The interplay of oral corrective feedback and L2 willingness to communicate across proficiency levels
Mostafa Zare, Zohreh Gooniband Shooshtari, Alireza Jalilifar (2022)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

This study aims to explore the impact of oral corrective feedback types on English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ willingness to communicate across proficiency levels. It also investigates how EFL learners view different types of feedback in relation to their willingness to communicate. Sixty Iranian EFL learners were tracked in four proficiency levels. Initially, the participants filled in a questionnaire to measure their attitudes to oral CF and their willingness to communicate. Subsequent to the teachers’ employment of explicit correction, recasts, and prompts, the learners’ willingness to communicate was measured anew. A semi-structured interview was also conducted. The results revealed learners’ high preference for prompts. A two-way mixed between-within ANOVA demonstrated a significant effect for both oral corrective...

Developing and validating a well-being scale for foreign language learners

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

With the growing emphasis on positive psychology, the well-being of foreign language (FL) learners has become a key area of focus. However, existing well-being scales are typically designed for the general population, and a scale specifically tailored to the unique experiences and challenges faced by FL learners is still lacking. To address this gap, the present study aimed to develop and validate a well-being scale specifically tailored for FL learners. Using a mixed-methods design, the study involved 1,182 secondary school students in China, with an average age of 14.14 years ( SD = 1.21) and spanning grades 7–12. Grounded in the positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment well-being model, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis confirmed an 18-item FL learner well-being scale. This five-factor...

Examining how L2MSS motivation and international posture manifest in a drama-based pedagogical course at a private university in China

Resumen:

Texto completo

Drama-based pedagogy (DBP) has been proposed as a way to enhance learner engagement, performance, and motivation, particularly in contexts where opportunities to practice English are limited, such as the context of this study: a small, private college in a second-tier Chinese city. This study employed a mixed methods concurrent case study design to investigate DBP’s benefits, challenges, and relationship to motivation. Quantitative data were collected through a motivational questionnaire based on the second language motivational self system (L2MSS) and international posture (IP) models, administered to 31 participants after a semester-long DBP course. Qualitative data were gathered through...

Online journaling and language learning in intensive summer study abroad programs
Theresa Schenker (2024)

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: study abroad/estudios en el extranjero

Resumen:

In spite of the superior effects of semester- or year-long educational experiences abroad, the majority of students prefers short-term study abroad for which participation numbers are steadily rising. Due to the increased student interest in short-term study abroad options, investigations into how a short stay abroad can be designed to maximize learning outcomes for participants are important. While some studies suggest that technology can have negative impacts on language learning during study abroad, effective inclusion of technology can maximize learning. This article summarizes the results of three years of research investigating the effects of daily online journaling during an intensive German summer program on second language (L2) learners’ writing skills during an intensive German summer program. The context of the program will...

Strategically Informed Machine Translation Post-Editing: Enhancing Translation Performance among Intermediate Chinese EFL Learners
Zhiying Li (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: traducción automática

Resumen:

Machine translation (MT) errors may be seen as a limitation, but it is precisely these imperfections that provide learners with valuable opportunities for error-driven practice through post-editing (PE), thus developing their language proficiency and, in turn, supporting translation performance. However, little is known about how machine translation post-editing (MTPE) benefits intermediate learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). This empirical study explores the role of strategically informed MTPE practices in supporting intermediate Chinese EFL learners’ linguistic and translation development. Participants completed human translation and MTPE tasks guided by PE strategies, followed by reflection on their edits. Text complexity analysis using Eng-Editor revealed that post-edited texts exhibited higher overall textual,...

Long-term effects of exploratory practice on language learners

Practitioner research plays a crucial role in education because of its applied nature and its ability to address pertinent issues within learning and teaching contexts. Exploratory practice (EP) is a form of practitioner research that emphasizes puzzles while striving to understand and improve students’ and teachers’ quality of life in the language classroom. Our puzzlement as EP practitioners began to take shape as we received a variety of feedback – both positive and negative – on our EP-infused lessons from our past students. Therefore, we started to ponder the enduring repercussions of an EP experience on participants’ subsequent learning and quality of life, extending beyond the immediate...

Empowering critical digital literacy in EFL: Teachers’ evaluation of didactic materials involving the recognition of presupposed information
Nicola Brocca, Viviana Masia, Davide Garassino (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: competencia digital

Resumen:

Texto completo

This article proposes the use of a textual analysis technique involving the recognition of linguistic implicitness to promote Critical Digital Literacy (CDL) in the English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom. The technique, called Implicit Content Extraction (ICE), allows for the detection and analysis of (non- bona fide ) presuppositions, thus enabling students to identify how much and what potentially manipulative information is being conveyed in a text. ICE has been tested on ready-to-use communicative materials. The materials were evaluated by EFL teachers ( N = 10) who participated in a semi-structured interview. The analysis shows a positive reception of the materials, which meet the...

Learners’ enjoyment in mobile task-based language learning: a longitudinal study on novice CFL learners in an Australian university
Xiaoji Wang, Wenying Jiang (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

Texto completo

Foreign language enjoyment (FLE) is one of the crucial positive emotions shown by language learners. Those experiencing FLE are usually intrinsically motivated and highly engaged. However, research on foreign language learners’ FLE has not been extensively conducted in a mobile learning setting. Less is known on how and to what extent learning activities are related to FLE. To address this gap, this study designed a mobile-assisted language learning task and investigated novice Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) learners’ FLE level at different stages of the task. Based on two rounds of questionnaire survey and an email reflection, the respondents revealed a surprisingly high FLE level in three...

Genre instruction, textual borrowing, and foreign language writing: Graduate teaching assistant perspectives and practices
Heather Willis Allen, Kate Paesani (2022)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

Although writing plays a significant role in communication, 21st century literacies and academic foreign language learning, little research has investigated approaches to and instructional practices of writing in foreign language (FL) contexts. To address this gap, the current study explores how postsecondary FL teachers conceptualize writing instruction and apply their conceptual knowledge in the classroom. Using a sociocultural theory perspective, this qualitative study focuses on genre-based writing instruction and the teaching of textual borrowing among three graduate teaching assistants in a lower-level French as a FL course. Findings, based on analysis of classroom observations, teaching materials, and interviews, demonstrate that participants’ conceptualizations and implementation of textual borrowing were emergent, variable,...
