Reading Between the Lines: Digital Annotation Insights from Heritage and L2 Learners
Edna Velásquez (2025)
Languages
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: español como lengua de herencia

Resumen:

Texto completo

This study investigates how Spanish heritage language (SHL) learners, and second language (L2) learners cognitively and socially engage with texts through collaborative digital annotations. Conducted in two advanced online writing courses with forty students, the study employed Perusall, a social annotation platform, to examine reading behaviors and peer interactions. Quantitative analysis revealed both similarities and differences in strategy use: while both groups demonstrated equal levels of interaction, SHL learners favored Evaluating and Connecting strategies, suggesting reflective, experience-based engagement, whereas L2 learners more frequently used Questioning and Translating strategies, indicating a more...

Processes of linguistic accommodation within the Puerto Rican diaspora in New Jersey
Yhosep Barba Blanco (2024)
Revista Nebrija de Lingüística Aplicada a la Enseñanza de Lenguas
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: sociolingüística

Resumen:

Texto completo

This article explores the sociocultural and linguistic experiences of eight Puerto Ricans who have migrated to the state of New Jersey. While previous research has shown how the Puerto Rican diaspora has linguistically accommodated across the United States, this study investigates the role of linguistic attitudes and accommodation processes in the maintenance, reinforcement, or erasure of sociophonological and lexical features in Puerto Ricans who have migrated to New Jersey. Through a Grounded Theory approach, this study discloses how these individuals navigate linguistic norms, maintain cultural identity, and challenge racial and linguistic discrimination. Findings show a range of...

Noun canonicity in heritage speakers and monolingual speakers of Spanish
Dámaris Mayans (2023)
ELUA: Estudios de Lingüística. Universidad de Alicante
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: español como lengua de herencia

Resumen:

Texto completo

The present investigation examines the role of Spanish noun gender-correlated endings when accessing gender agreement in two different linguistic populations: Spanish-English bilingual heritage speakers and monolingual speakers of Spanish. This study analyzed data from 34 monolingual speakers of Spanish from the Dominican Republic and 44 heritage speakers of Spanish born in the United States who completed a picture naming task in Experiment 1 (determiner-noun agreement) and a picture description task in Experiment 2 (noun-adjective agreement). Results found that canonicity, particularly overt gender marking cues, seemed to have a facilitatory effect for monolingual speakers as seen by significantly faster...

Outcomes of University Spanish Heritage Language Instruction in the United States
VV. AA., Melissa A. Bowles (2022)
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: libro

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: español como lengua de herencia

Resumen:

n the United States, heritage language speakers represent approximately 22 percent of the population and 29 percent of the school-age population. Until now, though, few studies have examined the outcomes of classroom teaching of heritage languages.

Outcomes of University Spanish Heritage Language Instruction in the United States sheds light on the effectiveness of specific instructional methods for college-level heritage learners. The first of its kind, this volume addresses how receiving heritage classroom instruction affects Spanish speakers on multiple levels, including linguistic, affective, attitudinal, social, and academic outcomes. Examining outcomes of instruction in the Spanish language—the most common heritage language in the United States—provides insights that can be applied to instruction in other heritage...

Reconstituting U.S. Spanish language education: U.S. Latinx occupying classrooms
Ofelia García, Lara Alonso (2021)
Journal of Spanish Language Teaching
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: trabajo teórico

Temas: bilingüismo

Resumen:

This paper aims to redefine Spanish language education in the U.S. by showing how the increased presence of Latinx Spanish-speakers in classrooms brings into question the traditional way in which Spanish language teaching is divided into three, separate fields: as a foreign language, in bilingual education, and as a heritage language. It proposes that Spanish language education focuses on the ways in which the numerous U.S. Latinx perform language, and the reasons for their ways of languaging. The article explores the linked histories of Spanish language education in the U.S and racialization of the U.S. Latinx community. A review of how Spanish language education has constituted itself as three separate fields is then presented, as the cracks in the divisions today are analyzed. The article then proposes a reconstitution of Spanish...

Racializing Latinx bilinguals in K-12 language learning classrooms in the United States
Aris Moreno Clemons, Almeida Jacqueline Toribio (2021)
Journal of Spanish Language Teaching

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: diseño curricular

Resumen:

The present study applies critical race theory and a raciolinguistic perspective to understand the orientations of language programs in the United States towards developing bilingualism. More specifically, the study draws on survey and in-depth interview data from self-identified Latinx Spanish-English bilinguals who participated in English-dominant and bilingual curricula. We establish that the practices and policies of extant programs are grounded in injurious ideologies that result in the racialization of Latinx students. In particular, the results point to multiple factors—student assessment and placements, teachers' linguistic and social profiles, and instructors' corrective feedback—all of which racialize heritage Spanish speakers by essentializing and homogenizing them and by linking them to notions of "other", often with...

Improving Spanish classroom assessment via logistic regression: lessons from the Rasch model
Glen H. Wallace (2020)
Journal of Spanish Language Teaching
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: evaluación

Resumen:

Each year in the United States, hundreds of thousands of undergraduate students enroll in introductory Spanish courses. For many students, passing these classes is a prerequisite for graduation. Consequently, it is imperative that the exams used in these courses are of the highest possible quality. For decades, the Rasch model (a special case of logistic regression) has been used to evaluate high-stakes language assessment, but has rarely been applied to exams used in classrooms. The current study employs the Rasch model to evaluate a midterm exam administered in the fourth week of an introductory Spanish class (n = 399 across 17 sections). This model identifies which questions best evaluate students at different proficiency levels and shows that the test reliably assigns scores near the pass-fail cutoff. The results of this study...

Intercultural communicative competence and Spanish heritage language speakers: an overview from the U.S., Australia and Europe
Adriana Raquel Díaz, Laura Callahan (2020)
Journal of Spanish Language Teaching
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Temas: competencia intercultural

Resumen:

Research on "heritage/community language education" (HCLE) has a relatively recent trajectory, but it has generated a large number of scholarly publications, particularly in relation to Spanish in the United States (U.S.) where the growth of Spanish heritage language learners (HLL) has been exponential. However, to date, limited research attention has been given to the intersection between heritage language learning and the development of intercultural communicative competence (ICC). This may be attributed to the assumption that, on a daily basis, such learners are required to move and effectively operate between languages and cultures and, therefore, already possess adequate levels of ICC. With the development of ICC, now considered an integral component in language education, the time appears ripe to examine its implications within...
