Resumen:
The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies has been notable in supporting English as an Additional Language (EAL) learners, particularly in offering interactive assessments. AI-driven dialogue systems that produce culturally relevant humor and empathy, bridging the native language (L1) and the target language (L2), have been employed to engage EAL learners more effectively and boost their learning results. However, there's a noticeable gap in research concerning the fusion of humor, empathy, and intercultural dimensions in language learning. Intercultural dimensions encompass acquiring crucial knowledge, communication skills, and the values essential for meaningful interactions...

Resumen:
Artificial intelligence (AI) agents are rapidly reshaping the landscape of computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL), presenting both new opportunities and challenges for educators and learners. Despite their increasing prevalence, there remains a lack of comprehensive, theory-informed synthesis regarding the roles and impacts of AI agents within CSCL. This systematic literature review analyses 46 empirical studies published between 2014 and 2025, with the aim of clarifying the methodological and contextual characteristics of the field, the pedagogical and technological features of AI-mediated CSCL environments, the instructional and mediational functions of AI agents, and the...

Resumen:
Despite the advancement of Chatbot technology, little is known about its affordances for language learning, especially in the context of Malaysian higher education institutions. Adapting the Push-Pull Mooring-Habit (PPMH) theoretical framework, this mixed-methods study examined Malaysian university students' experience in using Chatbots for English language learning, focusing on four main aspects; Performance Expectancy, Effort Expectancy, Social Isolation and Covid-19 Fear. A total of 360 undergraduate students from three public universities in Malaysia completed the questionnaire after being engaged with chatbots for three months. Twenty of them were also interviewed for an in-depth...

Resumen:
Emerging discussions have boomed in relation to recent trends and applications of generative artificial intelligence in education, but few attention were paid to AI chatbots in terms of critical thinking ability and second language (L2) writing self-efficacy. To address such research gap, this study aims to delve into effectiveness of AI chatbot-integrated writing tasks on critical thinking ability and writing self-efficacy among vocational college students. Followed the quasi-experiment design, this study recruited 80 first-year vocational college students from two intact class. Throughout seven-week's instruction, quantitative data were collected with pre- and post-questionnaires of...

Resumen:
This review analyzed the trends in conversational AI tools in ELT from January 2013 to November 2023. The study examined 32 papers, focusing on publication trends, tool types, research methods, learning outcomes, and factors influencing their use. Findings revealed a gradual increase in publications, with 4 (12%) from 2013 to 2021, 13 (41%) in 2022, and 15 (47%) in 2023. All studies (100%) were conducted in Asian EFL contexts. Among the AI chatbots, Google Assistant (25%) was the most widely used. Quasi-experimental (45%) and cross-section (41%) research designs were commonly employed. Mixed-method (50%) approaches were prevalent for data collection and analysis. Conversational AI yielded...

Resumen:
Educational technology research has found that parents of young children widely share concerns about extended screen time, lack of physical activity, and lack of social interaction. Kid Space was developed to address these concerns by enabling multi-modal and immersive collaborative play-based learning. Kid Space utilizes multiple sensing technologies with an immersive physical space through a human-scale wall projection and incorporates a conversational AI agent to interact with children, understand individual progress, and personalize learning experiences in a blended physical and digital environment. To evaluate Kid Space in the wild, we conducted a multi-method user study involving a...

Resumen:
This study investigates the effectiveness, affordances, limitations, and family perceptions of conversational AI for home literacy learning vs. human. We developed a large language model (LLM)-powered conversational AI system, named Vovo, to teach children vocabulary and co-construct stories using structured literacy pedagogy. The system was tested in home environments over six weeks with 10 families and their children aged 3–7 (M = 5.4). Across 150 learning sessions, Vovo delivered structured literacy instruction as effectively as parents, though children achieved higher learning outcomes when learning with parents. Video analysis revealed Vovo's advantages in pedagogical consistency,...

Resumen:
Conversational agents such as chatbots have recently gained a lot of traction in various industries, including education, marketing, and healthcare. In K–12 and higher education, conversational agents have been used to boost student learning and motivation. Recently, new applications of conversational agents, such as conversation-based assessments, have emerged in the context of educational assessments. Such applications aim to enhance students' assessment experiences through the use of conversational agents in administering items (or tasks) and providing feedback to students. To discuss the utility of conversational agents in assessments, this paper puts a special emphasis on test-...

Resumen:
Access to AI-driven chatbots is triggering schools to transform. Easy access and questions of cheating are balanced against potential upsides of individual support, time savings, and the risk of falling behind. Therefore, insights into teachers’ AI self-efficacy and attitudes towards the integration of AI-driven chatbots in education necessitate research. This study approaches teachers' readiness to use AI-driven chatbots. A survey and poll questions were administered, yielding 312 and 406 responses respectively, focusing on AI self-efficacy, attitudes, and perceived usefulness in education. Preliminary findings show that while teachers are generally positive about the potential of AI in...

Resumen:
The present study investigates the effectiveness of a GenAI-based chatbot, “Reading Bot,” in reducing foreign language reading anxiety (FLRA) and improving foreign language reading performance (FLRP) among Chinese secondary school students learning English as a foreign language (EFL). To do so, a mixed-methods quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test design with qualitative interviews was employed. After ensuring homogeneity between the two groups, one class was designated as the experimental group (n = 42), utilizing a chatbot as a treatment, while the other class served as the comparison group (n = 42), receiving traditional teacher support. Both groups participated in five 45-min reading...
