Role-based interaction analysis for FLL: A sociocognitive UBL perspective
Hao-Zhang Xiao (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: interacción

Resumen:

This article discusses, from a sociocognitive perspective, the integration of usage-based linguistics (UBL) models in favor of conversation analysis (CA) for second language acquisition (SLA). On this basis, it presents a pedagogical approach, viz. role-based interaction analysis (RBIA) for foreign language learning (FLL), by scaffolding, tracking and measuring learners’ behaviors of learning spoken grammatical and pragmatic features in intertextual affordances. Two groups were designated randomly as the experimental group (n = 30) and the comparison group (n = 32) to examine their uptake of the targeted features via explicit and implicit RBIA (i.e. two different ways of learning/processing in role-based interaction) respectively. Results showed: (1) there were significant differences between the two groups in the learning of...

Directives as strategies for building teacher identity: Enhancing collaborative classroom interactions
Si Neng Kot, Roberval Teixeira e Silva (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

This study is theoretically grounded in interactional sociolinguistics, drawing specifically on speech act theory and politeness strategies to discuss how language choices negotiate social relations. It investigates classroom power dynamics by analyzing how teachers construct identities with directive speech acts. The research employs an ethnographic microanalysis to analyze discourse in a video-recorded interaction in a Portuguese as a foreign language (PFL) classroom for Chinese learners at a university in Macau. This methodological approach allows for a fine-grained examination of the linguistic design of directives and their impact on classroom interaction. The analysis reveals that the teacher strategically wields directives to enact interconnected identity positions, each shaping a distinct power dynamic: a negotiatory authority...

Learner proficiency and EFL learning through task rehearsal and performance
Bao Trang Thi Nguyen, Jonathan Newton (2020)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enfoque por tareas

Resumen:

This study examined the impact of learner proficiency on the occurrence and resolution of language-related episodes (LREs) in rehearsal of interactive speaking tasks and on the subsequent use of language items from LREs during performance of the same tasks in front of the class. Forty-eight learners from six intact English as a foreign language (EFL) classes at a Vietnamese high school were divided into three proficiency groups, each consisting of eight dyads. Group 1 was higher proficiency (HH) dyads; Group 2 consisted of mixed proficiency dyads (HL) and Group 3 was lower proficiency (LL) dyads. All the pairs rehearsed and then consecutively performed a problem-solving task and a debate task in two separate classroom lessons. The total data included 48 rehearsals and 48 corresponding performances collected during normal classroom...

The mediating role of willingness to communicate: Linking dialogic teaching to student discursive engagement in L2 classrooms
Pengjin Wang, Gaowei Chen (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

While teachers bear the responsibility for facilitating discourse in second language (L2) classrooms, this study examines a specific pathway linking pedagogy to student participation. We investigated the relationship between a representative dialogic teaching strategy, academically productive talk (APT), and students’ discursive engagement in class. Using a sample of 490 students from seven primary and secondary schools, we analyzed associations among students’ perceptions of their teachers’ APT, students’ willingness to communicate (WTC), L2 learning motivation, L2 communication confidence, and their discursive engagement in L2 English classrooms. Structural equation modeling revealed that student-perceived teacher APT was positively related to both students’ WTC and their discursive engagement with peers. WTC partially mediated the...

Exploring the silence of Japanese EFL learners: Its relationship with the degree of willingness to communicate (WTC)
Rintaro Sato (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

The concept of willingness to communicate (WTC) is pivotal in understanding student engagement in English as a foreign language (EFL) classrooms. As a dynamic and multifaceted construct, WTC is subject to continual fluctuations throughout the communication process, often changing situationally. Traditionally, learner silence in class or during second language (L2) conversations is perceived negatively, as it can signal a lack of motivation to speak, thereby impeding optimal language acquisition. However, silence can also function as a communicative strategy or reflect learners’ essential feelings and emotions. This study explored the relationship between Japanese EFL learners’ situational WTC and their instances of silence during L2 (English) conversations. Participants were recruited for the study and were asked to deliver short...

Foro de profesores de ELE
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: propuesta didáctica

Temas: interacción

Resumen:

Texto completo

Social psychological accounts of peer emotion transfer in EFL classrooms: A doubly latent multilevel analysis
Kaiqi Shao, Brian Parkinson (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

Based on theories of emotion contagion and social appraisal in interpersonal affect transfer and the control-value theory of achievement emotions, the present study examined associations between students’ perceptions of peer emotions and their own self-perceived emotions in English as a foreign language (EFL) classrooms. Data were collected from 103 seventh to ninth grade classrooms (n = 3,643) using self-report questionnaires. Doubly latent multilevel structural equation modeling showed that perceived peer enjoyment, anxiety and boredom, and students’ corresponding emotions for language learning, were positively related and that the effects of perceived peer enjoyment, anxiety and boredom on corresponding student emotions were mediated by control and value appraisals at the individual level. At the class level, however, the mediation...

Social interaction in the Spanish classroom: How proficiency and linguistic background impact vocabulary learning
C. Cecilia Tocaimaza-Hatch, Jonathan Santo (2023)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: español como lengua extranjera

Resumen:

Spanish learners engaged in two-way interaction gap tasks where, through social interaction, they identified and defined low-frequency vocabulary. Participants (referred to as actors to differentiate them from task partners) completed two such tasks. Each time, they collaborated with different partners of varying degrees of Spanish proficiency and linguistic background, either an L2 learner or a heritage speaker (HS). The purpose of the study was thus to shed light on if and how features of the collaborating partners in mixed (HS–L2) and matched (L2–L2; HS–HS) partnerships impacted vocabulary learning. Through a mixed methods analysis of the data (perception measures and qualitative responses, plus pre- and post-vocabulary tests), it was deduced that learners’ language proficiency level alone was not associated with differences in...
