Global Spanish(es) in a global city: linguistic diversity among learners of Spanish in London
Darren Paffey (2019)
Journal of Spanish Language Teaching
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: español en el mundo

Resumen:

This article considers the role of Spanish as a global language by examining its use in London, a global, multilingual and superdiverse city, where Spanish has no official status. I consider how pluricentric norms, panhispanism, and the emerging Nueva Política Lingüística Panhispánica (NPLP) find expression. In particular, I ask how regional and national varieties of Spanish are perceived by L1 and L2 learners and how these attitudes construct local language ideologies held by different actors. I profile two institutions where language ideologies and linguistic practice can be examined. These are: (1) an international Spanish—English bilingual school run as part of Spain—s diplomatic mission; and (2) a language school backed by the Spanish government. I argue that the NPLP is not just about the traditional "pillars" of Spanish...

Linguistic diversity and student voice: the case of Spanish as a heritage language
Damián Vergara Wilson, Diego Pascual y Cabo (2019)
Journal of Spanish Language Teaching
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: español como lengua de herencia

Resumen:

This article examines the issue of teaching Spanish as a heritage language (SHL) focusing primarily on the issues of linguistic diversity and the socio-affective issues related to heritage language learners. First, we consider linguistic diversity in speech communities where students use SHL. Second, we discuss students' perceptions of the teaching of Spanish in a linguistically diverse setting and draw upon a corpus of interviews with 35 students attending an SHL program at a large southwestern university in the United States. We examine stated perspectives regarding the (mis)match between students' heritage varieties and what is promoted in the classroom. The data reveals the importance of considering the student perspective in validating heritage language varieties and indicate both challenges and insights in achieving this...

Cultural meaning-making in challenging interactions in L2 Spanish: language teachers' perceptions
Lori Czerwionka, Gerrard Mugford (2020)
Journal of Spanish Language Teaching
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: competencia intercultural

Resumen:

Some challenges to intercultural communication prevent intercultural interactions altogether, while others can prevent effective and successful communication during an intercultural exchange. This article addresses a key challenge within intercultural interactions: cultural meaning-making. This is a process that requires both communicative and intercultural competence and encompasses the interdependent and ever-present relationships between language, culture, and worldviews. Considering the important role of language teachers in second language (L2) learners' cultural meaning-making development in challenging interactions that may be faced by learners in the target language community, the current pilot study elicits teachers' perceptions of linguistic and cultural resources required by their students to engage in challenging...

Dialectal variation and Spanish Language Teaching (SLT): perspectives from the United Kingdom
Zsuzsanna Bárkányi, Mara Fuertes Gutiérrez (2019)
Journal of Spanish Language Teaching
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: creencias y actitudes de los profesores

Resumen:

This article presents the results of an empirical investigation into the teaching practices and opinions of UK-based Spanish teachers concerning the treatment of language varieties in the L2/FL classroom. Qualitative and quantitative data obtained through an online survey provide the basis for an analysis of participants' knowledge of dialectal varieties and how to teach them, their perceptions of their own and other varieties, and the extent to which they accept new Pan-Hispanic ideologies and the conception of Spanish as a pluricentric language. The study reveals a lack of correlation between teachers' declared knowledge about Spanish dialectal varieties and their own teaching practices.

Missing Words: The Vocabulary of BBC Spanish Courses for Adults
Paul Meara, Jesús Suárez García, María Moreno Jaén (2010)
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: capítulo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: vocabulario

Resumen:

Until very recently, vocabulary played a role in the production of language teaching materials that was very definitely a secondary one. Although inevitably present in any course book, vocabulary was generally subordinated to other elements that were considered more important to the process of learning a language. Thus, in the 1950s and 1960s, when grammar translation was the dominant approach to language teaching, the lexical content of courses was considered less important than the grammatical content of textbooks. To a large extent, the vocabulary taught was determined by the words that appeared in the works of classical authors whose texts were used for teaching purposes. Later, the structural or audiolingual methods, based on behaviourist theories subordinated the vocabulary to be taught to the linguistic structures that the...

Apropiación y uso del alfabeto español
Daniel Cassany (2014)
Journal of Spanish Language Teaching
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: alfabetización

Resumen:

Texto completo

Developing automaticity and speed of lexical access: the effects of incidental and explicit teaching approaches
Ana Pellicer-Sánchez (2015)
Journal of Spanish Language Teaching
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario

Resumen:

There is general agreement that speed of lexical access is an essential component for successful communication and fluent language use. In vocabulary acquisition research the majority of studies have focused on the acquisition of the form and meaning of new words but research into the teaching conditions leading to the improvement of speed of lexical access is still scarce. This article reports results of two studies which explored the effectiveness of two vocabulary teaching approaches for the development of speed and automaticity of lexical access by learners of Spanish as a foreign language. Participants in Study 1 were exposed to the target vocabulary in reading passages (incidental approach), while participants in Study 2 were exposed to the target words in explicit vocabulary activities (explicit approach). A pre- and post-...

General extender use in spoken Peninsular Spanish: metapragmatic awareness and pedagogical implications
Julieta Fernández (2015)
Journal of Spanish Language Teaching
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: pragmática

Resumen:

Texto completo

This article examines vague lexical features in unplanned, naturally occurring spoken discourse among speakers of Peninsular Spanish. It focuses on vague multi-word expressions that are part of a larger category of General Extenders (GEs, Overstreet Citation1999). Drawing on a subset of data from the Corpus Oral de Referencia del Español Contemporáneo (COREC), the article describes GEs in terms of form and frequency, and illustrates the use of the three most frequent GEs vis-à-vis discursive and pragmatic functions in spoken discourse. Based on GEs' many and pivotal interactional functions as well as their frequency in attested interactions, this article proposes that language learners...
