Although researchers have found strong relationships between first language (L1) skills and second language (L2) anxiety, less is known about how L1 skills in primary school impact L2 anxiety years after L1 has been acquired. Previous research lacked evidence for the mediating role of L2 aptitude and L2 achievement in the relationship. This study applies structural equation modelling to examine pathways by which L1 skills are associated with L2 anxiety via the mediators. Sixty-five students were administered L1 skill measures from 1st–5th grades, then followed over 10 years when completing L2 courses in high school. We examined the model across six different ages and found the effect of L1 skills on L2 anxiety was indirect through L2 aptitude and L2 achievement, indicating the impact is better understood through the mediators. The...

Temas: adquisición de segundas lenguas
Resumen:
Following the back-to-front approach of the Routledge Introductions to Applied Linguistics series, the book takes problematic issues in language pedagogy as its starting points. These are then examined in terms of second language acquisition. Each chapter begins with a look at the pedagogical proposals found in teacher guides and then asks 'Do these proposals accord with what we know about how languages are acquired…' Pedagogical topics covered include teaching methods, syllabus design, explicit instruction, comprehension versus production-based instruction, task-based instruction, authentic materials, the role of the learners' first language in the classroom, error correction and catering for individual differences.
Including a glossary of key terms and questions for discussion at the end of each chapter, and assuming no prior...

Resumen:
Boredom, though a significant emotion in second language acquisition, has received less attention compared with anxiety and enjoyment. Existing research on the effects of boredom presents mixed findings. To date, no study has systematically synthesized evidence regarding its impact on language achievement and its potential moderating factors. This study addresses this gap by conducting a meta-analysis to examine the influence of boredom on language achievement. A comprehensive analysis of 23 studies involving 9,154 participants was performed. The results from the random effects model revealed a small to medium negative effect size (r = −0.34), indicating that boredom has a detrimental impact on language achievement. Furthermore, moderator analyses identified significant variations in effect sizes across different research contexts,...

Resumen:
This study investigated the extent to which second language (L2) learners benefited from proactive form-focused instruction (FFI) targeting French grammatical gender attribution and the degree to which L2 learners' attention control and working memory predicted their learning gains. A total of 102 L2 learners received either proactive FFI targeting French grammatical gender attribution or their regular instruction (i.e. control condition) for six 80-minute instructional sessions. A pretest, an immediate posttest, and a delayed posttest were administered, each entailing binary-choice, text-completion, picture-description, and listening tasks. The L2 learners also completed the Simon Test and the Corsi Block-Tapping Test, which measured their attention control and working memory. Results showed that L2 learners receiving the proactive...

Resumen:
This book is the first volume devoted to mindset theory and practice in language education, offering interdisciplinary investigations into the motivation, competencies, emotions and wellbeing of language learners and teachers. Presenting studies from a vast array of language learning environments, the chapters explore topics such as students' attitudes and motivation surrounding language learning, the effects of mindset on vocabulary acquisition, the mindsets of early career teachers and experienced language teachers, interventions on students' mindsets and interventions that strengthen language teachers' growth mindsets.
The findings presented in this book will be of great interest to instructors and researchers alike and present essential developments for the field of applied linguistics and psychology of language learning and...

Resumen:
Emotional intelligence (EI) has been a focus of interest in foreign language education over the last few decades. Foreign language anxiety (FLA) is a central issue in foreign language learning, as it is the most common negative emotion that language learners experience and may hinder the language learning process. The present study scrutinizes the relationship between EI and FLA by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis of existing literature. A systematic search of related databases generated 40 eligible studies published between 2003 and 2024 (n = 11,590 samples), of which 14 (n = 4,789 samples) were subject to a meta-analysis to assess the overall effect size of EI on FLA. The majority of studies in the review found a significant negative correlation between EI and FLA, with research conducted across 12 countries using...

Resumen:
This study investigates whether linguistic outcomes of second language (L2) learners' performance are consistent across oral and written modalities and, if so, whether the consistency remains across proficiency levels. The study also explores whether the linguistic outcomes of speaking, writing, or both are related to working memory capacity. Eighty-six L2 learners, from beginner to advanced, described a series of pictures within time constraints in speech and in writing, and completed two working memory tests. The study found greater syntactic complexity and lexical sophistication in the written than in the oral modality. However, the oral task elicited more lexical diversity, and the advanced learners produced more subordinate clauses in the oral task than in the written task. Learners with more working memory capacity produced...

Resumen:
This study aimed to investigate to what extent working memory capacity (WMC) and emotional intelligence (EI) contribute to second language (L2) writing as assessed through measures of syntactic and lexical complexity and linguistic accuracy. Seventy-seven adult learners of Spanish took part in the study and performed two writing tasks, one about an emotional topic and the other one about a non-emotional topic. They also completed a self-reported measure of EI, the Trait Meta-Mood Scale, and three memory tasks, the Math Span Test, the Corsi Block-Tapping Task, and the Stroop Task. The results showed a negative correlation between emotional repair and visuospatial short-term memory...
