Resumen:

Texto completo en HTML

Although studied for decades by the research community, artificial intelligence (AI) in education has recently sparked much public debate with the wide-spread popularity of systems such as ChatGPT and DALL-E. Existing literature offers a wealth of research on design, deploying and evaluating AI-driven systems in education. However, the challenges related to the growing influence of AI in the society, calls for revisiting research foundations of AI in education in order to inform decision-making in policy and guide future research. This special issue of Computers & Education: Artificial Intelligence brings 11 papers that explore the theme of empowering learners for the age of AI...

Temporally-focused analytics of self-regulated learning: A systematic review of literature

Resumen:

We present a systematic literature review of data-driven self-regulated learning (SRL) that emphasises the methodological importance of temporality and sequence, as opposed to conventional statistical analysis. Researchers seem unanimous in their view of the importance of SRL in modern online and blended educational settings; this is borne out by number of reviews of literature on the subject. There has, as yet, been no systematic treatment of SRL in the context of its conceptualisation as a phenomenon that unfolds in sequences over time. To address this limitation, this review explores the corpus of work (n = 53) in which SRL and its related dimensions are analysed through the lenses of...

Reconceptualizing community of inquiry in the age of generative artificial intelligence

Resumen:

The Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework is widely used to guide and explain learning in online and blended environments. However, generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) challenges a key assumption in CoI research and practice: that indicators of presence can be attributed primarily to human learners, instructors, and their interactions. GenAI can produce fluent discourse that resembles strong cognitive, social, or teaching presence. Yet such discourse may not reflect learners' thinking, relationships, or regulatory intentions. To date, research often frames GenAI as a tool, a dialogic partner, or a possible fourth presence. These views, however, do not fully capture GenAI's pervasive...

Evaluating the capability of large language models in characterising relational feedback: A comparative analysis of prompting strategies

Metodología: estudio empírico

Resumen:

Relational feedback is increasingly recognised for its crucial role in enhancing student-instructor relationships and promoting the assimilation of feedback. Despite its significance, no studies have tried to develop automated methods to analyse written feedback for properties of relational feedback to promote its use at scale and assist feedback providers with their relational feedback practices. This automated analysis of relational feedback can be performed as a classification task. However, traditional machine and deep learning methods for text classification typically require extensive human labelling and pose a significant challenge for educators and researchers lacking machine...

Human-centred learning analytics and AI in education: A systematic literature review

The rapid expansion of Learning Analytics (LA) and Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED) offers new scalable, data-intensive systems but raises concerns about data privacy and agency. Excluding stakeholders—like students and teachers—from the design process can potentially lead to mistrust and inadequately aligned tools. Despite a shift towards human-centred design in recent LA and AIED research, there remain gaps in our understanding of the importance of human control, safety, reliability, and trustworthiness in the design and implementation of these systems. We conducted a systematic literature review to explore these concerns and gaps. We analysed 108 papers to provide insights...

Learning analytics has matured significantly since its early days. The field has rapidly grown in terms of the reputation of its publication venues, established a vibrant community, and has demonstrated an increasing impact on policy and practice. However, the boundaries of the field are still being explored by many researchers in a bid to determine what differentiates a contribution in learning analytics from contributions in related fields, which also center around data in education. In this paper, we propose that instead of emphasizing the examination of differences, a healthy development of the field should focus on collaboration and be informed by the developments in related fields....

Directive, metacognitive, or a blend of both? A comparison of AI-generated feedback types on student engagement, confidence, and outcomes

Resumen:

Effective feedback is a central component of successful student learning, with extensive research examining how best to implement it in educational settings. Increasingly, feedback is being generated by artificial intelligence (AI), offering scalable and adaptive responses. Two widely studied approaches are directive feedback, which gives explicit explanations and reduces cognitive load to speed up learning, and metacognitive feedback which prompts learners to reflect, track their progress, and develop self-regulated learning (SRL) skills. While both approaches have clear theoretical advantages, their comparative effects on engagement, confidence, and quality of work remain underexplored....

Teachers’ generative AI self-efficacy, valuing, and integration at work: Examining job resources and demands

Generative AI (genAI) tools have involved rapid and broad uptake since their wide release in late 2022, including among teachers. We investigated several factors that play a role in teachers’ motivation and engagement to harness genAI in teaching and learning. We examined contextual factors (in-school support to apply genAI, time pressure, disruptive student behavior) as predictors of motivation (genAI self-efficacy and genAI valuing) and, in turn, engagement (i.e., genAI integration in teaching-related work and student learning activities) over the course of one school term. Among 368 Australian primary and secondary school teachers, our findings revealed that genAI support was associated...

Educational data journeys: Where are we going, what are we taking and making for AI?

Resumen:

Educational systems generate huge quantities of digital data. Digital educational data is captured and used at all points -- from classrooms and schools, to the level of educational departments. As growing trends in ‘data-driven instruction’ suggest, all these data have great potential to support student, teacher and leadership practices, help guide work and learning decisions, and inform policy development. Moreover, an increasing focus is being placed on the development of artificial intelligence to automate and improve how data are used. Yet, stakeholder data practices remain invisible and little understood, which complicates how artificial intelligence can be embedded in this context....

Building AI companions that prioritise learning over performance

Resumen:

Generative AI, currently most visible in education through large language models (LLMs), is increasingly embedded in students’ everyday learning practices, supporting tasks such as writing, coding, reasoning, and analysis. Yet its educational value remains uncertain because systems designed to improve immediate task performance may also weaken the cognitive and metacognitive processes that support durable learning. This paper addresses this learning–performance paradox by asking how AI systems can be designed to support learning rather than merely produce better outputs. To address this, in this paper, we make three contributions. First, we synthesise current LLM-based study support with...
