ChatGPT has quickly infiltrated the educational landscape and teachers are engaging with this tool to support their teaching activities, including lesson development. In this study, eight elementary school teachers are guided in the development of motivationally-supportive mathematics lessons using ChatGPT as a tool to support student positive mathematics emotions, motivation, and engagement as theorized within Control Value Theory (CVT). Results reveal that teachers found ChatGPT useful for this purpose and that the lessons implemented demonstrated some success in fostering motivationally-supportive math activities. Compared to non-ChatGPT lessons, in lessons developed with ChatGPT, the...

The present research was to bridge a research gap in comprehensively understanding students’ perceptions and experiences in utilizing ChatGPT for their writing process in English as a foreign language (EFL) context. The participants were 45 EFL learners in Macau. The study aimed to explore the potential impact of ChatGPT on writing, as well as their perceptions and experiences of ChatGPT in generating feedback for writing. A mixed-methods approach was employed, with quantitative data collected from a questionnaire and qualitative insights drawn from interviews conducted after a semester-long writing course. The findings supported the significant positive effects of AI assistance on writing...

Resumen:

With the rise of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), tools such as ChatGPT have shown great potential in enhancing online learning. However, existing applications in video-based learning remain limited, as they typically require learners to pause or switch interfaces to access AI support, disrupting learning continuity. To address this challenge, this study proposes a framework that utilizes ChatGPT to generate comments for an individual learner (i-Comments), displayed as scrolling text over educational videos, providing both knowledge and emotional support based on scaffolding theory. The present study evaluates the framework's generation capabilities to gain empirical insight that...

The recent emergence of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools, such as ChatGPT, has brought profound changes to higher education. While many studies have examined the potential use of ChatGPT in teaching and learning, few have explored the opportunities to develop assessments that facilitate the use of multiple technological innovations (i.e. traditional AI and GenAI tools). We conducted qualitative research to address this gap. The assessments of an elective English course in Hong Kong were re-designed to incorporate GenAI and other tools. Students were asked to employ and reflect on their use of these tools for their writing assessments. We analyzed the written reflections of...

From teachers to chatbots: Scaffolded corrective feedback and student trust in online L2 English classrooms

Resumen:

Teacher corrective feedback (TCF) plays a vital role in second language (L2) learning. Recent studies have examined feedback provided by both human teachers and large language models (LLMs). However, little is known about how students' trust differs toward scaffolded corrective feedback (SCF)—that is, feedback that incrementally progresses from indirect to direct during interaction—when it is provided by an LLM such as ChatGPT versus a language teacher. To address this gap, this study compared the effects of SCF, delivered by language teachers and ChatGPT, on L2 learning outcomes and student trust. Using a mixed-methods design, 40 lower-intermediate Iranian learners of English as a foreign...

Since it was released in November 2022, ChatGPT has been exerting revolutionary influence on the realm of higher education. In order to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the research landscape, we conduct a systematic literature review on the studies of ChatGPT used in higher education. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were adopted to bibliometrically examine the included literature selected from Web of Science and Scopus through the PRISMA protocol. Tools of VOSviewer and CitNetExplorer were employed to visualize the citation information. Our findings showed that the recent two years witnessed an ever-growing popularity of this research theme. Citation information analysis...

AI-based language tools such as ChatGPT have the potential to fundamentally change studying and teaching at universities. Since there have been few empirical studies on the use of AI systems by students, this article aims to analyze the use of AI in higher education. In particular, it focuses on identifying features that are important to students when using AI during their studies. For this purpose, a choice-based conjoint experiment was conducted through a survey involving over 6300 participants from German universities. The results show that students attach particular importance to the degree of scientific rigor. The optimal package for an AI-based tool for studying includes the citation...

The benefits of artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled language models, such as ChatGPT, have contributed to their growing popularity in education. However, there is currently a lack of evidence regarding the perception of ChatGPT, specifically among design students. This study aimed to understand the product design (PD) and user experience design (UXD) students' views on ChatGPT and focused on an Indian university. The study employed a survey research design, utilizing questionnaires as the primary data collection method. The collected data (n = 149) was analyzed using descriptive statistics (i.e., frequency, percentage, average, and standard deviation (SD). Inferential statistics (i.e., one...
