Resumen:
While teachers bear the responsibility for facilitating discourse in second language (L2) classrooms, this study examines a specific pathway linking pedagogy to student participation. We investigated the relationship between a representative dialogic teaching strategy, academically productive talk (APT), and students’ discursive engagement in class. Using a sample of 490 students from seven primary and secondary schools, we analyzed associations among students’ perceptions of their teachers’ APT, students’ willingness to communicate (WTC), L2 learning motivation, L2 communication confidence, and their discursive engagement in L2 English classrooms. Structural equation modeling revealed that student-perceived teacher APT was positively related to both students’ WTC and their discursive engagement with peers. WTC partially mediated the...

Resumen:
Willingness to communicate (WTC) plays a key role in foreign language learning. However, little research has been devoted to the role of achievement goals and achievement emotions in understanding WTC. The present study aimed to examine the relationship between achievement goals (i.e. mastery goals, performance-approach, and performance-avoidance goals) and WTC via achievement emotions, specifically enjoyment and anxiety. Chinese secondary school students ( N = 408) participated in this study. Both variable- and person-centered approaches were used to analyse the data. Study 1 used a variable-centered approach to investigate the relationship between achievement goals and WTC. Results indicated that mastery and performance-approach goals were positively associated with WTC via higher levels of enjoyment. However, anxiety was not...

Resumen:
Digital literacy plays a crucial role in language learning. However, the relationship between digital literacy and engagement in English as a foreign language (EFL) learning remains unclear. Furthermore, the factors that moderate this link are not well understood. This study explored the connection between digital literacy and learning engagement among EFL learners, with particular attention to the moderating role of teacher support, as framed by social support theory. A total of 1,582 secondary school students from China participated in the research, providing self-reported data on digital literacy, learning engagement, teacher support, and demographic information. Multiple regression analysis revealed that after controlling for age, gender, and socioeconomic status, digital literacy positively predicted engagement in EFL learning....

Resumen:
Second language (L2) classroom is a dynamic and evolving space shaped by ongoing interactions between teachers and students. Understanding how these dynamic interactions unfold from a psychological perspective is critical for advancing L2 learning and teaching. This study contributes to this endeavour by examining the reciprocal relationship between teacher enthusiasm and L2 student classroom engagement as well as the mediating role of perceived learning value in this reciprocal relationship. Data were collected from 317 English as a foreign language learners in Vietnam at three time points across an academic semester and analysed by means of random-intercept cross-lagged panel modelling. Results revealed that teacher enthusiasm and L2 student engagement were reciprocally related over time, and this reciprocity was mediated by...

Resumen:
This article recounts my experience in enhancing my students’ boredom regulation by designing, implementing, and evaluating a strategy instruction project. The project was undertaken with 25 Thai university students enrolled in my English oral communication course for 15 weeks. The project began with exploring how and why my students experienced boredom in my classroom and their habitual boredom coping strategies while examining and modifying the initial design of my strategy instruction. Between weeks 8 and 12, I implemented five boredom regulation strategy sessions by using reappraisals and boredom coping as key components. Students engaged in guided practice, developed their own boredom regulation strategy toolkit, shared their ideas with peers, and reflected on their strategy use. Triangulating data from whole-class surveys, focus...

Resumen:
This study investigated the relationships between two vocabulary learning strategies (guessing from context and dictionary use) and two aspects of vocabulary knowledge (receptive and productive vocabulary knowledge). One hundred and thirty-five university students in Japan completed a vocabulary learning strategies survey, the Updated Vocabulary Levels Test, the Productive Vocabulary Levels Test, and Lex30. Results showed that the dictionary strategy significantly predicted receptive vocabulary knowledge, whereas no significant relationship between the guessing strategy and receptive vocabulary knowledge was observed. Neither guessing nor dictionary use significantly predicted productive vocabulary knowledge. Mediation analyses showed that dictionary use, but not guessing, had a significant indirect effect on productive lexicons via...

Resumen:
The rise of translation technologies has transformed language learning, offering English-related majors valuable tools for overcoming linguistic barriers and enhancing translation performance. However, the interplay of key factors influencing the actual use of these technologies among this demographic remains underexplored. This study investigates the relationships between second language (L2) motivation, performance expectancy, and L2 grit in shaping the use behavior of translation technologies, focusing on their direct and mediating effects. Using data from 554 juniors and seniors from six universities, the study reveals that L2 motivation significantly predicts performance expectancy, L2 grit, and use behavior. Performance expectancy directly influenced L2 grit, both of which subsequently affected the use behavior. They also...

Resumen:
Transferring collaborative writing (CW) activities from in-class paper-based to online cloud-mediated collaboration, this study examined the comparative effects of these two CW contexts on English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ macro- and micro-writing skills and motivation. For this purpose, a cohort ( N = 54) of senior EFL college students was selected (using criterion-based purposive sampling) and then randomly assigned to two groups: paper-based collaboration (PC, n = 27) and cloud-based collaboration (CC, n = 27). Using a mixed-method design, the study employed both quantitative (expository and argumentative writing tests, and a motivation questionnaire) and qualitative (group and self-evaluation forms and reflection sheets) methods for data collection and analysis. Consequently, one-way multivariate analysis of variance (...

Resumen:
The study investigated the beliefs expressed by a sample of 206 Polish and Spanish teacher-trainees about the use of learners’ native language (L1) in teaching English as a foreign language (EFL). Quantitative and qualitative data from a questionnaire revealed considerable differences between the two nationality groups in their beliefs about both medium-oriented and framework-oriented functions of the L1 in an L2 classroom. Moreover, significant differences were found in the participants’ accounts of their prior EFL learning experience in terms of the L1–L2 proportion in teachers’ classroom language use. A possible interpretation of these findings relates trainees’ beliefs to the L2 educational cultures prevalent in different countries, pointing to a contextually-mediated complexity of teacher-trainees’ belief systems. The study adds...

Resumen:
This study investigated the effects of growth mindset and self-efficacy on foreign language achievement (FLA) in a sample of 379 intermediate learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) while also incorporating the mediation of second language (L2) grit in a structural model. The measurement model was examined using confirmatory factor analysis, and mediation analysis was conducted following Baron and Kenny’s (1986) method to explore the mediating role of L2 grit in the relationship between growth mindset, self-efficacy, and FLA. The results revealed that both L2 grit and English self-efficacy directly predicted FLA. Moreover, the mediation analysis revealed that growth mindset influenced FLA indirectly through the mediating role of L2 grit. These findings suggest that fostering growth mindset and self-efficacy beliefs in language...
