How learners’ trust in teachers shapes their feedback-seeking behaviors: A mixed-methods study
Mahshid Mahbodi, Mostafa Papi, Dominik Wolff (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar ✕

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación

Resumen:

This mixed-methods study examined how learners’ competence-based and affect-based trust in their teachers predicted their feedback-seeking behaviors both directly and indirectly through their internal cost–value analyses. Questionnaire data were collected from 207 foreign language learners at a North American university, and interviews were conducted with seven participants with high vs. low levels of trust in their teachers. Multiple regression results showed that competence-based and affect-based trust predicted learners’ feedback-seeking behaviors (both monitoring and inquiry), and these relationships were mostly mediated either positively by feedback value or negatively by the self-presentation cost of feedback-seeking. Analysis of the qualitative data supported the quantitative findings, highlighting radically different concerns...

Can Well-Being Translate into Better Writing? A Chain Mediation Model of the Impact of Subjective Well-Being on L2 Writing Achievement
Zhaoyang Shan (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar ✕

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

This study investigates the relationship between subjective well-being (SWB) and second language (L2) writing achievement (WA), focusing on the sequential mediating roles of L2 writing enjoyment (L2WE) and L2 writing self-efficacy (L2WS). A sample of Chinese university EFL learners (n = 322) participated in a survey measuring SWB, L2WE, L2WS, and L2WA. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to test the hypothesized chain mediation model. Results revealed that SWB was positively associated with both L2WE and L2WS, which in turn significantly predicted L2WA. Although the direct effect of SWB on L2WA was non-significant, the total indirect effect via L2WE and L2WS was significant. Specifically, L2WE mediated the link between SWB and L2WA, L2WS mediated the link between SWB and L2WA, and a sequential mediation pathway (SWB → L2WE...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

This quantitative study examines whether and to what extent affective factors (i.e. motivation, self-confidence, risk-taking, L2 speaking anxiety, and grit) and virtual intercultural experiences are linked to willingness to communicate in a second language (L2 WTC) in in-class, out-of-class, and digital settings. Participants included 176 Korean undergraduate and graduate students of English as a foreign language (EFL). After adjusting for demographic factors, hierarchical regression analyses revealed three major results: first, those with higher levels of L2 motivation and grit as well as a lower level of L2 speaking anxiety had higher L2 WTC inside the classroom. Second, students who majored in English and had higher levels of L2 self-confidence and risk-taking had higher L2 WTC outside the classroom. Third, individuals who were...

Detalles Cerrar ✕

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación

Resumen:

Engaging students in the second language (L2) classroom is a critical task that requires a clear understanding of the multilayered characteristics of the L2 classroom and the motivational mechanisms through which these characteristics influence student engagement. This study contributes to the L2 engagement literature in this regard by examining the relationship among students’ expectancy and task value belief, their perception of the three L2 classroom conditions, namely classroom structure, teaching relevance, and peer support, and their engagement in an instructed L2 learning setting. Structural equation modelling was employed to analyse self-report data collected from 413 first year students of English as a foreign language (EFL) in Vietnam. Results suggest that teaching relevance and peer support significantly predicted students...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: diferencias individuales

Resumen:

Although the number of studies into grit in second/foreign language (L2) learning is on the rise, available empirical evidence is still scant, particularly in relation to links between the two facets of (L2) grit (i.e. perseverance and interest), positive (i.e. enjoyment, curiosity) and negative (i.e. in-class and after-class boredom, anxiety) emotions as well as motivation. In addition, most research has been quantitative in nature and has mainly targeted Asian contexts. In order to fill these gaps, a mixed-methods study was undertaken among English majors and English student teachers in Hungary. It aimed to: (1) characterize the participants in terms of the variables under investigation, (2) identify their profiles in relation to general grit and L2 grit, and (3) determine the differences between the identified clusters with respect...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

Previous research has highlighted the pivotal role of self-efficacy in English writing proficiency among various cultures and educational levels. In higher education, particularly at the graduate level, writing proficiency is crucial for academic success and professional development. Therefore, it is essential to understand factors that influence writing proficiency, such as self-efficacy and self-regulated learning (SRL) strategies. However, there is a gap in research on how distinct profiles of a combination of self-efficacy in writing and self-efficacy in self-regulation among graduate students correlate with the use of SRL strategies, writing performance, and demographic features. To fill this gap, we examined the English writing self-efficacy profiles among 1,308 Chinese graduate students and explored how these profiles are...

Detalles Cerrar ✕

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: comprensión oral

Resumen:

Focusing on the teaching of listening strategies to second language (L2) learners, this study sought to revisit Renandya and Farrell’s (2011) claims that explicit listening strategy instruction for lower-proficiency learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) is a fruitless endeavor. As such, we implemented a quasi-experimental study to measure the effectiveness of a metacognitive intervention for a convenience sample of lower-proficiency (CEFR A2) Japanese university EFL learners (n = 129). The training program focused on an explicit process-based approach, involving integrated experiential learning tasks and guided reflections, to develop learners’ L2 listening skills. Data collection consisted of TOEIC® test scores, listening comprehension tests, cloze tests, a listening self-efficacy questionnaire, and a post-treatment survey...

Control-value appraisals, academic emotions, and student engagement: A case of Chinese EFL undergraduates
Jinfen Xu, Jiaqi Yang, Dengke He (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar ✕

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

Student engagement has long been recognized as a vital predictor of academic success, but how it associates with control-value appraisals and academic emotions of Chinese undergraduates of English as a foreign language (EFL) is underexplored. This article hence invoked the control-value theory and investigated the general profile of Chinese undergraduates’ control-value appraisals, academic emotions and student engagement in English learning, and the interrelationships between the three constructs. Descriptive statistics of the questionnaire data revealed that the 323 undergraduate participants generally showed a moderate level of control-value appraisals and engagement in English learning; furthermore, they experienced a variety of academic emotions, with positive emotions as more frequently experienced than negative ones....

Who am I when I teach with technology? Exploring language teacher identity and Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK)
Li Ruyang, Ye Hedi (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar ✕

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: identidad

Resumen:

This study examines how language teacher identity shapes technology integration through the lens of the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge-language teacher identity framework. A mixed-methods design was employed, involving survey data from 320 university foreign-language teachers and qualitative data from interviews, observations, and journals with 30 participants. Quantitative results showed that pedagogical beliefs and self-efficacy significantly predicted Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge levels. Qualitative findings revealed that identity conflicts, especially tensions between traditional roles and innovation demands, often constrained technology use, despite high confidence or competence. By foregrounding identity as a mediating mechanism, the study positions the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge-...

Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar ✕

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

This study aimed to examine the relationships between English as a foreign language (EFL) students’ language mindsets (i.e. entity and incremental beliefs about general language intelligence, second language aptitude, and age sensitivity in language learning) and graded performance by considering the mediating roles of their perceived instrumentality as well as four aspects of engagement (i.e. agentic engagement, behavioral engagement, emotional engagement, and cognitive engagement) within English classes. A total of 526 EFL students voluntarily participated in the present study. A latent factor correlation analysis, a series of multiple regression analyses, and a structural equation modeling analysis were conducted to analyse the data. The results showed that EFL students’ language mindsets, four aspects of engagement, perceived...
