Resumen:

This study explores how generative AI (GenAI) technologies are reshaping research and teaching practices at the university level. Drawing on Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) (Engeström, 1987), we examine the interrelated activity systems of teaching and research through the lens of GenAI as a “runaway object”, a concept describing technologies that evolve unpredictably, disrupt boundaries, and reconfigure roles, tools, and epistemic norms. Based on qualitative data from ten academics in a mathematics department at a Swedish university, the analysis identifies five dominant themes that characterize emerging changes across both activity systems: boundary fluidity, shifting objects,...

The rapid development of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools has given rise to a growing discussion of the potential challenges and benefits that the use of these technologies may present in the field of education. This study examines the acceptance of the use of GenAI tools for teaching and learning among primary and secondary school teachers in Hong Kong. It uses an extension of the technology acceptance model (TAM) with a modified framework that incorporates two key factors: self-efficacy and subjective norm. Data were collected from a sample of 367 primary and secondary school teachers in Hong Kong using questionnaires containing items for six constructs: self-efficacy,...

Resumen:

Artificial intelligence literacy is a concept that has been the focus of exhaustive research recently. However, there are very few psychometrically sound and thoroughly evaluated instruments that attempt to assess AI literacy in a valid way. Therefore, this study presents an item set to assess the AI literacy of non-experts. In the context of a Delphi expert study, 53 subject matter experts participated in three iterative questionnaire rounds to generate potential AI literacy items and assess their content validity. In addition, the experts made suggestions on how the items’ wording accuracy could be improved and evaluated the wording suggestions of the other experts. Of 47...

Resumen:

This study builds on the recent interest in AI adoption research in academic settings by highlighting the need for culturally sensitive AI educational tools. The study achieved this by demonstrating how cultural differences shape students' motivation and AI use. This study adopts a cross-country comparative analytical approach to explore postgraduate students’ motivation to continue using AI tools in the context of higher education. The study developed a theoretical model based on Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and Expectation Disconfirmation Theory (EDT) to explore how perceived competence, perceived relatedness and perceived autonomy influence the continuance use intention of AI tools in...

How do LLMs perform in the context of MCQs across different levels of thinking skills in a business education course at higher education? A comparison of ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot

Metodología: estudio empírico

Resumen:

Texto completo

This exploratory study investigates the performance of three widely-used and freely available large language models (LLMs)— ChatGPT (GPT-3.5 Turbo), Gemini, and Copilot—in answering multiple-choice questions (MCQs) categorized by cognitive complexity based on the revised Bloom's Taxonomy. Although MCQs offer a structured, efficient, and scalable method for evaluation, a gap exists in the literature on how LLMs handle varying cognitive levels, particularly in a business course at higher education. Understanding LLM performance in this context is crucial, as students increasingly use LLMs for searching answers but also to receive tailored and scaffolded responses for an interactive and...

Despite the advancement of Chatbot technology, little is known about its affordances for language learning, especially in the context of Malaysian higher education institutions. Adapting the Push-Pull Mooring-Habit (PPMH) theoretical framework, this mixed-methods study examined Malaysian university students' experience in using Chatbots for English language learning, focusing on four main aspects; Performance Expectancy, Effort Expectancy, Social Isolation and Covid-19 Fear. A total of 360 undergraduate students from three public universities in Malaysia completed the questionnaire after being engaged with chatbots for three months. Twenty of them were also interviewed for an in-depth...

Resumen:

Despite the growing importance of English oral communication skills, traditional language learning approaches show limited effectiveness in simultaneously addressing psychological barriers and speaking proficiency among college students. While previous studies have explored anxiety reduction or speaking enhancement separately, a significant gap exists in research examining integrated approaches that tackle Public Speaking Anxiety (PSA), Interview Anxiety, and English-speaking proficiency improvement simultaneously. This study investigated whether an AI-integrated VR oral training application could effectively address these interconnected challenges. A quasi-experimental design was employed...

Resumen:

Artificial intelligence chatbots recently caused a stir in the world by promising to transform education systems in a multitude of ways. To analyze pertinent publications in the SSCI journals, a systematic review was conducted for this study, which investigates the trends of chatbots in education studies, with a focus on English speaking skills. Despite the increasing use of AI-powered chatbots in education, limited research has explored how to develop the merits of AI-powered chatbots in English-speaking teaching or learning. The empirical evidence of chatbot applications from 24 research studies conducted in an English-speaking learning environment and published between 2017 and 2023 was...

Resumen:

The rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED), particularly with the emergence of generative AI, has intensified the need for rigorous, transparent, and pedagogically grounded research reporting. Although existing frameworks offer valuable guidance on ethical responsibility or technical disclosure, they may be complex, fragmented, or difficult to operationalize in empirical and experimental contexts. This paper proposes the TEP (Transparency-Ethics-Pedagogy)-AIED model, a streamlined three-dimensional framework integrating transparency, ethics, and pedagogy to guide the design and reporting of AIED studies. The model highlights clear disclosure of AI system...

Resumen:

Incorporating Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), especially Large Language Models (LLMs), into educational settings presents valuable opportunities to boost the efficiency of educators and enrich the learning experiences of students. A significant portion of the current use of LLMs by educators has involved using conversational user interfaces (CUIs), such as chat windows, for functions like generating educational materials or offering feedback to learners. The ability to engage in real-time conversations with LLMs, which can enhance educators' domain knowledge across various subjects, has been of high value. However, it also presents challenges to LLMs' widespread, ethical, and...
