Individual variation in the use of the Monitor
Stephen Krashen (1978)
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: capítulo

Metodología: trabajo teórico

Temas: adquisición de segundas lenguas

Resumen:

Texto completo

Tipo: libro

Temas: morfología

Resumen:

The Routledge Handbook of Spanish Morphology presents a state-of-the-art, detailed and exhaustive overview of all aspects of Spanish morphology, paying equal attention to the empirical complexities of the morphological system and the theoretical issues that they raise.

As such, this handbook is relevant both for those interested in the facts of Spanish morphology and those interested in general morphology that want to explore how the Spanish facts illuminate our understanding of human language and current theories of morphology.

This volume is also unique in its extent and coverage. Written by an international team of leading experts in the field, it contains 42 chapters divided into four sections, covering all synchronic and diachronic aspects of Spanish morphology, including inflection; derivation; compounding and...

Key Contributions of Lexical Availability to the Study of Semantic Prototypes in Foreign Language Learning
Jaqueline Mora Guarin (2025)
Cuadernos de Investigación Filológica
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Temas: disponibilidad léxica

Resumen:

Texto completo

Lexical availability is an approach to vocabulary acquisition and a crucial variable in learners' lexical and communicative competence (Jiménez Catalán, 2014). Although several studies have been conducted in this field regarding L1 and L2 Spanish and English vocabulary learning, little has been done concerning semantic prototypes in foreign language contexts through lexical availability. Semantic prototypes are considered the most central and representative exemplars within a category (Rosch, 1975; Kleiber, 1995); thus, their role in lexical competence enables us to understand how foreign language learners organize their mental lexicon and categorize in response to semantic categories...

The effects of task complexity and task repetition on sense-aware frequency-based lexical sophistication indices in L2 writing
Mahmoud Abdi Tabari, Xiaofei Lu, Renfen Hu (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enfoque por tareas

Resumen:

Research on task-based second-language (L2) writing has largely focused on investigating how task complexity (TC) affects various aspects of written production. However, this body of research has rarely examined the effect of task repetition, either on its own or in interaction with TC. Additionally, studies have predominantly used traditional frequency-based measures of lexical sophistication, without incorporating more nuanced, sense-aware indices that could offer a deeper understanding of linguistic complexity. This study aims to explore and compare the impact of TC, task repetition, and their interaction on lexical sophistication in L2 writing, using both traditional and sense-aware frequency-based indices. Ninety-six participants completed two argumentative essays on simple and complex tasks in counterbalanced order, twice over...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Temas: enseñanza en línea e híbrida

Resumen:

This systematic review examines existing empirical second language studies on the approaches to conceptualizing and measuring online second language learner engagement in technology-mediated second-language learning/teaching settings, identifying strengths and limitations of current measures and outlining potential improvements. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) procedure, we conducted a systematic review of empirical studies on online second language learner engagement. The review focused on several key areas, including the characteristics of second language research investigating online learner engagement, the ways in which the concept of online learner engagement is conceptualized, the indicators used to operationalize it, and the primary areas of focus and key findings emerging...

Understanding motivation, behaviors, and boredom in L2 learning: Variable-centered and person-centered approaches
Dawei Wei, Ping Wang (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación

Resumen:

Language learning behaviors, such as procrastination and engagement, are concrete actions closely linked to learning outcomes, but our understanding of them, especially procrastination, is limited. Boredom is a ubiquitous negative emotion among second language (L2) learners. In researching learning behaviors and boredom, previous L2 studies have rarely considered all the core motivational variables (cost, in particular), so a full account of motivational dynamics in L2 learning is still lacking. Additionally, current knowledge on how multiple motivational constructs function together at the individual level in shaping learning behaviors and boredom remains limited. The present study aims to address these gaps by using both variable-centered and person-centered approaches. Participants were 784 university students as L2 English...

Evaluating the impact of spaced practice using computer-assisted language learning (CALL) on vocabulary learning in the classroom
Muna Hussain Muqaibal, Rowena Kasprowicz, Cathy Tissot (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario

Resumen:

This study investigated the influence of practice distribution (i.e. spacing between practice sessions) on successful vocabulary learning by examining two different time distributions, i.e. 1-day spacing (1-DS) vs. 7-day spacing (7-DS) using a freely available computer-assisted language learning programme (Quizlet). The study achieved high ecological validity through a classroom-based study with low proficiency second language (L2) English language learners at an Omani college of technology. The sample consisted of 96 participants in control (n = 33), 1-DS (n = 34) and 7-DS (n = 29) groups. The control group was a test-only group with no explicit practice activities for the target words (34 nouns). Meanwhile, the 1-DS group (one day spacing between each practice session) and 7-DS group (seven day spacing between each practice session...

Discourse Construction Mechanisms: An Eye-Tracking Study on L1, L2, and Heritage Speakers of Spanish
Adriana Cruz, Inés Recio Fernández, Mathis Teucher (2025)
Languages
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: español como lengua de herencia

Resumen:

Texto completo

This study explores the cognitive processing of discourse construction mechanisms in Spanish, focusing on counter-argumentative relations that involve anaphoric encapsulation through either pronominal (e.g., a pesar de ello) or lexical forms (e.g., a pesar de [NP]). These constructions combine procedural meaning with referential retrieval, placing complex demands on discourse integration. Using eye-tracking data from 77 participants across three speaker groups, namely, L1, heritage, and L2 speakers, this study yields three main findings: (1) nominal expressions do not incur greater processing effort than pronominal ones under optimal communicative conditions; (2) heritage and L2 speakers exhibit higher processing...

Towards a Theory of Diagnosis in Second and Foreign Language Assessment: Insights from Professional Practice Across Diverse Fields
J. Charles Alderson, Tineke Brunfaut, Luke Harding (2015)
Applied Linguistics
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: evaluación

Resumen:

Diagnostic language assessment has received increased research interest in recent years, with particular attention on methods through which diagnostic information can be gleaned from standardized proficiency tests. However, diagnostic procedures in the broader sense have been inadequately theorized to date, with the result that there is still little agreement on precisely what diagnosis in second and foreign language learning actually entails. In order to address this problem, this article investigated how diagnosis is theorized and carried out in a diverse range of professions with a view to finding commonalities that can be applied to the context of language assessment. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted with professionals from the fields of car mechanics, IT systems support, medicine, psychology and education. Data were...
