Teaching
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Temas: artículo discriminación y racismo

Resumen:

Raciolinguistic perspectives have moved to the forefront of educational linguistics, examining how the co-construction of race and language (re)produce damaging ideologies from broader societal constructs in the classroom and beyond. Raciolinguistic theory helps us to unravel the white supremacist foundations of language education and policy. In this paper, after outlining the theoretical underpinnings of a raciolinguistic perspective, we offer three examples of applied practice demonstrating the power of denaturalizing the co-construction of race and language in linguistics and language teaching through multidisciplinary approaches. While we resist peripheralizing the role of racialization in our experiences teaching the Spanish language and preparing language teachers, we argue that the incorporation of a raciolinguistic perspective...

Experiences of African American Spanish Learners in the US: mitigating racialization and fostering belonging through an inclusive curriculum
Andrea Easley Morris, Ben Evans (2023)
Journal of Spanish Language Teaching
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Temas: artículo estudiantes afroamericanos

Resumen:

This study investigates experiences and investments in Spanish language learning among African American graduates of a university in the southeastern US. In response to evidence of African American underrepresentation in this field, findings will forward those factors which may encourage advanced Spanish study and create a sense of belonging as learners and speakers. Data emerges from eight language learning autobiographies, each written by a self-identifying African American who completed a Spanish major or minor at university. Inductive coding and narrative analysis methods yield the following themes: (1) Limited family/community connections to TL speakers, but wide family interest/support for language learning; (2) Inspiring teachers, formal learning environments, and content, but with significant content omissions; (3) Navigation...
