Functions of oral monologic tasks: Effects of topic familiarity on L2 speaking performance
Xuyan Qiu (2020)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enfoque por tareas

Resumen:

Tasks with different design factors may dissimilarly affect oral production, and thus can be adopted for different pedagogical purposes. However, the functions of task types are not fully explored. To address this gap, this study investigates the influence of content familiarity and task repetition on sixty English as a foreign language learners’ speaking performance, in terms of complexity, accuracy, and fluency (CAF). Participants twice performed four monologic tasks, and received stimulated recall interviews. The findings indicate that participants produced structurally more complex speech under familiar conditions, and increased their CAF in task repetition. Furthermore, content familiarity and task repetition may facilitate conceptualization. Task repetition may also direct participants’ attention towards lexical choices and...

Can teacher feedback dispel the shadow of test anxiety over English achievement? The Dual-Mode Hypothesis
Yuyang Cai (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

Test anxiety restricts learning achievement. Therefore, attention has been paid to individual factors (e.g. self-concept, strategic competence) that can help students reduce the detrimental effects of these factors on learning achievement. This focus leaves external variables such as teacher feedback underexplored. The current study examined whether teacher feedback has the potential to reduce the level of test anxiety and weaken its detrimental effect on students’ English achievement. This cross-sectional study involved 535 12th graders ( M age = 17.97, SD = .60, females = 54%) from a middle school in China. Two questionnaires were delivered to measure students’ test anxiety and perceived teacher feedback. Students’ English achievement was indicated with an in-house English exam. Data were analysed using structural equation modeling...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

Self-regulated reading-to-write (R2W) can be portrayed as learners’ proactive learning of useful elements (e.g. content, rhetorical features, and conventions) from reading by using strategies, which is an effective mechanism connecting reading and writing, to improve their writing competence. In the present study, six major types of self-regulated R2W strategies, i.e. mining reading, writerly reading, cognitive strategies, purposive reading, recalling while writing, and peer revision reading that can contribute to writing competence were included in the proposed self-regulated R2W framework. Importantly, a self-regulated R2W scale was established to understand the impacts of four types of strategies. Participants were 458 primary students (9 to 13 years old, M = 10.12, SD = .62) in Hong Kong. They completed the self-regulated R2W...

Translanguaging through performance: Comparative repetition pedagogy in Arabic–English university EFL classrooms
Mohammed Alshaikhi (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

Spoken communication remains limited in many Arabic-speaking university English as a foreign language (EFL) settings, where accuracy often outweighs experimentation. This study examines comparative repetition pedagogy (CRP), a bilingual instructional framework developed by Alshaikhi, integrating drama, role play, and task-based reflection. A longitudinal mixed-methods design was implemented with 120 male English-major students in Saudi Arabia. Quantitative data were collected through a willingness to communicate questionnaire, and qualitative data included observations, reflection logs, bilingual adaptations, and two semi-structured teacher interviews. Findings indicate increased willingness to communicate and emerging rhetorical awareness, though these patterns should be interpreted cautiously within the study’s contextual and...

Resumen:

We investigated the effectiveness of two different teaching methods based on two different theoretical views of how languages are learned in oral proficiency after three years of L2 French instruction. The first method is commonly used in the Netherlands and is in line with structure-based (SB) principles, viewing language as a set of grammar rules that need to be explained to achieve accuracy, usually in the L1. The second method aligns with dynamic-usage-based (DUB) principles in that language is viewed as a set of conventionalized routines that are learned through frequent exposure and the L2 is spoken exclusively in class. In a large study (Rousse-Malpat et al., 2019), the DUB method proved...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: realidad virtual

Resumen:

Many learners of English as a foreign language struggle to develop second language speaking fluency because of limited opportunities for authentic communication with linguistically diverse English users in English as a multilingua franca context. This study aims to address this problem by investigating the effects of communication strategy instruction, an approach believed to facilitate communication in English as a multilingua franca contexts. This study compared two approaches of communication strategy instruction, explicit and implicit, combined with low-immersion virtual reality. Over 11 weeks, 159 Vietnamese undergraduates were randomly assigned to one of three instructional conditions: Explicit + virtual reality, Explicit + non-virtual reality, and virtual reality Implicit. Data sources were video recordings of pre-, post-, and...

Resumen:

In this article, we address collegiality among students and teachers and its potential for promoting meaningful experiences in teaching-learning processes. We analyse episodes drawn from the pedagogical practices of two of the authors of this text, who have taught English (Episode 1) and Portuguese (Episode 2). These episodes took place in two Brazilian public sector schools located in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Throughout our discussion, as Brazilian teacher-researchers, we align ourselves with studies on teaching-learning and language teacher education developed by the Exploratory Practice Group of Rio de Janeiro, with studies on autoethnography, as well as with the theoretical-analytical tools of narrative studies. As a result, we found that teaching proposals that encourage collaboration between students and teachers can promote...

Motivational Trajectories of Chinese Secondary School EFL Learners: Understanding Demotivation and Remotivation Through a Bioecological Lens
Xuejun Ye, Qianyi Chen, Tianyuan Zhu (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación

Resumen:

Texto completo

This study drew on bioecological systems theory to investigate factors influencing demotivation and remotivation among Chinese secondary school EFL learners. Adopting a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, 129 Grade-12 students were asked to create motivational change graphs to depict their English learning trajectories during their 12-year pre-tertiary education. Analysis of the graphs revealed two distinct groups: those who remained demotivated and those who experienced remotivation. To explore underlying factors, narrative frames and follow-up interviews were conducted with selected participants. Quantitative results indicated two critical periods of motivational change: Grade 8, when...

Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enfoque por tareas

Resumen:

This study investigates the effects of two task factors (i.e. task complexity and task sequence) and an interlocutor factor (i.e. interlocutor familiarity) on Chinese English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ self-repair strategies during synchronous online task-based interaction. Four decision-making tasks were conducted to elicit oral interactions from 44 low-level proficiency EFL learners, who were required to complete the tasks in pairs in either a simple-to-complex sequence or a complex-to-simple sequence. Information about the learners’ familiarity with their partners was collected through interviews. Learners’ self-repair was analysed in terms of various recycling and replacement strategies. The results revealed that complex tasks facilitated learners in replacing items to solve problems, while the simple-to-complex task...

Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: aula invertida/flipped learning

Resumen:

The Covid-19 pandemic required a transformation into innovative classroom pedagogies that expected language learners to become more active and shoulder more responsibilities than before. In this article, I report on my first experience of doing exploratory practice to examine online flipped classrooms used to develop English as a foreign language (EFL) students’ self-directed learning. In a classroom-based mixed-methods study, I examined and puzzled over classroom practices that may promote learners’ self-directed readiness in the context of a university-level writing class. The results indicated a significant increase in my students’ desire for learning and self-control. They also showed that learners need technical assistance and psychological support to increase their self-directed learning skills and become more self-directed and...
