Cognitive Linguistics provides a theoretical framework to understand language as a builder of meaning that stems from interaction with the world and draws from the sensorimotor experience of all speakers. This point of view affords remarkable potential for foreign language teaching: it shows that as physical experiences are universal, so are the conceptualizations of the L1/L2 speakers who have them.

Both educators and researchers alike are usually confounded by the differential performances of L2 learners who are exposed to the same L2 information in the classroom setting. Current second language acquisition (SLA) research employing concurrent data elicitation procedures (e.g., think-aloud protocols to gather online data on learners? cognitive processes employed during their interaction with the L2 data) are revealing that one potential explanation may lie in how deeply L2 learners process the L2 information, usually referred to as depth of processing. El presente trabajo pretende concienciar a los profesores de segundas lenguas de la importancia del adecuado manejo de los libros de texto, para favorecer una enseñanza eficaz del vocabulario. Para ello, proponemos un análisis de manuales a partir de dos propiedades esenciales del aprendizaje léxico: la profundidad del procesamiento y la práctica distribuida, también denominada reciclaje. Ambos aspectos se han examinado en el tratamiento de diez adverbios transitivos de relación locativa en catorce manuales de español como lengua extranjera (ELE) de niveles iniciales. A través de estos datos, podremos valorar si los libros de texto favorecen la integración de estos adverbios en la memoria a largo plazo y proponer algunas sugerencias para su introducción en el aula.

The imagination effect occurs when students learn better from imagining concepts and procedures rather than from studying them. Cognitive load theory explains the effect by better use of available working memory resources and increased productive, intrinsic cognitive load. The effect has been found in numerous empirical studies. However, in the majority of studies demonstrating the effect, visual/spatial information has been used: the type of information that is believed to be easy for imagining. This study compares metalinguistic awareness of students in a one-way partial Spanish immersion (IMM) program to that of their English-only (ENG) counterparts at the same school. Students in grades 3 and 5 from each program completed a sentence grammaticality judgment task in English delivered orally. Measures of IMM students? Spanish proficiency were included to examine the relationship between L2 Spanish ability and metalinguistic awareness. Grade 5 IMM students outperformed ENG students on the grammatically anomalous sentences, but no difference was found at grade 3. For the semantically anomalous sentences, IMM students outperformed their ENG counterparts at grade 3, but the reverse was true for grade 5.
