Resumen:
Since it was released in November 2022, ChatGPT has been exerting revolutionary influence on the realm of higher education. In order to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the research landscape, we conduct a systematic literature review on the studies of ChatGPT used in higher education. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were adopted to bibliometrically examine the included literature selected from Web of Science and Scopus through the PRISMA protocol. Tools of VOSviewer and CitNetExplorer were employed to visualize the citation information. Our findings showed that the recent two years witnessed an ever-growing popularity of this research theme. Citation information analysis...

Resumen:
As generative AI (GenAI) becomes increasingly embedded in higher education, this study examines how students' perceived AI ability (AIA) relates to their independent learning disposition (INL) and academic self-efficacy (ASE). We administered a quantitative survey to 302 undergraduate students in Hong Kong. Results indicated significant positive correlations among AIA, INL, and ASE. Mediation analysis further showed that INL mediates the association between AIA and ASE: students who perceive themselves as more capable with AI also report stronger independent learning dispositions, which in turn are linked to higher academic self-efficacy. We discuss the potential of AI tools to scaffold...

Resumen:
Generative AI (GenAI) is increasingly adopted in design education, yet evaluating its educational value through final outcomes provides an incomplete picture. This study compares two ecologically plausible workflows in an architectural conceptual design task: GenAI-assisted image generation and ArchDaily-based precedent search. The comparison concerns complete workflows rather than the isolated contributions. Thirty-six students completed a two-phase design task, first designing independently and then revising with their assigned workflow. Screen-recording demonstrated active engagement in both conditions. Eight judges rated design performance, while participants reported task-specific and...

Resumen:
A few limited efforts have been made to promote artificial intelligence (AI) literacy for citizens. The objective of this study was to design, implement and evaluate an AI literacy course for university students. One of the study's research questions was whether university students from a variety of disciplines could develop a conceptual understanding of AI through a literacy course. We promoted this course to 4000 students and recruited 120 volunteer participants to attend and complete the 7-h course. The results of our pre-course and post-course surveys indicated that the participants made significant progress in understanding AI concepts, felt empowered to work with AI. These findings...

Resumen:
This study examines the role of higher education students’ perceptions in adapting Generative AI (GenAI) tools for teaching and learning, with a particular focus on the factors that influence student satisfaction and engagement. A comparative approach is adopted, exploring student experiences at Zayed University (ZU) in the UAE and King Abdulaziz University (KAU) in Saudi Arabia. The principal variables of interest, including Expected Benefits (EB), University Support (US), Ethical Awareness (EA), and Technology Self-Efficacy (TSE), are examined, with particular attention to their direct and mediated influences through Behavioral Intention (BI) on student satisfaction (SS). Data were...

Resumen:
There is a resonant association between the implementation of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) and students’ ability to identify, analyse, and select the best options among alternatives. Accordingly, this study examines the impact of GenAI adoption on business students' perception of their decision-making capability through the lenses of decision augmentation theory (DAT) and cognitive load theory (CLT). A survey was administered to 350 business college students in the United Arab Emirates. Using structural equation modelling, the study examined key constructs, including cognitive load reduction, information quality, and decision confidence as mediators, and GenAI trust as a...

Resumen:
Service learning courses have seen a sharp increase in a variety of disciplines in universities internationally. Language classes, in particular, enjoy the advantages of offering students exposure to the languages and cultures about which they are studying. With the rise in the number of Spanish speakers around the world, university instructors are realizing the benefits of using service learning (SL) as a means to connect students with the community while putting them in direct contact with the target language (Bettencourt, 2015). Because of the variations of Spanish spoken worldwide due to the diversity of Hispanic populations and cultures, educators can also observe whether students...

Resumen:
The rapid integration of AI-based tools in education calls for a critical assessment of how these technologies impact student engagement. This study explores the perceived effects of AI chat tools by analyzing pre- and post-semester survey data from 724 to 642 students, respectively, across diverse disciplines and demographic groups. Initially, students reported high levels of engagement in key areas such as academic self-efficacy, autonomy, interest, and self-regulation. However, by the semester's end, all these areas showed a noticeable decline. This suggests that while AI tools offer initial benefits, their long-term effectiveness in maintaining engagement may be limited due to...

Resumen:
The rapid adoption of Large Language Models (LLMs) such as GPT-4 and DeepSeek R1 is transforming learning in higher education, yet unstructured use can weaken critical thinking by encouraging cognitive offloading, metacognitive disengagement, and reduced epistemic agency. This paper presents a conceptual and normative analysis that synthesises research from cognitive psychology, educational theory, and AI ethics to develop a design-oriented pedagogical framework for integrating LLMs in ways that strengthen, rather than displace, higher-order thinking. Grounded in design-based research principles, the framework identifies six essential processes that underpin critical engagement: conceptual...

Resumen:
Artificial Intelligence has greatly revolutionized education in many aspects. Today, AI-enabled language models, such as ChatGPT, are gaining popularity due to their characteristics and benefits. However, users also consider them a threat to educational integrity and purposes. This research examined ChatGPT usage among students in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), their views, concerns, and perceived ethics. The data was gathered from 388 students from two universities in Al Ain city using Yamane's formula. Findings showed that students consider ChatGPT a revolutionary technology that helps students in many ways. The gathered data showed that the effect of ChatGPT Usage remained significant...
