Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: atención a la forma

Resumen:

Texto completo

Previous studies on incidental focus on form (FonF) have mostly focused on its overall effectiveness. This study is an attempt to further examine the effectiveness of incidental FonF with regard to different linguistic categories (vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation). To this end, eight hours of a free discussion English as a foreign language (EFL) class with 12 upper-intermediate learners were observed, and instances of focus on form episodes (FFEs) were identified. Uptake sheets were also used to identify the learners’ noticing of FFEs and their novelty to them. To measure the effects of incidental FonF on learning different linguistic categories, individualized immediate and delayed post-...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación

Resumen:

Higher education serves as a fundamental driver of social progress and individual professional development. This study examines the motivational profiles of 112 Spanish-speaking college students who are learning Chinese as a foreign language, focusing on the factors that influence their decision to study this language and their academic satisfaction within the university context. The study is based on an analysis of data collected from these students, using statistical analyses to explore relationships between motivational factors, academic satisfaction, and academic performance. The findings reveal that intrinsic motivations—such as interest in Chinese culture and traditions, personal growth, and intellectual challenge—predominate over extrinsic motivations, including prospective employment opportunities, when selecting Chinese as a...

Connecting language proficiency to teaching ability: A meta-analysis
Farahnaz Faez, Michael Karas, Takumi Uchihara (2021)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Temas: profesorado

Resumen:

Most English language teachers around the world speak English as an additional language, and their level of English proficiency is often a matter of concern for them and their employers who associate higher levels of language proficiency with more effective teaching skills. To this end, several studies have examined the relationship between language proficiency and teachers’ beliefs about their pedagogical capabilities, commonly known as self-efficacy. While generally studies show a positive relationship between language proficiency and self-perceived teaching ability, findings regarding the strength of the relationship, the role of specific language skills (e.g. speaking, listening), and how they interact with different teaching abilities (e.g. classroom management) are inconsistent. By combining data from 19 studies, this meta-...

Discursive positioning in heritage – second language learner interaction: A case study of the dynamic construction of linguistic expertise
Ana Fernández-Dobao (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: español como lengua de herencia

Resumen:

Drawing on positioning and sociocultural theories, this study examines heritage language (HL) and second language (L2) learners’ negotiation of linguistic expertise in mixed interactions. Through a case study of four interactions between the same HL learner and three different L2 classmates, it investigates how learners’ positioning regarding linguistic expertise shifts across interlocutors and time, shaping language learning. Data was collected at four different stages of a 10-week high-intermediate Spanish course, as learners completed four collaborative writing tasks. Posttests, a pretest, and two questionnaires were also administered. The analysis of discursive positioning showed how the HL learner initially enacted the linguistic expert position associated with his heritage status. As experiences accumulated and pre-established...

Technology-mediated tasks for the development of L2 pragmatics
Marta González-Lloret (2022)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Temas: pragmática

Resumen:

Developing pragmatic competence implies the learning of the norms and principles that affect the behavior of participants in a culture (i.e. sociopragmatics) and the ability to choose the language to realize those norms (i.e. pragmalinguistics). Learning to be pragmatically appropriate in the second language (L2) is not easy, and although it is possible without instruction, research shows that instruction helps development (Plonsky & Zhuang, 2019). This article advocates that technology-mediated tasks are an excellent and effective pedagogic tool to promote L2 pragmatic development. The article will introduce some key findings of studies that incorporate technology and pragmatics as well as those that have investigated tasks and L2 pragmatics to then focus on those studies that incorporate the three elements: tasks, technology and...

Impacts of social and emotional learning (SEL) on English learning achievements in Hong Kong secondary schools
Barry Bai, Bin Shen, Jing Wang (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

With growing attention attached to young students’ social and emotional well-being besides their cognitive development, social and emotional learning (SEL) has been increasingly researched in general school education over the past decades with its positive effects on academic performance reported. However, SEL research has not emerged in English as a foreign language (EFL) learning contexts. To bridge the void, the current research aimed to profile Hong Kong secondary school students’ SEL competence level and examine the intricate relationships among the four SEL competence clusters (i.e. self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and social management) and English learning achievements. The results indicated an overall medium level of SEL competence among 315 secondary school grade level 3 students and suggested a gap between...

Mobile-assisted seamless Chinese vocabulary learning: learners’ perspectives on lexical variety, engagement, and challenges
Xiaosheng Zhou (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario

Resumen:

This study introduces ‘seamless Chinese vocabulary learning’ (SCVL), a mobile-assisted initiative designed to bridge learners’ everyday experiences with formal language instruction. The SCVL framework integrates mobile technologies to foster vocabulary acquisition through artefact creation in a seamless learning environment. Employing a design-based research (DBR) methodology with mixed-methods design, 32 participants of varying proficiency levels took part in a 16-week intervention facilitated via the DingTalk platform. Quantitative analysis of 2,397 artefacts using the type–token ratio (TTR) indicated significant improvements in lexical variety across sentences, paragraphs, and essays across performance groups. Two-way ANOVA and post-hoc tests revealed significant main effects of time and group. A notable Group × Time interaction...

A longitudinal study of foreign language enjoyment and boredom: A latent growth curve modeling
Mariusz Kruk, Mirosล‚aw Pawlak, Majid Elahi Shirvan (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

The present research aimed to explore the dynamic growth of two emotional constructs: foreign language enjoyment (FLE) and foreign language learning boredom (FLLB) among L2 learners. To do so, we used a method that would capture the inherent dynamicity of L2 learners’ enjoyment and boredom during an EFL course. To this aim, a bivariate latent growth curve model (LGCM) was employed to examine the covariance between 412 EFL learners’ initial and growth levels of FLE and FLLB on four measurement occasions at two-week intervals. To collect the data, the original FLE scale and the newly developed FLLB scale were used. The model including the covariance between intercepts and slopes of FLE and FLLB was tested in Mplus 7. The analysis of the data revealed that the covariance between the intercept and slope of the FLE and FLLB was...

Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

This paper examines how the growth mindset in vocabulary learning is influenced by student engagement when foreign language enjoyment is considered a mediating factor. Relying on positive psychology and a correlational research design, we collected data from 390 students majoring in English as a foreign language at the university and conducted statistical modeling. The findings of this paper indicated moderate levels of student engagement, growth mindset in vocabulary learning, and foreign language enjoyment, with strong positive relationships among them. Foreign language enjoyment emerged as a key mediating factor in the correlation between student engagement and growth mindset in vocabulary learning, suggesting that improving student engagement levels and providing an enjoyable language-learning environment can enhance students’...

Inclusivity and sustainability in language practitioner researcher development: A sociocultural ecological framework
Emily Edwards, Anne Burns (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: trabajo teórico

Resumen:

Texto completo

Transformative practitioner research enables teachers to create or contribute to their own knowledge base. Recently, this research field has flourished, with numerous studies exploring how practitioner researchers develop knowledge, agency and identities, particularly through action research (AR) and exploratory practice (EP). Despite important work on the content or outcomes of language practitioner researcher development (LPRD), there is less conceptualization of how LPRD is manifested in relation to environments where language practitioners work. In this contribution to the special issue on inclusive practitioner research, we draw on sociocultural and ecological systems theories to present a...
