Empowering critical digital literacy in EFL: Teachers’ evaluation of didactic materials involving the recognition of presupposed information
Nicola Brocca, Viviana Masia, Davide Garassino (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: competencia digital

Resumen:

Texto completo

This article proposes the use of a textual analysis technique involving the recognition of linguistic implicitness to promote Critical Digital Literacy (CDL) in the English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom. The technique, called Implicit Content Extraction (ICE), allows for the detection and analysis of (non- bona fide ) presuppositions, thus enabling students to identify how much and what potentially manipulative information is being conveyed in a text. ICE has been tested on ready-to-use communicative materials. The materials were evaluated by EFL teachers ( N = 10) who participated in a semi-structured interview. The analysis shows a positive reception of the materials, which meet the...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación

Resumen:

Self-efficacy, the belief in one’s own capability, is an important element in students’ academic success and positive functioning in school settings. However, self-efficacy, like motivation, is easily frustrated by the social environment in school. Although studies have investigated the cross-theoretical relationship between self-efficacy and autonomy support in English as a foreign language (EFL) classrooms in a university and a secondary school setting, it has not been examined in the primary school context. To address the research gap, the present study explored the relationship that might exist between self-efficacy and perceived autonomy support in primary EFL classrooms. The participants were 454 fifth-grade students from three primary schools in Japan and Taiwan. They responded to scales measuring academic self-efficacy and...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: aula invertida/flipped learning

Resumen:

This study investigates patterns associated with the integration of video-based tasks within a flipped classroom model grounded in task-based language teaching (TBLT) in relation to English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ speaking fluency, accuracy, and engagement. TBLT emphasizes meaning-focused, real-world tasks that encourage authentic communication and learner autonomy. The study involved 50 Indonesian university students enrolled in an advanced speaking course. Over 6 weeks, participants engaged with TED Talk videos outside the classroom and completed structured in-class speaking tasks aligned with TBLT principles. Quantitative findings showed observable differences between pre- and post-participation assessments, with gains in fluency (+1.56) and accuracy (+1.36) based on CEFR-aligned assessments and paired-sample t -tests...

Exploring the relationship between linguistic knowledge and strategy use in listening comprehension
Daniel Fung, Ernesto Macaro (2021)

Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: estrategias de aprendizaje

Resumen:

The language learner strategies research field has often tried to identify the good language learner (GLL) by distinguishing more proficient from less proficient learners. However the notion of ‘good’ may be problematic without taking into account an individual’s linguistic knowledge (LK). This article foregrounds LK in relation to strategy use in the context of ‘listening to the teacher’: a language use task relatively under-researched. Secondary school students in Hong Kong (n = 646) completed a questionnaire and tests of LK including vocabulary and grammar. Lower LK learners reported using more translation strategies, whereas those with higher LK reported using a range of additional strategies. A further cluster analysis, however, indicated that a sub-group of lower LK learners were comparably strategic with the higher LK group...

The effectiveness of corpus use in ESL/EFL writing: A meta-analysis
Thuy Thi-Nhu Ngo, Howard Hao-Jan Chen (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Temas: corpus

Resumen:

The present study performs a meta-analysis to examine the effectiveness of corpus use in English as a second language (ESL) / English as a foreign language (EFL) writing. Data from 30 studies encompassing 56 effect sizes reported between 2000 and 2022 were collected for the analysis. Furthermore, multiple meta-regression analyses were conducted to explore the variables that may influence the observed effects. These variables are extracted from three groups of data: publication data, population data, and treatment data. The results demonstrate a large overall effect size (g = 0.95) for the impact of corpus use in ESL/EFL student writing performance. This finding suggests that utilizing corpora significantly enhances students’ writing abilities in these contexts. Moreover, the analyses of moderators reveal that the observed effects can...

Exploring the role of strategy instruction on learners’ ability to write authentic email requests to faculty
Esther Usó-Juan (2022)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: pragmática

Resumen:

This study used a pre-test post-test research design to investigate the role of explicit strategy instruction on Spanish English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ ability to write authentic email requests to faculty. Drawing on Taguchi’s (2018) classification of pragmatics learning strategies, the instructional intervention followed a strategy-based approach to help learners understand the form–function–context mapping of email requests in the academic context. A total of 110 naturally occurring email requests for action addressed to three faculty members were collected at two different times: as a pre-test (i.e. before engaging learners in the instructional period), and as a post-test (i.e. after learners’ participation in the treatment sessions). Learners’ email messages were analysed considering both their appropriateness of...

Oral corrective feedback and learner uptake in L2 classrooms: Non-formulaic vs. formulaic errors
Leila Gholami (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación

Resumen:

An extensive number of corrective feedback (CF) studies have examined learners’ errors with grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and spelling (non-formulaic forms) and established an association between learners’ uptake of CF and their second language development. However, learners’ errors with formulaic sequences (FSs) comprising idioms, collocations, lexical bundles, and compounds (formulaic forms) have received scant attention in CF research. This study investigated any associations among formulaic vs. non-formulaic errors, CF types, uptake, and successful uptake rate by drawing on the audio-recordings of 36 hours of primarily meaning-oriented teacher–learner interactions in three advanced English as a foreign language classes. The findings demonstrated that learners made more errors with FSs, whereas CF was provided significantly...

Exploring the roles of language aptitude and L2 grit in L2 achievement: Mediation of foreign language learning boredom
Haiyong Zhao, Yi Zhang (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: aptitud lingüística

Resumen:

While the significance of the cognitive language aptitude (aptitude) and the affective second language (L2) grit for L2 achievement has been well demonstrated, their comparative contributions and the mechanisms underlying their predictive effects remain insufficiently understood. To address this gap, this study examined the predictive effects of aptitude and L2 grit on L2 achievement with foreign language learning boredom (FLLB) as a mediator. The data was collected from 156 English-major university students in China and analysed via structural equation modeling (SEM). The results indicated that (1) aptitude and L2 grit significantly and positively predicted L2 achievement with the former showing a stronger strength; (2) FLLB negatively mediated the effects of aptitude and the consistency of interest (CI) dimension of L2 grit on L2...

Effects of teacher intervention and type of peer feedback on student writing revision
Haiyang Sun, Mingchao Wang (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación

Resumen:

Peer feedback has been widely used in English as a foreign language (EFL) writing classes, but its effect is highly variable and its quality and validity are often questioned by students as well as teachers. This research aims to explore the effects of teacher intervention on student use of different types of peer feedback and on their self-revision of writing texts. The study employed a quasi-experimental design with two experimental groups receiving either the teacher’s direct correction for erroneous peer feedback or indication of inaccurate peer feedback with symbols and a control group receiving no teacher intervention on peer feedback. One hundred and ten non-English major graduate students in three parallel writing classes participated in the study. The study lasted for one and a half months, during which the participants...

Bridging the research–pedagogy gap: ESL teachers’ beliefs about L2 fluency and fluency-enhancing classroom practices
Ayano Kawasaki (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

Despite substantial development in second-language (L2) fluency research, fluency remains underexplored in L2 teaching. Emerging evidence suggests that research-based fluency-enhancing activities are not fully utilized in classrooms, partly due to teachers’ relatively broad conceptualization of fluency. To address this issue, this study examines (1) teachers’ beliefs about fluency and fluency-enhancing activities and (2) the extent to which these beliefs are reflected in their classroom practices. By triangulating data from questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observations, this study contributes to the growing body of L2 fluency research, which has primarily focused on teachers’ self-reported data, thereby paving the way toward bridging the research–pedagogy gap. Using a mixed-methods approach, the analysis revealed (1) a...
