Resumen:
Second language (L2) writing is a complex process involving cognitive, emotional, and linguistic activities, which might be shaped by learners’ personal traits and psychological states. However, limited effort has been devoted to reveal how different dimensions of writing self-efficacy and motivational constructs interact to influence positive L2 writing experiences, particularly in non-English contexts such as Chinese as a second language (CSL). To address this gap, this study draws on control-value theory to explore the influence of L2 writing self-efficacy (linguistic, performance, and self-regulatory efficacy) and motivational constructs (the ideal and ought-to L2 selves) on positive writing experience among CSL learners. This research employs a dual analytic approach, combining structural equation modeling (SEM) and psychological...

Resumen:
Higher education serves as a fundamental driver of social progress and individual professional development. This study examines the motivational profiles of 112 Spanish-speaking college students who are learning Chinese as a foreign language, focusing on the factors that influence their decision to study this language and their academic satisfaction within the university context. The study is based on an analysis of data collected from these students, using statistical analyses to explore relationships between motivational factors, academic satisfaction, and academic performance. The findings reveal that intrinsic motivations—such as interest in Chinese culture and traditions, personal growth, and intellectual challenge—predominate over extrinsic motivations, including prospective employment opportunities, when selecting Chinese as a...

Resumen:
Motivation to learn languages strongly correlates with language achievement, and the school context has a great influence on the motivation of young learners (YLs). A key rationale for the implementation of content and language integrated learning (CLIL) programs, therefore, was pupil motivation. Very few studies have measured motivation in this context, especially in primary schools. Even fewer have done so in bilingual areas, where the continuation of widespread use of the regional language often depends on its presence in the school system and where CLIL reduces this presence. To address these gaps, motivation towards the foreign language (FL), English, and the regional language, Basque, was measured in 399 YLs of English (aged 10–12 years) in Basque immersion schools. The learners were divided into a CLIL group (n = 230), with...

Resumen:
This study aims to test a mediation model to understand how the second language motivational self-system (L2MSS) affects second language (L2) proficiency and intercultural communication competence (ICC) through the mediating effects of foreign language enjoyment, anxiety, and boredom among English as a foreign language (EFL) learners in China. A total of 2,713 Chinese EFL learners, comprising 1,376 English majors and 1,337 non-English majors, voluntarily participated in the present study. Structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis was conducted to analyse the collected data. Additionally, a multigroup SEM approach was applied to compare potential differences between the two major types in the hypothesized relationships. The results revealed that the impacts of the ideal self and learning experience positively and directly predicted...

Resumen:
With the rise of positive psychology, increasing attention has been directed toward the role of positive emotions in fostering personal growth and well-being in second and foreign language learning. Although the PERMA and PERMA+4 frameworks offer valuable perspectives on well-being, they primarily emphasize positive constructs, leaving negative emotions and fixed mindsets largely unexplored. This gap is significant, as both positive and negative emotions, as well as growth and fixed mindsets, jointly shape learners’ psychological experiences. This study examined the effects of growth and fixed language mindsets on university students’ sense of accomplishment in English learning, with positive and negative achievement emotions and student engagement serving as sequential mediators. Using a short-term longitudinal design, large-scale...

Resumen:
The interconnectedness of reading and writing necessitates a dynamic approach to learning, particularly for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Self-regulated reading-to-write (SR-R2W) emerges as a promising approach, empowering EFL learners to consciously integrate reading and writing to address writing weaknesses and enhance writing proficiency. However, individual differences in EFL learners’ self-regulated R2W and writing strategy use remain largely unexplored. This study proposed a revised self-regulated writing (RSRW) framework by integrating SR-R2W into the existing self-regulated writing framework. Building on this framework, the study identified distinct SR-R2W and RSRW profiles and examined their associations with English reading, writing, and general performance, as well as motivational beliefs. Participants were...

Resumen:
Knowing how to create a positive motivational climate that motivates college students to engage in second language (L2) courses can be a big challenge for some L2 college professors. We created an intervention that used teaching strategies consistent with the MUSIC Model of Motivation to redesign lecture-based reading and listening classes within an L2 English course. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of the intervention on students’ perceptions of the motivational climate, motivation, and effort. Students were surveyed four times throughout the semester: before and after a reading class intervention, and before and after a listening class intervention. Participants included 31 first-year graduate students in a public university in eastern China. Paired t -test results showed that in the reading class, the...

Resumen:
The present longitudinal study investigated the changes of FLE (foreign language enjoyment) and FLA (foreign language anxiety) over time in the foreign language classroom and their relationship with foreign language learning motivation and learners’ personality traits. Fifty-five college students completed an FLE/FLA questionnaire after English classes over 14 weeks. They also completed a motivation questionnaire and a personality questionnaire. The results revealed that FLE was less stable over time as compared to FLA. A number of motivational factors (e.g. ought-to L2 self, ideal L2 self, motivated behavior) were found to be related to both the mean and the variance of FLE and FLA over time. Moreover, several personality traits (e.g. extraversion) also played a role in FLE and FLA. Pedagogical implications were discussed.

Resumen:
In recent years, competitive climate has increasingly prevailed in some Asian regions with large numbers of foreign language learners. It is thus important for teachers to understand the impact of this classroom environment on language learners’ emotions and to develop ways to effectively reduce any potential negative impact associated with the competitive climate. The present study aims to contribute to this under-studied but necessary line of research by focusing on the exploration of possible mechanisms underlying the relationship between competitive climate and foreign language anxiety. Specifically, we assessed the roles of control and extrinsic value appraisals as mediators in the relationship between competitive climate and anxiety levels. We also investigated the moderating role of cognitive reappraisal (a typical form of...

Resumen:
Access to generative artificial intelligence (AI) and the ability to use it are becoming crucial for learning, work, and leisure. In this context, AI literacy is recognized as critically important for adult language learners, including those from migrant and refugee backgrounds. While there have been calls to include AI literacy in language learning programs, its inclusion requires knowledge about learners’ current practices with generative AI and associated capabilities. This article reports selected findings from a large mixed-method study which explored uses of generative AI within one Australian government-funded adult education program. The study included a survey and focus groups,...
