Performance-based differences in the associations among ideal self, enjoyment, and anxiety: A longitudinal study on L2 integrated writing
Yi Guan, Siyu Zhu, Xinhua Zhu (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación

Resumen:

Recently, second language (L2) researchers gradually shift their focus on learners’ motivational and emotional responses to specific language skills, such as L2 writing. However, there is a paucity of empirical research on the relationships between learners’ L2 writing performance, motivation, and emotions from a longitudinal perspective. With a sample of 235 English-major students from a Chinese university, the present study explored the changes in the ideal L2 writing self and its relationships with L2 writing enjoyment and L2 writing anxiety among students with different integrated writing (IW) performance over an academic year. The ANOVA results reported that the ideal L2 writing self remained stable over time and showed no significant difference among three groups of students (high-level, middle-level, and low-level). The multi-...

Maze tasks for L2 morphosyntactic skill acquisition
Jonathan Serfaty (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: adquisición de segundas lenguas

Resumen:

The maze task is an online activity in which participants continually select between two words to form grammatical sentences. This study investigated whether the maze task facilitates production and perception accuracy in English for Cambodian secondary-school learners. Participants ( N = 101) practiced target sentences in the maze task with either morphological or syntactic choices, whereas a control group practiced unrelated sentences. Learning within the task was assessed via error rates, response times, and the coefficient of variation across 10 rounds. Transfer was evaluated with time-pressured oral translation and grammaticality judgment tests (GJTs). Results showed evidence of proceduralization and automatization for the maze task itself, and all participants improved in both the oral tests and in perceiving morphological...

Strategically Informed Machine Translation Post-Editing: Enhancing Translation Performance among Intermediate Chinese EFL Learners
Zhiying Li (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: traducción automática

Resumen:

Machine translation (MT) errors may be seen as a limitation, but it is precisely these imperfections that provide learners with valuable opportunities for error-driven practice through post-editing (PE), thus developing their language proficiency and, in turn, supporting translation performance. However, little is known about how machine translation post-editing (MTPE) benefits intermediate learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). This empirical study explores the role of strategically informed MTPE practices in supporting intermediate Chinese EFL learners’ linguistic and translation development. Participants completed human translation and MTPE tasks guided by PE strategies, followed by reflection on their edits. Text complexity analysis using Eng-Editor revealed that post-edited texts exhibited higher overall textual,...

‘Definitions did not effectively help my students’: Pre-service teachers’ language modification strategies in Thai language-driven CLIL classrooms
Nutthida Tachaiyaphum, Laura Gurney, Nicola Daly (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: AICLE/CLIL

Resumen:

Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) requires a synthesis of language and content teaching. However, language teachers who are employed to teach CLIL may lack the preparation and knowledge to teach other curriculum subjects. It is therefore necessary to understand how language CLIL teachers make subject-specific language comprehensible to students when they themselves are unfamiliar with subject-specific terms and concepts. However, no research has yet been conducted to explore this in the Thai context. To address this gap, this article presents the findings of a qualitative study exploring pre-service teachers’ use of language modification as negotiation of meaning (NoM) strategies to make accessible subject-specific terms or concepts in the target language to students. Data are drawn from language-driven CLIL classroom...

Questioning strategies in EFL teaching: their role in fostering learners’ critical thinking
Jumana Awawda (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

This action research study explored the influence of questioning strategies on fostering critical thinking in English as a foreign language (EFL) classrooms among Arabic-speaking elementary students in the Arab sector in Israel. Unlike previous studies that either describe questioning patterns or provide experimental interventions, the study described here uniquely integrates action research with conversation analysis (CA), offering both a reflective teaching framework and a rigorous discourse-analytic lens. Using an action research approach combined with CA, the research examined teacher–student interactions in two sixth-grade EFL classes over a 4-month period. Data were collected from recorded classroom lessons and analyzed to identify how different types of questions shape students’ responses and promote critical thinking. The...

Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

In the contemporary educational landscape, the interplay between customary and online classrooms has created a dynamic space for teacher–student interaction. This study examined spoken discourse by comparing the use of proximity and interaction strategies in customary and online English-as-a-foreign-language classrooms. Drawing on Hyland’s proximity model—comprising organization, argument structure, credibility, stance, and engagement—the study explored how these dimensions were realized in instructional interaction. Data were drawn from 30 recorded classes at Payame Noor University, including 15 customary classes and 15 online classes. Following transcription, the frequency of proximity and interaction features in each instructional mode was quantified. The findings suggested differences between the two modalities. Instructors in...

Configurational Effects of Grit, Mindset, and Engagement on Language Achievement: Insights from fsQCA Approach
Xuan Zhou, Mingce Huang, Patricia Nora Riget (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: diferencias individuales

Resumen:

Second language acquisition is a lengthy and complex process fraught with numerous obstacles and barriers. It requires learners to possess robust grit, adaptive mindsets, and active engagement to overcome the challenges encountered during the learning process. However, limited antecedent research has integrated the three factors into one framework and examined the configured joint effects on language achievement outcomes. Adopting a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA), 431 tertiary-level university students were recruited to complete grit, engagement, and mindset questionnaires, and their language achievement was assessed through the grades they attained on the College English Test Band 4. The results from the direct path analysis and fsQCA analysis led to two major findings. First, perseverance of effort and behavioral...

Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: comprensión oral

Resumen:

Listening is regarded as an essential skill for language learning, and metacognitive intervention has been utilized widely to facilitate this skill for learners in recent years. Besides metacognitive factors, the impact of personality traits such as introversion/extroversion has been emphasized in the field of language teaching. This study investigated the effect of the metacognitive intervention on upper-intermediate introvert English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ listening comprehension and metacognitive awareness. Upper-intermediate introvert EFL learners ( N = 59) were randomly assigned to an experimental ( N = 29) and a control group ( N = 30). The experimental group received metacognitive intervention through a pedagogical cycle for eight sessions, while the control group followed their conventional approach without a...

The effects of two methods of on-line planning on L2 task-based speaking performance and strategy use
Qianqian Gu, Kris Van den Branden (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enfoque por tareas

Resumen:

Studies on on-line planning have been based upon the same definition in the past few decades, and they have operationalized on-line planning in similar ways. Drawing upon theories in cognitive psychology, the present study sets out to propose a revised definition of on-line planning that aims at capturing a greater variety of on-line planning behaviors. Two methods of eliciting on-line planning were implemented: providing students with listener’s feedback between two consecutive rounds of task performance, and providing them with criteria for successful task performance. Their effects on second language (L2) narrative task performance and the use of planning strategies were investigated with 90 Chinese learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) who were first-year English majors. To assess the quality of task performance,...
