Resumen:

With the growth of artificial intelligence (AI) tools available to anybody with internet access, English language learners are increasingly turning to these resources to improve their writing skills. By examining their utilization of AI tools to improve their writing proficiency, this research examines the perspectives of Turkish English language learners enrolled in a preparatory program at a state university in Istanbul. Using a Q methodological approach, researchers created a set of 40 statements based on a literature study, which were then sent to 55 consenting individuals. Qualitative information was also collected by interviewing five students in depth. The analysis indicated a growing tendency among students to utilize AI tools for writing assignments, highlighting advantages such as assistance in translation, idea generation,...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: profesorado

Resumen:

Recent reviews of the application of positive psychology (PP) in language education have identified a theoretical debate, the efficacy of PP interventions, and the nexus between culture and PP interventions as the three main underexplored issues. Furthermore, the need for PP to broaden its scope to include language teachers has been highlighted in the relevant body of literature. In response to these lacunae, the current explanatory sequential mixed-methods study examined the interplay of self-efficacy, self-concept, and motivation among 286 Iranian language teachers, who were recruited through proportionate stratified random sampling, to test the validity of the E4MC (empathy, emotions, emotional intelligence, engagement [E4], motivation [M], and character strengths [C]) model of PP. Subsequently, a qualitative phase was designed in...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación

Resumen:

This study examines a potential tension in the application of self-determination theory to an extensive reading-enhanced speaking course in an English-as-a-foreign-language context. Although extensive reading is widely assumed to foster autonomous motivation by satisfying learners’ basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, its implementation within formal instructional settings often involves mandatory reading quotas and graded components that may introduce controlling pressures. Drawing on data from 142 Japanese university English majors enrolled in a year-long extensive reading-integrated speaking course, this study investigated changes in motivational regulation and basic psychological needs satisfaction using Bayesian analyses. Results revealed strong evidence for increases in all three basic...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

Self-regulated reading-to-write (R2W) can be portrayed as learners’ proactive learning of useful elements (e.g. content, rhetorical features, and conventions) from reading by using strategies, which is an effective mechanism connecting reading and writing, to improve their writing competence. In the present study, six major types of self-regulated R2W strategies, i.e. mining reading, writerly reading, cognitive strategies, purposive reading, recalling while writing, and peer revision reading that can contribute to writing competence were included in the proposed self-regulated R2W framework. Importantly, a self-regulated R2W scale was established to understand the impacts of four types of strategies. Participants were 458 primary students (9 to 13 years old, M = 10.12, SD = .62) in Hong Kong. They completed the self-regulated R2W...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: estrategias de aprendizaje

Resumen:

While research into various dimensions of language learning strategies has been thriving over the recent years, grammar learning strategies (GLS) have largely remained under-explored. The present mixed methods research aimed to explore GLS in the three stages of classroom grammar tasks, while striving to determine the sequence of GLS and their contribution to grammar proficiency. In the qualitative phase, 13 participants partook in stimulated recall and semi-structured interviews after completing consciousness-raising (CR) tasks. Then, the grounded theory (GT) methodology was applied to conceptualize a theoretical model. For the quantitative phase, a modified version of Pawlak’s Grammar Learning Strategy Inventory and a grammar proficiency test were administered to 249 participants. The theoretical model of GT indicated that learners...

Resumen:

Self-efficacy, the belief in one’s own capability, is an important element in students’ academic success and positive functioning in school settings. However, self-efficacy, like motivation, is easily frustrated by the social environment in school. Although studies have investigated the cross-theoretical relationship between self-efficacy and autonomy support in English as a foreign language (EFL) classrooms in a university and a secondary school setting, it has not been examined in the primary school context. To address the research gap, the present study explored the relationship that might exist between self-efficacy and perceived autonomy support in primary EFL classrooms. The participants were 454 fifth-grade students from three primary schools in Japan and Taiwan. They responded to scales measuring academic self-efficacy and...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

This study examines the effectiveness of a contextualized intervention guided by the Situated Academic Writing Self-Efficacy Scale (SAWSES) in enhancing writing self-efficacy among English as a foreign language (EFL) undergraduates. Employing a mixed-methods design, the research involved 81 first-year students from a comprehensive university in Southeast China. Participants were divided into an experimental group (n = 41), which engaged in a SAWSES-based intervention incorporating reflective tasks, peer feedback, and process-oriented writing support, and a control group (n = 40), which received teacher-fronted, lecture-based, accuracy-focused instruction. Quantitative data from preintervention and postintervention surveys, supplemented by qualitative analysis of reflective journals, revealed significant gains in writing self-efficacy...

Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

Teacher cognition has attracted increased attention among second language (L2) researchers and practitioners, likely because of its potential consequences for classroom practices, such as teaching and assessment. Prior research has revealed links between teacher beliefs about pronunciation teaching and teachers’ own experience (e.g. amount of teacher training and teaching experience). However, no research has to date focused on how teachers’ experience and their beliefs are intertwined, possibly affecting teacher assessments of L2 speakers’ pronunciation. For this study, 77 Japanese pre-service teachers of English completed an online questionnaire examining their beliefs about the teaching of English pronunciation and eliciting details about their L2 teaching and learning experience. Additionally, pre-service teachers assessed 40...

Resumen:

Ambiguity tolerance reflects learners’ abilities to accept unpredictable and unfamiliar contexts in language learning without frustration and discomfort. However, it has yet to be thoroughly explored when associated with engagement, motivation, and peer collaboration collaborative learning in course of English as a foreign language (EFL) learning. Relying on questionnaire survey data, this study adopts structural equation modeling techniques based on 1,200 Chinese high school students’ responses. The findings ascertain that engagement and volition significantly and positively predict ambiguity tolerance and learning effectiveness. Additionally, ambiguity tolerance predicts learning effectiveness. For peer collaborative learning, ambiguity tolerance and learning effectiveness are also critical predictors. They significantly and...
