Expression and Meaning: Studies in the Theory of Speech Acts
John R. Searle (1979)
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: libro

Politeness: Some Universals in Language Usage
Penelope Brown, Stephen Levinson (1987)
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: libro

The Climate Turn in Language Teaching
Francisca Aguiló Mora, Almudena Marín Cobos (2026)
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: libro

Metodología: trabajo teórico

Temas: sostenibilidad

Resumen:

This Element critically explores the notion of climate education in the humanities and how it should embrace the teaching, learning, and research of second and heritage languages (SL/HL), starting with basic language programs. Because language is inseparable from the spheres where climate narratives and discourses circulate. The interconnectedness between language (as discourse), sociolinguistics, culture, social justice, and the climate crisis entails an approach to Climate Humanities that requires a paradigmatic and epistemological turn. By addressing how SL/HL education works and whom it serves, the Element proposes a root-level curricular and program transformation for advancing an equitable language classroom with a focus on climate and sustainability. Comprehensive sections delve into three applied teaching principles: (1)...

Linguistic Foundations for Second Language Teaching and Learning
Kathy L. Sands, Lynn Santelmann, Marnie Jo Petray (2026)
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: libro

Metodología: trabajo teórico

Temas: lingüística

Resumen:

Bringing together an international team of scholars from various linguistic areas, theoretical viewpoints, and educational contexts, this book makes the case for strengthening the role of linguistics in second language (L2) teaching and learning. Seeing firsthand how the strengths and tools of the science of language contribute greatly to pedagogical effectiveness in the L2 classroom, the authors of each chapter lay out the strengths of linguistics for L2 teaching and learning with examples, case studies, research, anecdotal evidence, illustrations, and sample activities for the language classroom. The book argues as well for the place of L2 theory and data in linguistic inquiry and linguistics education. Bringing these disparate disciplines together around the shared reality of language itself has great promise of mutual benefit....

Acceptability Experiments in Romance Languages
Tania Leal, Timothy Gupton, Grant Goodall (2021)
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: capítulo

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Temas: sintaxis

Resumen:

We present a selective review of studies on Romance languages wherein acceptability experiments played an important role in advancing our knowledge of the grammars of particular linguistic varieties and, by extension, furthering our knowledge of human language and linguistic theory. First, we examine recent studies on word order in wh-questions across varieties of Spanish. Next, we examine the value of acceptability experiments in the study of infrequent structures (e.g. clitic left-dislocation, focus fronting). We highlight the importance of data triangulation by examining studies of information focus in Spanish, emphasizing the impact that methodological choices can have on results. We also examine control and raising structures in Brazilian Portuguese, where conflicting results have required innovative methodological approaches....

Technology and Language Teaching
Ursula Stickler (2022)
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: libro

Temas: tecnología educativa

Resumen:

This Element is a practical guide for language teachers intending to upgrade their online teaching. During the COVID-19 pandemic many teachers were forced to move their teaching online without proper preparation and support. This has led to frustration and stress, and sometimes decisions based not on sound pedagogy but on technological constraints, requirements and opportunities. To balance this negative experience, a research-based, pedagogy-focussed approach has been taken in this volume: step-by-step, teachers are shown how to make decisions about the choice and usage of online tools, how to adapt their pedagogy and teaching strategies to fit with online learning environments, and how to create a positive learning experience for their students. In six sections this Element takes teachers from epistemological considerations to...

Intercultural and Transcultural Awareness in Language Teaching
Will Baker (2022)
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: libro

Metodología: trabajo teórico

Temas: cultura

Resumen:

The central aim of language teaching is typically to prepare learners to communicate through the language learnt. However, much current language teaching theory and practice is based on a simplistic view of communication that fails to match the multilingual and intercultural reality of the majority of second language (L2) use. This Element examines the relationship between language and culture through an L2 in intercultural and transcultural communication. It puts forward the argument that we need to go beyond communicative competence in language teaching and focus instead on intercultural and transcultural awareness. Implications for pedagogic practice are explored including intercultural and transcultural language education.
