Resumen:

Artículo en inglés
Artículo en español

Cognitive science is an interdisciplinary field of researchers from psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, philosophy, computer science, and anthropology who seek to understand the mind. In this regular American Educator column, we consider findings from this field that are strong and clear enough to merit classroom application.

Investigating the potential of changing the smartphone system language to L2 for facilitating vocabulary learning and motivation
Shelly Xueting Ye, Jia Shi (2023)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario

Resumen:

Few mobile-assisted vocabulary learning approaches fully correspond to the authenticity principle of the situated learning theory (SLT). A novel practice of changing the smartphone system language to second language (L2), which intends to better implement SLT in a real smartphone context, is the focus of this study. To explore the potential of using this under-researched approach to facilitate L2 vocabulary learning, a mixed-method design was adopted to investigate its impact on vocabulary acquisition, global language learning motivation, and vocabulary learning motivation. Participants' pre- and post-test scores on the vocabulary knowledge test and motivation questionnaires were compared between the experimental and control groups. Interviews were also conducted to understand learners' perceptions of this novel approach. Both...

Toward inclusive and relevant second language education for Black students
Germán Zárate-Sández (2021)
Second Language Research & Practice
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: experiencia práctica

Temas: inclusión y equidad

Resumen:

Texto completo

In this report, I describe the research and curricular changes I am implementing to deal with issues of inequity encountered by Black students in the Spanish program I direct at Western Michigan University. In the first stage, a comprehensive analysis of student demographics, enrollment, and academic performance over six years revealed that Black and African American students begin Spanish education at high rates but are less likely to advance to courses beyond second-year Spanish and more likely to obtain lower final grades than other groups. These findings are consistent with literature showing similar patterns of participation and achievement...

Training teachers to use corpus tools in the Spanish language classroom
Yuly Asención-Delaney, Joseph G. Collentine, Jersus J. Colmenares (2022)
Journal of Spanish Language Teaching
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: propuesta didáctica

Temas: corpus

Resumen:

Language corpora can play a significant role in second language education, particularly given the benefits of data-driven learning. However, most teachers are not able to effectively utilize technologies that search, summarize, and contextualize corpus samples and lack training in the design and implementation of corpus-based learning tasks and materials. Even though attempts to implement formal teacher training in these areas have started to emerge, they tend to concentrate on English language contexts. Similar experiences in Spanish teacher education are almost non-existent, even though digital literacy is a key competency in the preparation of foreign language teachers. Consequently, Spanish language teachers can only rely on general suggestions on how to integrate corpus methods and resources into their practice. This article...

Spanish corpora and their pedagogical uses: challenges and opportunities
Claudia Helena Sanchez-Gutierrez, Barbara De Cock, Nicole Tracy-Ventura (2022)
Journal of Spanish Language Teaching
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Temas: corpus

Resumen:

While first-language (L1) corpora have been a key tool for linguistic research in Spanish, their use for pedagogical purposes is still limited, and more corpora are needed that document the varieties of Spanish used by learners or heritage speakers of the language. In this article, we provide an overview of the research that has already been carried out with available Spanish corpora and we propose avenues for further development of the areas where there is room for growth. As an introduction to this special issue, we also summarize the highlights of each of the six articles in this volume. Finally, we conclude with a call for collaboration among Spanish corpus researchers to address the current limitations when it comes to creating corpora that include oral and longitudinal data, that are more accessible, and more useful for daily...

Disruptive Technologies and the LanguageClassroom. A Complex Systems Theory Approach
Regine Hampel (2019)
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: libro

Metodología: trabajo teórico

Temas: tecnología educativa

Resumen:

Although new technologies are embedded in students' lives today, there is often an assumption that their use is transparent, inconsequential, or a distraction. This book combines complex systems theory with sociocultural theory and the multimodal theory of communication, providing an innovative theoretical framework to examine how communication and meaning-making in the language classroom have developed over time, how technology impacts on meaning-making, and what the implications are for learners, teachers, institutions and policy makers. Recent studies provide evidence for the disruptive effect of technology which has resulted in a phase shift that is reshaping language education by creating new interaction patterns, allowing for multimodal communication, and introducing real-world communication into the classroom. The book proposes...

Development of grammar, vocabulary, and pragmatics in an additional language: insights from Spanish learner corpus research
Aarnes Gudmestad (2022)
Journal of Spanish Language Teaching
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Temas: corpus

Resumen:

The current article offers an overview of scholarship on additional-language (e.g., second-language, heritage-language) users of Spanish that has been carried out using learner corpora in the last decade. I focus the review of Spanish learner corpus research on investigations that have examined grammar (e.g., fluency, grammatical gender), vocabulary (e.g., lexical diversity), and pragmatics (e.g., discourse markers), and I highlight the contributions that this body of work has made to the understanding of the use and development of additional-language Spanish. I also discuss the pedagogical applications that this line of inquiry may have. I conclude by identifying specific avenues for future work pertaining to research on additional-language learning and the development of new corpora.

Teaching and Learning Third Languages
Francesca D'Angelo (2023)
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: libro

Temas: español como L3

Resumen:

This book contributes to emerging research on third language acquisition (TLA) and pinpoints the main factors characterising TLA as a different process and area of study from second language acquisition. Moving beyond the dichotomous conception of monolingualism and bilingualism, it proposes a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to studying acquisition of a third or additional language. It presents readers with a practical guide to understanding how these languages are processed, learned and taught and addresses the cognitive, linguistic and affective factors which make multilingual learning and teaching a complex and unique phenomenon. It also emphasises the important role of teachers as knowledge generators. Through various examples of multilingual education practices, it highlights how fundamental teachers are as bridges...

Designing, compiling and interrogating corpora in L2 Spanish acquisition research
Cristóbal Lozano, Paloma Fernández-Mira (2022)
Journal of Spanish Language Teaching
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: trabajo teórico

Temas: corpus

Resumen:

Despite the burgeoning field of Spanish second language acquisition (SLA) research, large Spanish learner corpora (LC) are not common practice yet. We present a general yet practical introduction to the multiple decisions Spanish as a second language (L2) researchers should consider before creating their own LC. We focus on (i) two freely available Spanish LC (CEDEL2 and COWS-L2H), (ii) their general design principles, (iii) crucial variables to collect (learner and task variables), (iv) ways of collecting and compiling LC data, and (v) the final product (the corpus interface). We explore different ways of interrogating the two corpora, illustrating them with specific (morpho)syntactic and lexical examples from L2 Spanish, as well as potential curricular and teaching applications of LC. We conclude with a recommendation for the...
