Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación

Resumen:

This quasi-experimental study examines the impact of the production-oriented approach (POA) on the L2 Motivational Self System (L2MSS) of Chinese college students and their English achievement. Conducted over 8 weeks in four classes ( N = 108) at a public university in Shandong Province, the study compares two experimental groups exposed to POA-based instruction with two control groups following traditional teaching methods. Data were collected via a validated 40-item L2MSS questionnaire and three English achievement tests administered in Weeks 1, 4, and 8. Statistical analyses, including independent t -tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), and multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA), revealed that POA significantly enhanced students’ overall second-language (L2) motivation and English achievement, with the most consistent...

Resumen:

This study examined the effects of watching gestures and lip movement on second language (English) listening comprehension. The participants were 30 high and 22 low proficient learners of English. There were six listening tasks combining two variables: modality and difficulty. The modality consisted of three types of assessments: Body (the upper half of body was visible), Face (close up view), and Audio. The difficulty consisted of two levels: Easy and Hard. Learners watched Body, Face, or listened to Audio, and worked on six comprehension questions twice for each task. Moreover, the participants were asked about their modality of preference. The notable results were (1) the modality of listening had no influence on their listening performance, (2) for the high proficiency group, the score difference between the easy and the hard...

Improvement of students’ self-directed learning readiness through problem-based English language learning in Korea

Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: aprendizaje autónomo

Resumen:

The current study investigated how problem-based English language learning influenced Korean secondary students’ self-directed learning readiness (SDLR). Based on the analysis of 78 students’ responses on the pre- and post-surveys, it was revealed that the students experienced significant increases in their SDLR in 18 out of 46 items, and many were related to learning strategy management, examination management, and time management. While male students showed an increase in five items, female students revealed an increase in 19 items, mostly related to learning strategy management, stress management, and assignment management. In the analysis of the relative significance of the change, the females revealed a more meaningful increase of their SDLR in seven items compared to the males. The items were focused on assignment management,...

Effects of L1 Versus L2 Audio and Textual Glosses on L2 Vocabulary Learning
Ehsan Rassaei, Peter Mitchell (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario

Resumen:

Although a number of studies investigated the effects of different gloss types on L2 vocabulary learning, the interaction between the language and modality of glosses remains underexplored. The present study thus examined the effects of the modality and language of glossing on L2 vocabulary learning. To this end, the study employed a within-subjects design to test the impacts of four combinations of L1 versus L2 and audio-based versus text-based glosses on L2 lexical development. The participants were 49 EFL learners who read two texts, each including 28 unfamiliar words that were the same in both texts over two sessions. They were instructed to read the texts with their smartphones and touch the target words, which were underlined to see or hear the glosses, depending on the allocation of the target words to each treatment condition...

One size fits all? In search of the desirable caption display for second language learners with different caption reliance in listening comprehension
Ping-Jung Lee, Yeu-Ting Liu, Wen-Ta Tseng (2021)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: comprensión oral

Resumen:

Existing research has established captions as effective second-language (L2) or foreign language (FL) listening comprehension aids. However, due to the transient nature of captions, not all learners are capable of attending to captions in all cases. Previous work posited that to leverage the impact of technologies in learning and instruction, a better understanding of the interplay between technology and cognition is warranted. In this vein, the current study set out to investigate the effects of four different caption modes (full vs. partial vs. real-time vs. control) on the listening comprehension of 95 high-intermediate Taiwanese learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) with different caption reliance (i.e. more-caption-reliant vs. less-caption-reliant). The results showed no significant difference between the participants’...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

Emotions in language learning are increasingly recognized as playing an important role in learner motivation and flourishing in the learning process. In consequence, much of the research published to date has focused on what happens when different emotions are experienced and the various states that these may lead to. However, studies that consider how language learners understand the importance of emotions in the context of their learning efforts as well as examine ways this understanding is experienced from the perspective of a language learner are scarce in the literature. To address this gap, the present study investigates how Japanese university language learners experienced a content and language integrated learning (CLIL) course specially designed to explore emotions in language learning, including emotional literacy,...

Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

This study examined the effect of feedback, feed up (comments on goals and students’ success in achieving goals) and feed forward (comments on the next step in learning during the semester) on writing motivation, writing self-efficacy, and writing anxiety. Two hundred and ten female intermediate language learners (agemean = 17.2) were assigned to seven experimental conditions: feedback, feed up, feed forward, feedback + feed up, feedback + feed forward, feed up + feed forward, and feedback + feed up + feed forward (n = 30 for each group). Based on group assignment, the participants received feedback, feed up, and feed forward for 12 sessions and took writing motivation, writing self-efficacy, and writing anxiety scales as pretest and posttest. The results of MANOVA and paired samples t-test comparisons indicated that groups that...

Effects of Working Memory and Topic Familiarity on EFL Learners’ Oral Production
Chunyan Liu, Yan He, Chuan Liu (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: cognición y procesamiento

Resumen:

This study examined the effects of working memory and topic familiarity on English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ oral performance from psycholinguistic perspective. Sixty-one sophomores majoring in English from a university in China were divided into high and low working memory capacity groups to perform two oral tasks of familiar and unfamiliar topics. The results demonstrated that working memory exerted significant effect on accuracy, fluency and overall grade, but no significant effect on syntactic or lexical complexity was found. Topic familiarity significantly affected lexical complexity, accuracy, fluency and overall grade, but syntactic complexity remained unaffected. Moreover, working memory and topic familiarity had significant interaction effects on fluency. Participants with high working memory capacity achieved the...

Online journaling and language learning in intensive summer study abroad programs
Theresa Schenker (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: study abroad/estudios en el extranjero

Resumen:

In spite of the superior effects of semester- or year-long educational experiences abroad, the majority of students prefers short-term study abroad for which participation numbers are steadily rising. Due to the increased student interest in short-term study abroad options, investigations into how a short stay abroad can be designed to maximize learning outcomes for participants are important. While some studies suggest that technology can have negative impacts on language learning during study abroad, effective inclusion of technology can maximize learning. This article summarizes the results of three years of research investigating the effects of daily online journaling during an intensive German summer program on second language (L2) learners’ writing skills during an intensive German summer program. The context of the program will...
