Learner agency and potential for creativity in writing task design and Chinese EFL students’ flow experiences in writing: A contextual perspective
Qiaoxia Wu, Ágnes Albert (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enfoque por tareas

Resumen:

Ensuring learner agency and potential for creativity in task design are likely to elicit different flow experiences among learners, either facilitating or impeding their task engagement and oral or written performance in foreign language learning contexts. However, so far little attention has been paid to the role of these factors in learners’ flow experiences in task-based second language (L2) writing. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between different task conditions operationalized as a teacher-generated content task (TGT), a learner-generated content task (LGT), and a creative task (CT), and learners’ flow experiences by utilizing Czimmermann and Piniel’s adaptation of Egbert’s flow questionnaire. Moreover, the study also examined the possible role that study contexts might play in students’ flow experiences in...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario

Resumen:

This study investigates the effectiveness of multisensory learning (MSL) compared to traditional (TRD) teaching methods in enhancing English vocabulary acquisition among English as a foreign language (EFL) kindergarten-aged learners in Amman, Jordan. A total of 49 children were divided equally into two groups: one receiving traditional instruction and the other exposed to multisensory techniques, including visual aids, auditory input, specific activities, and experiences. Pre- and post-tests were used to assess vocabulary retrieval through two tasks. Descriptive statistics revealed that the MSL group outperformed the TRD group in both tasks, with higher mean scores and reduced variability, indicating more consistent learning outcomes. An independent sample t -test confirmed that these differences were statistically significant. The...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: evaluación

Resumen:

The current study explores the impact of varying multiple-choice question preview and presentation formats in a test of second language listening proficiency targeting different levels of text comprehension. In a between-participant design, participants completed a 30-item test of listening comprehension featuring implicit and explicit information comprehension questions under one of four multiple-choice question preview and presentation conditions. Interactions between preview, presentation and comprehension in the participants’ test scores were analysed using many facet Rasch analysis. The results suggest that the measurement of participants’ listening ability was directly influenced by the presentation of multiple-choice questions. Test scores were highest when participants were able to preview the multiple-choice question stems...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: andamiaje/scaffolding

Resumen:

Regarding the three main features of scaffolding, namely, contingency, fading, and the transfer of responsibility, contingency entails the assistance adjusted to a learner’s existing level of understanding. The present study investigated the effect of the model of contingent teaching on improving Iranian English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ overall writing performance (opinion essays), and in terms of writing components; namely, task response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy. Moreover, the study aimed at investigating which component was mostly affected by the model. Based on convenience sampling, 60 female EFL learners of English in a language school between the ages of 20 and 30 were chosen from four intact classes. After conducting the Oxford placement test to ensure the...

Generative AI in EFL writing instruction for lower-intermediate learners: Do perceived affective gains translate to improved performance?
Yi Chen, Jia Chen (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

This mixed-methods study examined the impact of integrating generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) into English as a foreign language (EFL) writing classes on students’ writing performance and affective responses. Nearly 100 Chinese students from four parallel International English Language Testing System (IELTS) writing classes in a university foundation program participated in a 9-week trial, with half assigned to an experimental group and half to a control group. Both groups received theme-based instructions on IELTS Writing Task 2 through a three-stage writing process, while the experimental group also engaged with Kimi , a widely used GenAI chatbot in China, during and after class. Unlike previous studies, this research targeted lower-intermediate learners and aimed to offer a more nuanced understanding of GenAI’s role by...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

The contribution of self-regulated learning (SRL) strategies to second language (L2) education has recently garnered significant attention in various contexts. However, the way these strategies interact with task engagement in the domain of specific language skills such as L2 writing has been overlooked. To fill this gap, this study employed an experimental–comparison group, pretest–posttest design, conducted within a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design, to investigate whether and how SRL strategies-based writing instruction of English argumentative essays affected L2 learners’ task engagement in the short and long term. The intervention and control intervention consisted of a 14-session instructional program on writing English argumentative essays. The intervention was enhanced with an SRL strategies-based instruction based...

The effects of different task sequences on novice L2 learners’ oral performance in the classroom
Nayoung Kim (2023)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: adquisición de segundas lenguas

Resumen:

This study investigated the optimum task sequence for second language (L2) novice learners of English. One set of task sequences was manipulated using a deductive and theoretical SSARC (simplify–stabilize–automatize–restructure–complexify) model, and two sets of task sequences were manipulated based on a teacher’s inductive classroom observations. A total of 76 undergraduates at a private university in Korea were divided into three groups for the task sequences: task complexity (TC), guided planning with vocabulary (GPV), and guided planning with content (GPC). While the four oral tasks were sequenced according to the resource-directing dimensions [± elements] and [± reasoning] in all three groups, the TC group received pretask planning, the GPV group received teacher-led guided planning with words, and the GPC group received teacher-...

Task repetition and corrective feedback via models and direct corrections among young EFL writers: Draft quality and task motivation
Hanne Roothooft, Amparo Lázaro-Ibarrola, Bram Bulté (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación

Resumen:

Second language (L2) writing research has demonstrated that young learners discuss linguistic issues, make use of feedback, and show a generally positive disposition toward writing tasks. However, many issues deserve further investigation. Regarding task implementation, few studies have been conducted with young learners writing individually, and few have compared different feedback types. Also, the focus of analysis has mostly been placed on students’ discussions; little is known about aspects such as draft quality and task motivation. To address these gaps, draft quality and task motivation were measured in 75 learners (aged 10–12 years) engaged in a three-stage writing task. They were divided into a task repetition group (n = 21), a group that received feedback via direct corrections (n = 30), and a group that received feedback via...

The effects of written corrective feedback on the accuracy of L2 writing: Comparing collaborative and individual revision behavior
YouJin Kim, Lena Emeliyanova (2021)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación

Resumen:

Although the effects of different types of written corrective feedback (WCF) have been examined in great detail, learners’ revision behavior in response to WCF has not been systematically investigated. The current study compared students’ classroom revision behaviors when they worked in pairs and when they worked individually. It further compared the effects of students’ collaborative and individual revision of teachers’ indirect WCF on accuracy development in their subsequent writing. A total of 36 learners of English as a second language (ESL) completed four timed essays over an 8-week academic session. The instructor provided indirect WCF on students’ essays, and the students revised their writing either individually (the self-correction group) or in pairs (the pair-correction group). The students’ revision behavior was analysed in...
