Cues facilitate foreign language vocabulary learning from instructional videos: Behavioral and neural evidence
Zhongling Pi, Caixia Liu, Luchun Wang (2023)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario

Resumen:

Vocabulary learning is basic for mastering a foreign language. Many students learn foreign language (FL) vocabulary via instructional videos outside of traditional classrooms, as there is no limit to time or space. Cues (e.g. coloring, highlighting, arrows, and text) are design features in instructional videos that not only guide learners' attention, but also facilitate the organization and integration of information. However, little is known about how visual cues and text cues influence FL vocabulary learning from instructional videos. In Experiment 1, we tested the effects of synonym text cues presented before the instructional video and visual cues during the video. Effects were measured in terms of participants' judgments of learning and objective measures of learning performance (indicated by accuracy on immediate and delayed...

Incidental collocation learning from reading-while-listening and captioned TV viewing and predictors of learning gains
Duy Van Vu, Ann-Sophie Noreillie, Elke Peters (2023)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario

Resumen:

Although a number of previous studies have shown that TV viewing can lead to incidental vocabulary learning, most of them focused on single words. Little research has examined the effect of captioned TV viewing on incidental collocation learning compared with other modes of input. In addition, research on the factors that affect incidental collocation from different input modes is still relatively scarce and has produced inconclusive findings. To fill those research gaps, the present study investigates the effects of reading-while-listening and captioned TV viewing on incidental collocation learning and predictors of learning gains. Eighty Vietnamese English as a foreign language (EFL) learners were divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group encountered 24 target collocations in two stories in two...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario

Resumen:

Texto completo

While research suggests that vocabulary learning through task completion is more effective than direct instruction, the underlying cause of this advantage—whether task involvement load (IL) or time spent on tasks—remains unclear. Extending the work of Hill and Laufer (2003, International Review of Applied Linguistics in Language Teaching, 41, 87–106), this study examines the effects of IL and employs eye-tracking to investigate how time spent on tasks, target words, and context, as well as regressions to targets, influence incidental vocabulary acquisition. Seventy-three second-language (...

Vocabulario y enseñanza del español
Anna Rufat, Francisco Jiménez Calderón, Magdalena Abad Castelló (2026)
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: libro

How effective is second language incidental vocabulary learning? A meta-analysis
Stuart Webb, Takumi Uchihara, Akifumi Yanagisawa (2023)
Language Teaching
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario

Resumen:

Texto completo

There is a great deal of variation in gains found between studies of second language (L2) incidental vocabulary learning, as well as many factors that affect learning. This meta-analysis investigated the effects of exposure to L2 meaning-focused input on incidental vocabulary learning with an aim to clarify the proportional gains that occur through meaning-focused learning. Twenty-four primary studies were retrieved providing 29 different effect sizes and a total sample size of 2,771 participants (1,517 in experimental groups vs. 1,254 in control groups). Results...

Resumen:

Vocabulary is now well recognized as an important focus in language teaching and learning. Now in its third edition, this book provides an engaging, authoritative guide to the teaching and learning of vocabulary in another language. It contains descriptions of numerous vocabulary learning strategies, which are supported by reference to experimental research, case studies, and teaching experience. It also describes what vocabulary learners need to know to be effective language users. This new edition has been updated to incorporate the wealth of research that has come out of the past decade. It also includes a new chapter on out of-classroom learning, which explores the effect of the Internet and electronic resources on learning. This vital resource for all vocabulary researchers shows that by taking a systematic approach to vocabulary...

AI chatbot-assisted vocabulary learning: Relationships with self-regulation, motivation, and performance among Chinese private college students
Chun Hao, Wei Xu, Mengyao Hao (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario

Resumen:

This study empirically investigated the application of a large language-model-driven artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot in self-regulated vocabulary acquisition among Chinese private college students. An 8-week experiment comparing AI-chatbot-assisted and conventional self-regulated vocabulary learning demonstrated that AI chatbot assistance could significantly improve vocabulary performance both across and within groups. Results revealed that the use of AI chatbot not only improved learning outcomes directly through personalized, self-paced learning but also indirectly by enhancing vocabulary learning strategy use and satisfying basic psychological needs. Notably, metacognitive strategy use fully mediated the relationship between perceived autonomy and vocabulary performance. Moreover, perceived autonomy moderated the effect of the...

LexPro: A plurilingual lexical profiling tool to assist teachers and researchers in analysing vocabulary of L2 input
Amaury Van Parys, Vanessa De Wilde, Maribel Montero Pérez (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: trabajo teórico

Temas: tecnología educativa

Resumen:

Given the strong influence of vocabulary knowledge on L2 learners’ text comprehension (Schmitt et al., 2011), assessing the vocabulary demands of foreign language (L2) input is a crucial challenge for both L2 educators and researchers. To do so, a well-established step for the design, selection, and empirical analysis of L2 input is to use tools for lexical profiling. This involves categorising a text’s vocabulary across levels in a word frequency list to estimate the vocabulary knowledge learners need in order to achieve satisfactory comprehension. However, current tools are mainly available for English and are built on word family-based frequency lists derived from broad corpora, which have been suggested to have more limited predictive power of learner knowledge than previously presumed (Schmitt et al., 2021). This article presents...

Does writing words in notes contribute to vocabulary learning?
Zhouhan Jin, Stuart Webb (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario

Resumen:

Texto completo

There has been little research investigating the effects of notetaking on foreign language (FL) learning, and no studies have examined how it affects vocabulary learning. The present study investigated the vocabulary written in notes of 86 students after they had listened to a teacher in an English as a foreign language (EFL) class. The results showed that 51.2% of participants took notes, and 32.6% wrote information about target words in notes. However, there were only 95 instances of information written about the 28 target words. The results revealed that the odds of vocabulary learning were 15 and 10 times higher in the...

L2 Spanish vocabulary teaching in US universities: Instructors’ beliefs and reported practices
Claudia Helena Sanchez-Gutierrez, Pablo Robles García, Mercedes Pérez Serrano (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: creencias y actitudes de los profesores

Resumen:

Texto completo

Studies on teachers’ beliefs about vocabulary learning and teaching have focused, so far, on English as a second language (L2), or foreign language (FL), in different contexts but little attention has been given to other L2s and FLs. In this study, 15 Spanish L2 instructors at large universities were interviewed in order to better understand where they stand when it comes to (1) the importance they give to vocabulary, as compared to grammar, in their classes, (2) how they decide which words to teach, and (3) how they assess students’ word knowledge. These interviews were subsequently analysed following...
