English grammar multiple-choice question generation using Text-to-Text Transfer Transformer
Peerawat Chomphooyod, Atiwong Suchato, Nuengwong Tuaycharoen (2023)
Computers & Education: Artificial Intelligence

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

Texto completo

English grammar multiple-choice questions (MCQs) can be automatically generated to reduce preparation time. Previous studies have focused on semiautomated methods based on the transformation of human-made sentences/articles into MCQs, owing to which the number of generated questions is dependent on the size of a given text corpus. This study proposes an artificial intelligence-assisted MCQ generation system that increases the number of generable questions using controllable text generation techniques. In this system, the questions for MCQs are generated using a text generation model trained using the Text-to-Text Transfer Transformer (T5) architecture, a powerful deep learning model for...

The rapid advancement of Large Language Models (LLMs), particularly following the release of ChatGPT in November 2022, has significantly transformed educational methodologies. This systematic review aims to synthesize empirical studies published between November 2022 and March 2025, examining the implementation and effectiveness of LLMs in educational settings. 88 empirical studies identified key applications, benefits, and challenges associated with LLM integration in education. Our findings reveal that LLMs are utilized across various educational contexts in six primary applications, with Intelligent Tutoring Systems being particularly prominent. The benefits include improved academic...

Although ChatGPT, a state-of-the-art, large language model, seems to be a disruptive technology in higher education, it is unclear to what extent students rely on this tool for completing different tasks. To address this gap, we asked university students (N = 490) recruited via CloudResearch to rate the extent to which they rely on ChatGPT for completing 13 tasks identified in a previous pilot study. Five distinct profiles emerged: ‘Versatile low reliers’ (38.2%) were characterised by low overall self-reported reliance across the tasks, while ‘all-rounders’ (10.4%) had high overall self-reported reliance. The ‘knowledge seekers’ (16.5%) scored particularly high on tasks such as content...

Resumen:

The rapid proliferation of artificial intelligence tools in educational settings has created an urgent demand for AI literacy among secondary educators, yet empirical research examining this phenomenon in non-Western and crisis-affected contexts remains limited. This multi-study investigation employs a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design to examine AI literacy among Ukrainian secondary educators through national survey analysis ( n = 2018), targeted educator surveys ( n = 116), professional development evaluation ( n = 1130), and systematic mapping of European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) services. Findings reveal that while 84% of surveyed educators report AI use in professional...

Resumen:

Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIEd) is reshaping not only the educational landscape but also potentially influencing the motivations of aspiring teachers. This paper explores whether considerations related to AIEd play a role in student teachers' decision to become teachers. For this aim, the study introduces a new AI subscale within the (D)FIT-Choice scale's Social Utility Value (SUV) factor and validates its effectiveness with a sample of 183 student teachers. Descriptive statistics reveal high mean scores for traditional motivators like Intrinsic Value Teaching, while AI-related factors, although considered, exhibit lower influence. A noticeable disconnection exists between...

Resumen:

This meta-analysis examines the efficacy of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in second language acquisition within self-directed, out-of-classroom informal contexts. A total of 15 studies meeting the inclusion criteria were identified that examined the impact of GenAI on second-language proficiency, motivation, and self-regulation. GenAI was shown to have significant effects on English proficiency and self-regulation, demonstrating its versatility in enhancing language learning outcomes. However, GenAI failed to show significant effects on learning motivation, and based on this finding we highlight the need to develop measures of motivation that are suitable for GenAI in education...

Chatbots provide unique interactions with compatible learning system features, improving the limitations of current learning systems. Educational chatbots are seen as the future of technology integration in the field of education. The success and usefulness of chatbots in the educational setting are highly dependent on teachers' beliefs regarding their efficacy, yet most research focuses on the effects on students' learning. Only a few studies have investigated teachers’ beliefs regarding the use of chatbots, which is considered an important issue. Owning to teachers' beliefs having been transformed from their pre-service teacher training, this study used quantitative (i.e.,...

The rapid transformation of educational practice by artificial intelligence (AI) requires that teacher-education programmes prepare pre-service teachers to integrate AI into their teaching. This qualitative study explores pre-service teachers' perceptions of AI integration in education and identifies the support they need to develop AI literacy. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 15 pre-service teachers and used thematic analysis to interpret the data. Our findings revealed that these future educators recognised AI's potential to enhance personalised learning and increase classroom efficiency but worried about relying on AI too much and losing the human element in teaching. The...

The release of ChatGPT in November 2022 has sparked discussions about integrating Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) into teacher education. Teacher educators, as key facilitators of pre-service teacher learning, play a critical role in shaping the successful adoption of GenAI. Their perceptions guide curriculum redesign, define promoted practices, and shape how pre-service teachers experience educational uses of GenAI tools, potentially multiplying its impact across future classrooms. This mixed-methods study explored Danish teacher educators’ perceptions of GenAI (n = 91), focusing on its transformative potential and the knowledge pre-service teachers need to acquire. This study applied Self Determination Study to understand 25 undergraduate students' motivation to learn the English language via chatbot. The data collected from interviews were categorized based on three psychological needs of learners: autonomy, competence and relatedness. The interview data were categorized based on the thematic analysis suggested by Braun and Clarke. The findings revealed that chatbots support competence, autonomy, and relatedness. However, the findings also revealed that chatbots lack an emotional environment and give inaccurate English language learning information. To address these problems, students suggested that chatbots should be used solely for assessment...
