Resumen:
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into language education is transforming pedagogical practices. This transformation is influenced by two distinct yet interconnected domains: the cognitive domain, encompassing AI literacy, and the affective domain, involving AI-induced emotions. However, the dynamic interplay between cognition and emotion in this context is a critical yet underexplored area of research. This study presents a systematic review, compliant with PRISMA guidelines, synthesizing findings from the Web of Science, Scopus, and ProQuest databases. The review delineates the specific characteristics of AI literacy and catalogues the range of emotions arising from AI use. To...

Resumen:
L2 motivational self system (L2MSS) has offered novel pathways for motivating language learners by introducing the concepts of possible selves, vision and imagery. The aim of the study was to examine the effectiveness of a vision-based motivational intervention program in improving motivational attributes of Iranian learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). A total of 51 male and female adult Iranian EFL learners formed the experimental and control groups. The experimental groups received the treatment during an academic semester. The intervention consisted of six steps and included various tasks and activities to improve the students’ vision and imagination. A Likert scale self-report questionnaire was administered before and after the intervention. Marginal qualitative data was also collected for a more in-depth analysis of...

Effective learning strategies have been proven to be advantageous to lower learners’ foreign language anxiety (FLA) and improve their language proficiency. However, many studies have devoted to students’ learning strategies but ignored the important role of teachers in reducing FLA. In addition, the effectiveness of the FLA-reducing strategies proposed by these studies has rarely been verified in natural classroom environment. The present study was conducted to explore the systematic effects of the teaching strategies on FLA after constructing a 34-item observation instrument Teaching Strategies Intervention Scale (TSIS), and investigated the changes of 306 English as a foreign language (EFL) graduate students’ English learning anxiety levels influenced by the anxiety-reducing teaching strategies in China. Results showed that the...

Resumen:
Despite extensive research in task-based language learning, the role of learners’ motivational dispositions in their task experience and performance has remained underexplored. To help bridge that gap, this study investigated the relationships between second language (L2) learners’ chronic regulatory focus and their oral task emotions and performance. One hundred and thirty-three high school students studying English as a foreign language in China completed a regulatory focus questionnaire, an English proficiency self-rating questionnaire, an oral opinion task, and a post-task questionnaire measuring their task anxiety and enjoyment. Multiple regression results showed that the learners’ chronic promotion focus positively predicted their task enjoyment, which, in turn, predicted their oral task performance. In addition, the...

Resumen:
Drawing upon the dialogic theory, this study investigated the effects of writing personal experience narratives (PENs) of critical events on English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ narrative competence development. The study collected a multiple source of data from 66 students at one Chinese university, including PENs of critical events, reflective journals, and semi-structured interviews. PENs were concerned with students’ critical events during the transitional periods of life from secondary to higher education, whereas reflective journals and interviews were used to gain students’ perceptions of narrative writing and narrative competence. Narrative competence was assessed via narrative writing performance, narrative coherence, and narrative cohesion. It was found that writing PENs over a period of two semesters aided EFL...

Resumen:
Set against the profound precarity and disruption of Ukrainian higher education during Russia’s war against Ukraine, this study examines how 9 university English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers sustained their professional lives and wellbeing through participation in a Cooperative Development (CD) initiative within a language teacher association. The study encompasses a secondary thematic analysis of transcripts from a 9-month online CD project comprising 10 structured, non-evaluative peer-support sessions in which participants alternated Speaker, Understander, and Listener roles to reflect on their professional lives through narration and dialogue. The findings showed that CD offered...

The present research aimed to explore the dynamic growth of two emotional constructs: foreign language enjoyment (FLE) and foreign language learning boredom (FLLB) among L2 learners. To do so, we used a method that would capture the inherent dynamicity of L2 learners’ enjoyment and boredom during an EFL course. To this aim, a bivariate latent growth curve model (LGCM) was employed to examine the covariance between 412 EFL learners’ initial and growth levels of FLE and FLLB on four measurement occasions at two-week intervals. To collect the data, the original FLE scale and the newly developed FLLB scale were used. The model including the covariance between intercepts and slopes of FLE and FLLB was tested in Mplus 7. The analysis of the data revealed that the covariance between the intercept and slope of the FLE and FLLB was...

Resumen:
Although research into emotions has flourished in second language (L2) / foreign language (FL) learning in recent decades, few attempts have been made to examine learners as clusters based on their emotional profiles. The current study set out to first investigate the nature of 98 Grade-4-to-5 English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ emotional profiles, as represented by classroom anxiety, boredom, and enjoyment. The hierarchical clustering analysis revealed three distinct profiles: Negative Emotion (NE; 21.43%), High Enjoyment (HE; 46.93%), and high in both Enjoyment and Anxiety (EA; 31.63%). We then analysed FL motivation and family background (household income and parental education) between the three groups. We also compared the FL proficiency levels (listening, reading, speaking, and writing) between the three groups from...
