Emotions are crucial predictors for students’ performance and achievement during second language learning, so it is necessary to acquire knowledge about their antecedents. Based on the control-value theory and self-determination theory, this study investigates how teacher provided autonomy support and structure influence students’ emotions through the mediation of self-efficacy. A total of 754 college students in their first or second year from a Chinese university completed the validated questionnaires measuring perceived autonomy support and structure in English class, self-efficacy and academic emotions (enjoyment, pride, anxiety and boredom). Hypothesized relations among the constructs were analysed using structural equation modeling. Results indicate that autonomy support has direct effects on anxiety and boredom, while structure...

Resumen:
Effective learning strategies have been proven to be advantageous to lower learners’ foreign language anxiety (FLA) and improve their language proficiency. However, many studies have devoted to students’ learning strategies but ignored the important role of teachers in reducing FLA. In addition, the effectiveness of the FLA-reducing strategies proposed by these studies has rarely been verified in natural classroom environment. The present study was conducted to explore the systematic effects of the teaching strategies on FLA after constructing a 34-item observation instrument Teaching Strategies Intervention Scale (TSIS), and investigated the changes of 306 English as a foreign language (EFL) graduate students’ English learning anxiety levels influenced by the anxiety-reducing teaching strategies in China. Results showed that the...

Resumen:
Teachers’ beliefs play a critical role in shaping how AI tools are interpreted and used in instruction, yet these beliefs have rarely been systematically assessed in university language teaching. This study aims to develop and validate a measurement instrument for assessing teachers’ beliefs about AI-assisted instruction, grounded in the Intelligent-Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge framework. A sequential, two-wave quantitative design was employed, with data from 508 teachers used for exploratory factor analysis (EFA), followed by confirmatory validation using an independent sample of 487 teachers. Data analyses were conducted using SPSS for EFA, AMOS for confirmatory factor analysis and Mplus for measurement invariance testing. The results supported a reliable five-factor belief structure: AI knowledge beliefs, AI...

Resumen:
The ability to read in a second language (L2) for academic purposes is essential for higher education students. Dutch colleges increasingly use materials in English or teach in English. This can be challenging for L2 readers, especially students entering higher education from vocational studies, who may have less experience with L2 academic reading. Teaching L2 reading programmes containing explicit instruction of reading strategies may benefit higher education students in L2 academic reading, particularly since reading strategies learned in the first language (L1) may not transfer to the L2. In this 7-week L2 reading strategy intervention, 801 first-year polytechnic students learned to use seven...

Resumen:
Although research on flipped learning continues to explore ways to enhance its effectiveness, little attention has been paid to its combinations with other instructional approaches to improve alignment with diverse educational and learner needs. This study investigated the effects of the proposed Flipping Content and Language Integrated Learning approach in Asian tertiary education contexts. A quasi-experimental pilot study involved a group of low-achieving university students who learned with the Flipping Content and Language Integrated Learning approach over an academic term (i.e., a 26-week treatment period). Employing a repeated measures design, the study collected data through learning...

Temas: telecolaboración e intercambios virtuales
Resumen:
This article investigates how engaging students to discuss topics that reflect their ideologies in lingua franca (LF) virtual exchanges can help facilitate global citizenship development. A six-week virtual exchange is explored with students from universities in Mexico, Poland, Spain, and the USA. This study utilizes five key elements of CALL-related tasks and three categories of telecollaborative tasks in order to promote students’ global citizenship, defined as awareness, caring, and embracing cultural diversity while promoting social justice and sustainability, coupled with a sense of responsibility to act. During the exchange, 55 participants, registered for foreign language courses (English or Spanish) or for a content area course (such as business and pedagogy) taught in English, met weekly in groups via Zoom video conferencing...

Resumen:
Evidence from recent studies has shown that sustained perseverance and passion for long-term goals in the domain of second language (L2) learning – a personality trait called L2 grit – is associated with various aspects of language learning, including positive psychological attributes (e.g. motivation, beliefs, and emotions), actions (e.g. learning efforts and strategy use), and achievement (e.g. course and task performance). Meanwhile, relatively little has been written about the mechanism through which such relationships emerge. Expanding upon L2 grit’s association with self-regulated learning (SRL) behaviors and SRL-related psychological variables, this study explores the development of L2...
