Stretching AI's reach: Assessing an AI-driven feedback system for extended academic writing
Jim Lo, Christy Wong, Agnes Ng (2026)
Computers & Education: Artificial Intelligence
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

Texto completo

Advances in large language models (LLMs) enable timely and scalable writing evaluation. Previous research has shown that LLM-driven conversational systems, such as ChatGPT, can provide feedback on short essays. However, it is unclear whether AI can effectively evaluate more demanding genres. This study investigates a custom-built writing feedback system developed at a Hong Kong university that uses OpenAI's GPT-4 Turbo (0125-preview) to provide rubric-based feedback on a 1500-word academic report. Guided by a detailed, rubric-aligned prompt, the system generated 333 feedback items from 37 undergraduates, which were analysed for accuracy, tone, and inclusion of examples. The analysis showed...

Resumen:

Texto completo

The adoption of Generative AI (GenAI) and Large Language Models (LLMs) in healthcare education has accelerated rapidly since 2023, yet the evidence base for their use in Scenario-Based Learning (SBL) remains fragmented. This systematic review synthesises empirical research on GenAI applications across scenario-based, case-based, problem-based, and simulation-based learning in healthcare education. Following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, five databases were searched on 9 November 2025 for peer-reviewed studies published from January 2023 onwards. Of 1151 initial records, 23 studies met the inclusion criteria. Quality was assessed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). Thematic...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

Texto completo

Student engagement, widely recognised as a key determinant of learning outcomes, warrants greater attention to its antecedent mechanisms for effective learning design. As LLM-based chatbots (hereafter chatbot) are increasingly used to support student learning, understanding what drives student engagement in such environments becomes especially important. Guided by appraisal theory, this study proposes a theoretically grounded model of students' engagement in chatbot-supported learning. Unlike prior studies that focus on isolated antecedents, the model integrates learners’ capacity appraisals, including technology-related (GenAI competency) and task-related (academic self-efficacy)...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

Texto completo

This study examines the reliability and accuracy of large language models (LLMs) for automated classroom observation using the World Bank's TEACH Primary framework. As education systems increasingly explore AI-based tools to scale teacher feedback and professional development, empirical validation of these systems is critical. Using a corpus of 12 primary classroom videos, we compared 8618 AI-generated evaluations from eight LLM endpoints against consensus-based ratings from certified TEACH experts. To account for model stochasticity, each model produced 10 independent evaluations per video–element pair. Reliability was assessed using variability and inter-rater consistency indicators,...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

This empirical study examines the effectiveness of artificial intelligence-enhanced personalized language learning interventions—tailored content adaptation, self-paced progression, and targeted weakness intervention—on academic writing proficiency, vocabulary acquisition, and grammatical accuracy among 540 Chinese postgraduate learners of English as a foreign language. Utilizing a pretest–posttest randomized controlled design, participants were assigned to three experimental groups (each receiving a distinct artificial intelligence-driven intervention) or a control group (traditional instruction). Quantitative analyses (multivariate analysis of covariance/analysis of covariance) demonstrated significant improvements across all learning outcomes for artificial intelligence groups compared with controls ( p .001), with the most...

Humanizing English language teaching (ELT) materials: An emotional design framework
Jiaqi Diao, Shulin Yu (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: trabajo teórico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

Despite growing calls to humanize materials for English language teaching (ELT), the emotional dimension of materials design remains largely overlooked, limiting their potential to foster affective engagement and support emotionally rich learning experiences that contribute to learners’ holistic development. This article proposes an emotional design framework for ELT materials, which draws on Norman’s Emotional Design Theory and empirical findings of emotional design in multimedia learning, and is informed by research in ELT materials, language education and applied linguistics. The framework outlines three levels of emotional design: visceral, behavioral, and reflective, to guide the development of ELT materials that stimulate the senses, promote meaningful and interactive language learning, and encourage personal reflection. The Effectiveness of Multilingual Versus Monolingual Approaches to L2 Teaching and Learning: A Meta-Analysis of Learning Outcomes
Meixiu Zhang, Amanda Brown (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Temas: uso de la L1 en el aula

Resumen:

The debate on multilingual (codeswitching) versus monolingual (immersive, target-language only) approaches to second language (L2) teaching has received renewed attention in recent decades. Both approaches are employed in L2 teaching and learning, supported by competing philosophies regarding the need for maximal L2 input and the facilitative potential of first language (L1) inclusion. Given a growth in experimental research comparing the effectiveness in terms of learning outcomes of the two approaches in L2 classrooms, this meta-analysis study investigates the effects of multilingual versus monolingual approaches on outcomes as measured by language assessments and examines the variables (age, proficiency, learning context, target skill area, and procedure for learning) that moderate such effects. We conducted a comprehensive search...

When big ideas meet critical thinking in lesson study: Insights from a pre-service language teacher education course
Rui Yuan, Zhaoxuan Wang, Shuwen Liu (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: formación de profesores

Resumen:

This article reports a classroom-based inquiry in which a group of pre-service language teachers were guided to engage in a lesson study project focusing on the incorporation of the framework of big ideas into language teaching. Specifically, the study zooms in on the student teachers’ exercise and development of critical thinking (CT) through the lesson study process. Relying on data from semi-structured interviews and classroom artifacts, the findings reveal that the introduction of big ideas in lesson study served as a crucial knowledge base for the participants’ pedagogical sense-making, thus contributing to their CT. The process of lesson study, characterized by a progressive structure, tailored scaffolding, and constructive feedback, also facilitated their development of CT skills and dispositions, which in turn contributed to...

Resumen:

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into language education has transformed how learners manage and direct their learning processes. Despite the growing adoption of AI-assisted tools, empirical understanding of their psychological and behavioral impacts remains incomplete. This study investigated how engagement in AI-assisted language learning environments shapes learners’ self-regulation, autonomy, and self-directed learning behaviors. Drawing on self-determination theory and Zimmerman’s model of self-regulated learning, the research employed a quantitative design with data collected from 736 Chinese university students using validated questionnaires measuring AI engagement, self-regulation, self-directed learning, and learner autonomy. Structural equation modeling (SEM) and correlational analyses were conducted...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

Transferring collaborative writing (CW) activities from in-class paper-based to online cloud-mediated collaboration, this study examined the comparative effects of these two CW contexts on English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ macro- and micro-writing skills and motivation. For this purpose, a cohort ( N = 54) of senior EFL college students was selected (using criterion-based purposive sampling) and then randomly assigned to two groups: paper-based collaboration (PC, n = 27) and cloud-based collaboration (CC, n = 27). Using a mixed-method design, the study employed both quantitative (expository and argumentative writing tests, and a motivation questionnaire) and qualitative (group and self-evaluation forms and reflection sheets) methods for data collection and analysis. Consequently, one-way multivariate analysis of variance (...
