Resumen:
As an important instructional affordance, teacher written feedback is widely used in second language (L2) writing contexts. While copious evidence has shown that such a pedagogical practice can facilitate L2 learners’ writing performance, especially their writing accuracy, little is known about how novice writing teachers conceptualize and enact written feedback in contexts of English as a foreign language (EFL). To fill this gap, we examined four novice writing teachers’ espoused written feedback beliefs and their actual practices in Chinese tertiary EFL writing classrooms. Based on data from semi-structured interviews and students’ writing samples, we found that they adopted a comprehensive approach to feedback provision, and were most concerned with errors in language, particularly grammar when providing feedback. These teachers...

Resumen:
Evidence has mounted for the effectiveness of second language pronunciation instruction. Given the critical role instructors play in implementing effective instruction, one line of inquiry has been to better understand instructors’ beliefs and practices as they relate to second language pronunciation teaching and learning. A critical gap, however, is that such research has focused primarily on English, with only limited focus on languages other than English. Amongst languages other than English, there remains next to no emphasis on less commonly taught languages. Such languages should be of interest given a well-documented dearth of quality instructional materials. This study investigated less...

Resumen:
Although writing plays a significant role in communication, 21st century literacies and academic foreign language learning, little research has investigated approaches to and instructional practices of writing in foreign language (FL) contexts. To address this gap, the current study explores how postsecondary FL teachers conceptualize writing instruction and apply their conceptual knowledge in the classroom. Using a sociocultural theory perspective, this qualitative study focuses on genre-based writing instruction and the teaching of textual borrowing among three graduate teaching assistants in a lower-level French as a FL course. Findings, based on analysis of classroom observations, teaching materials, and interviews, demonstrate that participants’ conceptualizations and implementation of textual borrowing were emergent, variable,...

Foreign language teaching enjoyment (FLTE), a recently conceptualized notion of language teachers' positive emotion, has received a burgeoning interest in positive psychology studies and in the field of second language teaching research. However, due to the pure novelty of the concept of FLTE and the excessive reliance on quantitative research methods in capturing its correlates, the way FLTE can be influenced by contextual work-related factors remains far from being comprehensively understood. There are a multitude of challenges jeopardizing positive emotions in the workplace for teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL). Accordingly, being enlightened by an activity theory perspective, our qualitative study, aimed to unravel the factors that boost/diminish FLTE among 10 EFL teachers. The data were collected through narrative...

Despite the widespread reference to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and the Companion Volume (CV) in the language teaching curriculum in Spain, there is no information regarding teachers' familiarity with the documents and their degree of implementation in University Language Centres, crucial for the internationalization of universities. To bridge this gap in the literature, a questionnaire was designed, validated and administered to sixty-four teachers from 14 different Centres throughout Spain. Findings reveal gaps in the teachers' knowledge regarding differences between the documents, specific issues related to the CV, and varying degrees of familiarity and use of competences and their descriptors. A further analysis of open questions also revealed those aspects which are missing in teacher training...

Resumen:
Even though the field of heritage language education has flourished in recent years and has placed emphasis on the development of biliteracies in Spanish heritage language (SHL) learners (e.g., Belpoliti & Bermejo, 2020; Samaniego & Warner, 2016), little is known about how SHL writing instruction is conducted in terms of educators' practices and perceptions. Through an online survey distributed across the United States, SHL educators reported the main challenges they face (e.g., working with accuracy, writing conventions), strategies they use (e.g., modelling), and the technology they use to teach writing. The survey also provides an overview of the importance given to various elements of a composition (e.g., task type, range of vocabulary) when teaching SHL courses. Overall, SHL educators' perceptions provide a knowledge base...

Resumen:
Learner engagement has been the focus of a growing amount of research in recent years both in general educational psychology and the field of second language acquisition (SLA). However, while recent contributions on learner engagement in language classrooms have provided valuable insights, the field is still only at the early stages of understanding the complexity of the concept and creating a strong empirical evidence base. This study is intended to contribute to our current understanding by investigating both learners' and teachers' perceptions on what might prevent motivated second language (L2) learners from engaging with language learning in and out of classrooms. A total of 39 learners and teachers were interviewed in two countries, England and Finland, and the results indicate a variety of potential reasons for motivated...
