The effects of web-based text structure strategy instruction on adult Chinese ELLs’ reading comprehension and reading strategy use
Zhihong Xu, Kausalai (Kay) Wijekumar, Qing Wang (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: comprensión lectora

Resumen:

Underdeveloped reading comprehension skills can limit academic success; a particular challenge for English language learners (ELLs). The current study investigated whether a web-based text structure strategy, delivered via the Intelligent Tutoring of Structure Strategy (ITSS) program to adult Chinese ELLs, improved students’ use of reading strategies and/or overall reading comprehension. Using a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group design, 207 adult Chinese ELLs from four classes were assigned to intervention or control groups. The intervention group utilized the ITSS to support their English reading instruction, whereas the control group was exposed to only traditional instruction. Our results indicate that the ITSS intervention had a statistically significant positive effect on adult Chinese ELLs’ reading comprehension ( β...

The effects of personal experience narrative writing on EFL learners’ narrative competence development
Hua Chen, Ying Wang (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: expresión escrita

Resumen:

Drawing upon the dialogic theory, this study investigated the effects of writing personal experience narratives (PENs) of critical events on English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ narrative competence development. The study collected a multiple source of data from 66 students at one Chinese university, including PENs of critical events, reflective journals, and semi-structured interviews. PENs were concerned with students’ critical events during the transitional periods of life from secondary to higher education, whereas reflective journals and interviews were used to gain students’ perceptions of narrative writing and narrative competence. Narrative competence was assessed via narrative writing performance, narrative coherence, and narrative cohesion. It was found that writing PENs over a period of two semesters aided EFL...

Measuring listening and speaking self-efficacy in EFL contexts: The development of the Communicative SE Questionnaire
Justin Harris (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

This article outlines the development of a 16-item instrument for measuring language learner’s foreign language self-efficacy (SE) concerning their speaking and listening skills through repeated administrations to groups of Japanese tertiary students. Responses were analysed through the Rasch model, which allows researchers to investigate unidimensionality of each proposed component, as well as the functioning of individual items. Logit scores from Rasch were used for a regression analysis of listening SE with listening proficiency test data, and a correlation study with speaking SE and speaking proficiency scores of a subset of participants. The results suggest that the two proposed components in the instrument are unidimensional and are able to differentiate between different levels of SE among participants. Also, there are low to...

Translanguaging through performance: Comparative repetition pedagogy in Arabic–English university EFL classrooms
Mohammed Alshaikhi (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

Spoken communication remains limited in many Arabic-speaking university English as a foreign language (EFL) settings, where accuracy often outweighs experimentation. This study examines comparative repetition pedagogy (CRP), a bilingual instructional framework developed by Alshaikhi, integrating drama, role play, and task-based reflection. A longitudinal mixed-methods design was implemented with 120 male English-major students in Saudi Arabia. Quantitative data were collected through a willingness to communicate questionnaire, and qualitative data included observations, reflection logs, bilingual adaptations, and two semi-structured teacher interviews. Findings indicate increased willingness to communicate and emerging rhetorical awareness, though these patterns should be interpreted cautiously within the study’s contextual and...

L2 learners’ self-regulated learning strategies and self-efficacy for writing achievement: A latent profile analysis
Jing Chen, Lawrence Jun Zhang, Xiaotong Chen (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: estrategias de aprendizaje

Resumen:

There is an increasing recognition that effective deployment of self-regulated learning (SRL) strategies is essential for the development of second/foreign language learners’ abilities to accomplish learning goals. Within models of SRL, a prerequisite for the active employment of SRL strategies is learners’ self-efficacy, which interacts with strategy use in all phases. In the domain of second language (L2) writing, previous research mainly adopted a variable-centred approach to investigate the relationship between SRL strategy use and self-efficacy whereas person-centred questions have largely been neglected. Performing latent profile analysis (LPA) with undergraduate students of English as a foreign language (EFL), we identified three SRL profiles that differed quantitatively concerning levels of self-efficacy. The efficacious self-...

Strategically Informed Machine Translation Post-Editing: Enhancing Translation Performance among Intermediate Chinese EFL Learners
Zhiying Li (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: traducción automática

Resumen:

Machine translation (MT) errors may be seen as a limitation, but it is precisely these imperfections that provide learners with valuable opportunities for error-driven practice through post-editing (PE), thus developing their language proficiency and, in turn, supporting translation performance. However, little is known about how machine translation post-editing (MTPE) benefits intermediate learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). This empirical study explores the role of strategically informed MTPE practices in supporting intermediate Chinese EFL learners’ linguistic and translation development. Participants completed human translation and MTPE tasks guided by PE strategies, followed by reflection on their edits. Text complexity analysis using Eng-Editor revealed that post-edited texts exhibited higher overall textual,...

Learner proficiency and EFL learning through task rehearsal and performance
Bao Trang Thi Nguyen, Jonathan Newton (2020)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enfoque por tareas

Resumen:

This study examined the impact of learner proficiency on the occurrence and resolution of language-related episodes (LREs) in rehearsal of interactive speaking tasks and on the subsequent use of language items from LREs during performance of the same tasks in front of the class. Forty-eight learners from six intact English as a foreign language (EFL) classes at a Vietnamese high school were divided into three proficiency groups, each consisting of eight dyads. Group 1 was higher proficiency (HH) dyads; Group 2 consisted of mixed proficiency dyads (HL) and Group 3 was lower proficiency (LL) dyads. All the pairs rehearsed and then consecutively performed a problem-solving task and a debate task in two separate classroom lessons. The total data included 48 rehearsals and 48 corresponding performances collected during normal classroom...

Empowering critical digital literacy in EFL: Teachers’ evaluation of didactic materials involving the recognition of presupposed information
Nicola Brocca, Viviana Masia, Davide Garassino (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: competencia digital

Resumen:

Texto completo

This article proposes the use of a textual analysis technique involving the recognition of linguistic implicitness to promote Critical Digital Literacy (CDL) in the English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom. The technique, called Implicit Content Extraction (ICE), allows for the detection and analysis of (non- bona fide ) presuppositions, thus enabling students to identify how much and what potentially manipulative information is being conveyed in a text. ICE has been tested on ready-to-use communicative materials. The materials were evaluated by EFL teachers ( N = 10) who participated in a semi-structured interview. The analysis shows a positive reception of the materials, which meet the...

Motivational intensity and self-perceived Chinese language proficiency: A moderated mediation model of L2 enjoyment and boredom
Xian Zhao, Guoxing Lan, Tianxu Chen (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación

Resumen:

Along with the evolution of positive psychology, research in noncognitive factors (e.g. enjoyment and boredom) has gradually flourished in second language (L2) education in recent years. However, previous studies have not examined how enjoyment, boredom, and motivational intensity concurrently predict the self-perceived L2 language proficiency (SPL2P) of younger L2 learners in the Chinese language learning context. To fill the gap, this study investigated 251 ( N = 251) L2 Chinese students from 13 elementary and secondary schools in New Zealand, a population that has scarcely been featured. Embracing the PROCESS macro software, the results of the moderated mediation model indicated that L2 motivational intensity significantly predicted SPL2P, and L2 enjoyment positively mediated the association between L2 motivational intensity and...

Resumen:

This study investigates patterns associated with the integration of video-based tasks within a flipped classroom model grounded in task-based language teaching (TBLT) in relation to English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ speaking fluency, accuracy, and engagement. TBLT emphasizes meaning-focused, real-world tasks that encourage authentic communication and learner autonomy. The study involved 50 Indonesian university students enrolled in an advanced speaking course. Over 6 weeks, participants engaged with TED Talk videos outside the classroom and completed structured in-class speaking tasks aligned with TBLT principles. Quantitative findings showed observable differences between pre- and post-participation assessments, with gains in fluency (+1.56) and accuracy (+1.36) based on CEFR-aligned assessments and paired-sample t -tests...
