Exploring AI-generated feedback in peer-discussion contexts: A mixed-methods study of essay writing in secondary classrooms
Irina Engeness (2025)
Computers & Education: Artificial Intelligence
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

Texto completo

This mixed-methods study investigates how an AI-powered writing tool providing automated feedback compares with peer-generated feedback in supporting secondary students' essay writing. Two research questions guided the study: (1) Did using an AI-powered tool with AI-generated feedback yield greater gains in writing quality from the first to the final draft compared with a standard editor with peer feedback? (2) How did students’ engagement in the writing process differ in the target (used AI-generated feedback) and comparison (used peer feedback) groups, as evidenced by teacher–student and peer–peer interactions and how were these patterns associated with their conceptual understanding of...

Resumen:

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is penetrating in various social sectors, motivating a strong need for teaching AI literacy in younger generations. While substantial efforts have been made to teach AI literacy and to use AI to facilitate learning, few studies have provided empirical accounts of students' nuanced processes of using GenAI for learning. In this study, we engaged a group of high school students in leveraging ChatGPT to support their knowledge building efforts. Following the teacher's pedagogical design, students used ChatGPT for a range of distinct purposes. Student interviews showed detailed processes of using ChatGPT for knowledge building and students' emerging AI...

Resumen:

The approach of engaging students with real-world challenges to enhance collaboration and problem-solving has attracted significant interest from scholars and practitioners across diverse disciplines. Often called Challenge-Based Learning (CBL), this educational approach emphasises developing collaborative and problem-solving skills, with significant learning occurring within team settings. Prior studies highlight the influence of team composition on the efficacy of learning outcomes, pointing out that factors such as gender diversity, personality trait diversity, and a wide range of skills affect team dynamics and performance. Despite these insights, the practical organisation of these...

This study aimed at developing an instructional tool for the artificial intelligence education of young students, and used learning analytics to identify the sequential learning behavioral patterns of students during the process of learning with the instructional tool. The instructional experiment took 9 weeks. The first stage of the course was 5 weeks spent on individual learning of MIT App Inventor and Personal Image Classifier. The second stage was 4 weeks spent on cooperative learning to make a robot car and play a computational thinking board game. In the second stage, the students worked in pairs to make the robot car. Finally, they played the computational thinking board game with...

Resumen:

Artificial intelligence (AI) agents are rapidly reshaping the landscape of computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL), presenting both new opportunities and challenges for educators and learners. Despite their increasing prevalence, there remains a lack of comprehensive, theory-informed synthesis regarding the roles and impacts of AI agents within CSCL. This systematic literature review analyses 46 empirical studies published between 2014 and 2025, with the aim of clarifying the methodological and contextual characteristics of the field, the pedagogical and technological features of AI-mediated CSCL environments, the instructional and mediational functions of AI agents, and the...

Educational technology research has found that parents of young children widely share concerns about extended screen time, lack of physical activity, and lack of social interaction. Kid Space was developed to address these concerns by enabling multi-modal and immersive collaborative play-based learning. Kid Space utilizes multiple sensing technologies with an immersive physical space through a human-scale wall projection and incorporates a conversational AI agent to interact with children, understand individual progress, and personalize learning experiences in a blended physical and digital environment. To evaluate Kid Space in the wild, we conducted a multi-method user study involving a...

Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza en línea e híbrida

Resumen:

This study examines how learners’ English proficiency and individual difference factors (international posture, willingness to communicate, motivation, social presence) change, and how a small community develops, through an English course designed using the Community of Inquiry framework. Conducted over eight sessions at a university in Japan, the study involved 26 students who provided complete data for analysis. The main activities included two in-class group presentations and one individual video presentation via Google Chat. Pre- and post-tests on speaking proficiency and surveys on individual differences were administered. Reflection sheets were also collected after each activity. A paired t -test was used for the former, and SCAT (Steps for Coding and Theorization) was employed for the latter, followed by coding. Results showed...
