AI-based language tools such as ChatGPT have the potential to fundamentally change studying and teaching at universities. Since there have been few empirical studies on the use of AI systems by students, this article aims to analyze the use of AI in higher education. In particular, it focuses on identifying features that are important to students when using AI during their studies. For this purpose, a choice-based conjoint experiment was conducted through a survey involving over 6300 participants from German universities. The results show that students attach particular importance to the degree of scientific rigor. The optimal package for an AI-based tool for studying includes the citation...

Resumen:

Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have raised debate regarding whether the existing digital literacy frameworks are outdated and have called for developing new frameworks to keep pace with the growing adoption of AI technologies. Drawing on an ecological perspective and analyzing 80 validated frameworks (69 digital literacy and 11 AI literacy) published between January 2014 and February 2025, this study explored the variation in digital literacy frameworks by comparing and contrasting their sub-dimensions, identified the commonalities and differences, using DigComp 2.2 as a reference, across developing and developed regions, and evaluated the influences of AI technologies on updating...

ChatGPT has diffused widely and rapidly, with diverse positive and negative implications. In educational settings it is important to understand students' perceptions of the acceptability of ChatGPT for various learning activities and to examine whether prior digital divide concerns pertain to this digital innovation, in order to provide guidance for users, inform policymakers and other stakeholders, and extend digital divide research. The purpose is to investigate the associations of socioeconomic status (SES, both family and student), gender, and race/ethnicity with students’ perceived acceptability of common ChatGPT activities as well as their opinion about how beneficial ChatGPT is for...

Artiicial intelligence technologies, such as ChatGPT, Bert, LaMDA, and T5 have become deeply integrated into universities, influencing numerous functions within higher education and various aspects of students' lives. This article examined how students' perceptions of ChatGPT influence their engagement and performance in online learning, focusing on the mediating role of engagement. The perception of ChatGPT involves a student's understanding of, willingness to utilize, and concerns regarding the technology. These interconnected factors can influence students' online learning engagement with the software and, consequently, affect their academic performance. The study used self-reported data...

Resumen:

Since artificial intelligence (AI) is finding its way into more and more areas of everyday life, improving the AI skills of non-experts is important and will become even more relevant in the future. While it is necessary that children learn about the possibilities of AI at an early age, adults in higher education and beyond should also have at least a basic understanding of AI (i.e., AI literacy) to be able to interact effectively with the technology. To evaluate the current state of the literature on AI literacy in higher and adult education, a scoping literature review was conducted with the objective of identifying thematic foci and recent research trends. Ten research databases were...

Resumen:

Scene description tasks effectively enhance students' English writing skills in contextual settings, facilitating the establishment of authentic situational connections. However, evaluating descriptive quality and providing accurate, level-appropriate feedback present significant challenges. Although Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have demonstrated strong capabilities in vision-language tasks, their generated feedback for scene description tasks often remains generic. It fails to account for students' educational stages. To address this limitation, we construct a novel level-specific feedback dataset for scene description tasks. This dataset is constructed using GPT-4o with...

The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace is pressuring employees to learn how to harness this technology. The goal of promoting AI literacy is to equip educated citizens with the readiness to apply AI. The aim of this study is to provide evidence to guide the development of an AI Literacy Framework to prepare educated citizens to participate in future society. We report on a 14-h AI literacy course for senior secondary students, emphasising problem-solving competence development and adopting the project-based learning approach. One hundred and twenty-eight students completed the course, and a mixed-methods analysis was conducted to evaluate the results. A post-course test...

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has been widely used in education, yet many students still lack the skills to fully leverage its potential. A systematic search was conducted across three academic databases from 2020 to 2025. This scoping review explores the evolving landscape of GenAI applications and introduces prompt engineering as a critical competency students need to develop to bridge their AI literacy and enhance their technical skills and critical thinking in higher education. A search across Scopus, PubMed, and ERIC yielded 76 studies that were systematically reviewed to identify relevant research. The PRISMA-ScR guidelines were used to determine which studies met the...

As generative artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly integrated into K-12 education, there is a pressing need for AI literacy initiatives to incorporate learning resources that are both age-appropriate and ethically grounded. This study examined acceptance of the AI Learning Application Guidebook, developed in Elementary and Advanced editions for learners aged 9–12 and 13–18, respectively. The Elementary edition features scaffolded, platform-based, non-generative activities, whereas the Advanced edition includes authentic applications, ethical reasoning exercises, and supervised engagement with generative AI. The guidebooks were evaluated in Taiwanese classrooms by 831...

Integrating generative AI (GAI) into higher education is crucial for preparing a future generation of GAI-literate students. However, a comprehensive understanding of global institutional adoption policies remains absent, with most prior studies focusing on the Global North and lacking a theoretical lens. This study utilizes the Diffusion of Innovations Theory to examine GAI adoption strategies in higher education across 40 universities from six global regions. It explores the characteristics of GAI innovation, including compatibility, trialability, and observability, and analyses the communication channels and roles and responsibilities outlined in university policies and guidelines. The...
