Resumen:
This study examined variation in learners’ individual differences in data-driven learning, including foreign language enjoyment and anxiety, engagement, and autonomy, as well as learners’ writing quality and the impact of these individual differences on writing quality. Using a longitudinal mixed-methods design, this study tracked changes in the individual differences and writing quality of 15 English-major English-as-a-foreign-language undergraduates across 3 time points. Quantitative data were analyzed using linear mixed-effects models and post-hoc pairwise comparisons, while qualitative data were examined through thematic analysis. The results showed that the data-driven-learning approach contributed to a significant increase in learning autonomy and writing quality. Furthermore, learners’ foreign language enjoyment, behavioral...

Resumen:
Este artículo tiene como objetivo señalar la importancia de incluir y aprovechar en el aula de español con fines profesionales (Efp) los nuevos materiales del ámbito del turismo que han surgido en los últimos años. El trabajo parte del análisis pragmalingüístico de un corpus de elaboración propia de comentarios negativos de TripAdvisor. Después se señalan sus posibilidades didácticas para su implementación en el aula de español del turismo.

Resumen:
This study investigates the effects of two task factors (i.e. task complexity and task sequence) and an interlocutor factor (i.e. interlocutor familiarity) on Chinese English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ self-repair strategies during synchronous online task-based interaction. Four decision-making tasks were conducted to elicit oral interactions from 44 low-level proficiency EFL learners, who were required to complete the tasks in pairs in either a simple-to-complex sequence or a complex-to-simple sequence. Information about the learners’ familiarity with their partners was collected through interviews. Learners’ self-repair was analysed in terms of various recycling and replacement strategies. The results revealed that complex tasks facilitated learners in replacing items to solve problems, while the simple-to-complex task...

Resumen:
Listening instruction in language education often remains product-oriented, focusing on comprehension accuracy rather than awareness of cognitive processes and learner self-regulation. Grounded in metacognitive and self-regulated learning frameworks, this study examined the effectiveness of an artificial intelligence (AI)-mediated metacognitive listening textbook designed to promote metacognitive awareness and learner autonomy through guided reflection and adaptive feedback. The textbook implemented a four-phase metacognitive cycle (planning, monitoring, evaluating, reflecting) supported by AI feedback that helped learners diagnose comprehension challenges, plan strategies, and monitor progress. A 12-week quasi-experimental mixed-methods design was conducted with 500 upper-secondary learners divided into experimental (n = 250) and...

Resumen:
Although the effects of different types of written corrective feedback (WCF) have been examined in great detail, learners’ revision behavior in response to WCF has not been systematically investigated. The current study compared students’ classroom revision behaviors when they worked in pairs and when they worked individually. It further compared the effects of students’ collaborative and individual revision of teachers’ indirect WCF on accuracy development in their subsequent writing. A total of 36 learners of English as a second language (ESL) completed four timed essays over an 8-week academic session. The instructor provided indirect WCF on students’ essays, and the students revised their writing either individually (the self-correction group) or in pairs (the pair-correction group). The students’ revision behavior was analysed in...

Resumen:
Given much attention associated with learner engagement in second language (L2) writing, an increasing body of studies has reported that learner engagement with feedback is a critical construct to enhance English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ writing achievement. However, little research has been conducted to explore the predictive effect of grit and examine the mediating role of learner engagement with feedback in the relationship between grit and English writing achievement (EWA) in the underlying mechanism of L2 writing. Therefore, the current study aims to address these under-researched issues by investigating a mediation model of L2 grit, learner engagement with feedback, and EWA among English major students. The findings demonstrated that: (1) perseverance-of-effort variation in L2 grit predicted variance in learner...

Resumen:
Research has consistently demonstrated that parental involvement plays a key role in children’s early second language (L2) development. However, little is known about how different aspects of parental involvement in children’s L2 learning are configured and how these differentiated combinations of parental involvement are associated with children’s L2 motivation and engagement. Moving beyond prior studies, which typically focused on the effects of single aspects of parental involvement, this study utilized a person-centered approach to examine the configuration patterns of various indicators of parental involvement in children’s L2 learning (i.e. parental autonomy support, psychological control, and behavioral control). Data were collected from a sample of 702 seventh graders ( Mage = 13.09, SD = 1.64; 50.14% girls) in two major...

Resumen:
The present study offers insights on understanding motivation to learn a second language (L2) through implementation of the Exploratory Practice principles within the context of English as a foreign language at a university in Spain, and on discovering opportunities to enhance this. The account sits within the domain of the possible selves and the theoretical framework of the L2 Motivational Self System. Student-led visualisation – a twist on teacher-led visualisation – is the key ‘Potentially Exploitable Pedagogic Activity’ (PEPA), explored as a device for inviting a near-future L2 self-guide into the here-and-now. This PEPA evolved out of stages of understanding, including student dismissal as ‘fantasies’ their possible professional L2 selves in a remoter future. Through classroom observation, template analysis of imagery scripts,...

Resumen:
This study examined how timing influences writing behaviors and associated cognitive activities in second language users during computer-assisted collaborative writing and whether task complexity mediates this relationship. The study involved 56 Chinese participants with English proficiency levels at CEFR B2 and C1. They were randomly arranged into 28 pairs. Each pair completed two counterbalanced writing tasks in a reading-to-write format, differing in cognitive complexity. The simple task version involved summarizing a single text, whereas the complex task version required writing a summary of three texts. Keystroke logging software tracked the participants’ typing behaviors during the tasks....

Resumen:
Motivation to learn languages strongly correlates with language achievement, and the school context has a great influence on the motivation of young learners (YLs). A key rationale for the implementation of content and language integrated learning (CLIL) programs, therefore, was pupil motivation. Very few studies have measured motivation in this context, especially in primary schools. Even fewer have done so in bilingual areas, where the continuation of widespread use of the regional language often depends on its presence in the school system and where CLIL reduces this presence. To address these gaps, motivation towards the foreign language (FL), English, and the regional language, Basque, was measured in 399 YLs of English (aged 10–12 years) in Basque immersion schools. The learners were divided into a CLIL group (n = 230), with...
