How students’ self-assessment behavior affects their online learning performance
Albert C.M. Yang, Irene Y.L. Chen, Brendan Flanagan (2022)
Computers & Education: Artificial Intelligence
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

Texto completo

Previous studies have found that the frequency and the regularity of taking the self-assessment are positively correlated with learning performance. However, as artificial intelligence is widely used for self-assessment in various educational contexts, numerous behaviors have been identified, including nonstandard behaviors that can negatively impact learning. Therefore, more analysis regarding students' self-assessment behaviors in different contexts and their influence on learning is required. In this study, we examined students’ behaviors in online self-assessment task and how it affects their learning performance. A 6-week experiment was conducted in an accounting course. Students were...

The accessibility of advanced Artificial Intelligence-based tools, like ChatGPT, has made Large Language Models (LLMs) readily available to students. These LLMs can generate original written content to assist students in their academic assessments. With the rapid adoption of LLMs, exemplified by the popularity of OpenAI's ChatGPT, there is a growing need to explore their application in education. Few studies examine students' use of LLMs as learning tools. This paper focuses on the application of ChatGPT in engineering higher education through an in-depth case study. It investigates whether engineering students can generate high-quality university essays with LLMs assistance, whether...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

Texto completo

The rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI) has sparked debate in education about whether to ban AI tools for assessments. This study explores the adoption and impact of AI tools on an undergraduate research proposal assignment using a mixed-methods approach. From a sample of 187 students, 69 completed a survey, with 46 (67%) reporting the use of AI tools. AI-using students were significantly more likely to be higher-performing, with a pre-semester average GPA of 5.46 compared to 4.92 for non-users (7-point scale, p = .025). Most students used AI assistance for the highest-weighted components of the task, such as the research topic and methods section, using AI primarily for...

Purpose: this study aims to present an innovative approach (Diffusion of Innovation Theory) to investigate the adoption of ChatGPT by business and management students. The theory emphasizes integrating the variables Viz. relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, observability, attitude, and intention to adopt ChatGPT in the context of management education. Method: ology: a non-probability purposive sample of 383 students enrolled in management of Indian public and private institutions was taken to conduct survey to administer questionnaires. Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modelling was employed to analyze the data using Smart PLS software. Findings: the findings...

Co-designing AI with youth partners: Enabling ideal classroom relationships through a novel AI relational privacy ethical framework

Tipo: artículo

Resumen:

Texto completo

In recent years, the design of AI-based tools for educational spaces have been largely driven by researchers who impart their past expertises, experiences, and perspectives in the design process. While this typically leads to technically feasible designs and are often well-grounded in theories of learning, youth agency is typically limited in this process. In this paper, we argue that designers have a significant ethical responsibility to incorporate youth voices – in particular, their dreams and concerns – into the design of AI tools starting from conception. This need is particularly important as new applications for AI, such as AI-supported collaboration, introduce new surveillance...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

Texto completo

Mathematics word problem solving is a critical component of elementary education, yet many students encounter persistent difficulties in this area due to the combined cognitive demands of linguistic comprehension and mathematical reasoning. While previous studies have explored various pedagogical strategies to enhance problem-solving skills, the integration of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in this domain remains underexplored. This study introduces the ChatGPT-supported Mathematics Problem-Solving System (ChatGPT-MPS), a GenAI-enabled learning environment designed to support primary students in developing problem-solving strategies and deepening conceptual understanding. To...

Exploring the relationships among perceived AI ability, academic self-efficacy and independent learning disposition in the tertiary contexts

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Resumen:

Texto completo

As generative AI (GenAI) becomes increasingly embedded in higher education, this study examines how students' perceived AI ability (AIA) relates to their independent learning disposition (INL) and academic self-efficacy (ASE). We administered a quantitative survey to 302 undergraduate students in Hong Kong. Results indicated significant positive correlations among AIA, INL, and ASE. Mediation analysis further showed that INL mediates the association between AIA and ASE: students who perceive themselves as more capable with AI also report stronger independent learning dispositions, which in turn are linked to higher academic self-efficacy. We discuss the potential of AI tools to scaffold...

Resumen:

Introduction: Generative AI is reshaping programming education, yet its effects on conceptual learning, intrinsic motivation, and cognitive load remain unclear. This study tests whether assistance deepens understanding or primarily boosts task completion, and how scaffolded versus answer-giving designs matter. Objectives: This study compares performance, learning, cognitive load, frustration, and motivation across three AI support types, and examines students’ perceptions. Methods: A three-arm randomized controlled trial was conducted in an introductory programming (CS1) course at TUM (N=275). Participants completed a 90-minute exercise on concurrency, implementing a parallel sum with...

Resumen:

Texto completo

This study examines the reliability and accuracy of large language models (LLMs) for automated classroom observation using the World Bank's TEACH Primary framework. As education systems increasingly explore AI-based tools to scale teacher feedback and professional development, empirical validation of these systems is critical. Using a corpus of 12 primary classroom videos, we compared 8618 AI-generated evaluations from eight LLM endpoints against consensus-based ratings from certified TEACH experts. To account for model stochasticity, each model produced 10 independent evaluations per video–element pair. Reliability was assessed using variability and inter-rater consistency indicators,...

Resumen:

Texto completo en HTML

This study investigates university teachers’ relationships with emerging technologies by focusing on the uptake of artificial intelligence in higher education practices. We utilise an experimental philosophy approach to i) determine university teachers’ intuitions around universities’ responsibilities to adopt new artificial intelligence technologies, ii) understand the conditions under which university teachers consider artificial intelligence defensible and, hence, would be willing to introduce such tools and services into their daily practice and iii) specify teachers’ self-reported knowledge of artificial intelligence. An online survey, where participants were sent one of three...
