Going beyond practicing English: Language alternation in an L2 book club’s Zoom meetings
Eunseok Ro (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: translingüismo

Resumen:

This study investigates the occurrence of students’ language alternation practices during second language (L2) book talk. The data were collected at a voluntary book club for learning English at a university in Korea. The book club was implemented using Zoom. In this context, using multimodal conversation analysis, I highlight instances in which students successfully construct their book talk in English (their L2) but go further by providing translations in Korean (their first language), thus doing repair to deal with (potential) problems of understanding and speaking. The findings show that through these self-repair practices of translation the student-speakers are not only (1) pursuing mutual understanding with the recipients but also (2) managing their turn construction in their doing of book talk. I argue that through these...

Input spacing and the learning of L2 vocabulary in a classroom context
John Rogers, Anisa Cheung (2020)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario

Resumen:

This study examined the optimal learning schedule for second language vocabulary within an authentic classroom setting in Hong Kong. Following a pretest, treatment, delayed posttest design, fifty-two primary school students (Cantonese first language) studied 20 English adjectives over two learning episodes under spaced-short (1-day interval) or spaced-long (8-day interval) learning conditions. The spacing of the vocabulary items was manipulated within-participants, and learning was assessed on a multiple-choice posttest, administered following a four-week delay. In contrast to previous laboratory-based findings, the results here indicated superior learning of the items presented under the spaced-short format, suggesting that lag effects might be attenuated by age, learning context and teaching procedure.

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: profesorado

Resumen:

The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically impacted language teaching and learning environments. The current study explored how language teachers have adapted to post-COVID-19 classrooms. It also examined the ways in which their experiences during the pandemic influenced their teaching. Drawing on an ecological perspective toward language teacher agency (LTA), this study interviewed 10 less commonly taught language (LCTL) teachers to explore their expectations, preparations, and teaching strategies for post-COVID-19 classrooms. In addition, it aimed to discern the challenges encountered by teachers, their approaches to overcoming them, and the consequential influence of these experiences on their overall perspective of language teaching. The findings revealed mixed feelings among the teachers regarding returning to in-person instruction,...

The effects of teacher motivational practice on learner L2 achievement: A self-determination theory perspective using structural equation modeling
Fakieh Alrabai, Abdullah Alamer (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación

Resumen:

A central point that has attracted researchers’ attention for several decades is related to establishing the causal relationship between student motivation and second language (L2) achievement. Based on self-determination theory, we investigated the effects of motivational interventions applied by English language teachers on subsequent L2 achievement through the meditating effect of students’ basic psychological need for autonomy, intrinsic motivation, and motivational intensity. To obtain precise results, we applied structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine whether the impact of the intervention on L2 achievement was direct and/or indirect. The results of SEM indicated that the effect is both direct and indirect, and the model variables explained approximately 87% of the variance in students’ achievement. Moreover, the indirect...

Not the Artificial Intelligence, but the Sequence: Instructional Design and Oral Communication Strategy Development
Zola Chi-Chin Lai (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: estrategias de comunicación

Resumen:

This study examines how instructional design shapes the development of oral communication strategies in an 18-week English-as-a-foreign-language speaking course, at a time when generative artificial intelligence is often assumed to enhance speaking performance. All three classes worked with the same curriculum and speaking tasks. One class learned through a BOPPPS (Bridge-In, Objective, Pre-Assessment, Participatory Learning, Post-Assessment, and Summary) based sequence in which students prepared ideas, participated in guided speaking activities, and reviewed their performance, with each cycle including a stage where they generated their own content before using ChatGPT to refine it. A second class received regular teacher guidance and completed the same tasks, but their use of ChatGPT was self-directed and not part of a fixed...

The language and non-language benefits of literature in foreign language education: An exploratory study of learners’ views
Art Tsang, Amos Paran, Wilfred W.F. Lau (2023)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

Set against the backcloth of increasing recognition and attention to literature in foreign language education (FLE) globally, this article reports part of a large-scale study of 1,190 secondary-level learners’ views of the benefits of literature, as instantiated by short stories (ShS) and poems and songs (PS) in their English-as-a-foreign-language learning. An inventory of 27 items (13 language-related and 14 non-language-related) was compiled with reference to previous studies and curricular documents. The analyses compared the two modules through independent t-tests, as well as including an exploratory factor analysis to examine latent factors. Findings reveal a three factor structure and a slightly positive view of the benefits of literature. ShS were perceived to be generally more beneficial than PS, especially in the domains of...

L1 versus L2 writing processes: What insight can we obtain from a keystroke logging program?
Mohammed Ali Mohsen (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: expresión escrita

Resumen:

Writing in a language different from one’s mother tongue is a daunting task. The same challenge may apply to languages that have diglossic features whose spoken form differs from the written form. This article investigates Arab students’ writing behaviors (fluency, pauses, and revision) in response to an argumentative composition in their L1 (first language: Arabic) and L2 (second language: English), given that understanding their complexities in writing processes would help instructors to rectify language writing-related problems. Guided by Kellogg’s model, this article attempts to investigate the cognitive processes underlying these writing behaviors as aided by a keystroke logging program (Inputlog 7.0). It also examined if writing behaviors would be correlated to the writing quality of their produced final texts. Data were...

Greater complexity and higher efficiency: Effects of translanguaging during collaborative pre-task planning on EFL learners’ speaking performance
Xinran Luo, Peijian Paul Sun (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: translingüismo

Resumen:

Translanguaging has thrived as a pedagogy for second language (L2) acquisition because of its potential in maximizing L2 learners’ communicative repertoire. However, limited attention has been paid to how translanguaging can influence L2 speaking within the framework of task-based language teaching (TBLT). This study explored how different language use (i.e., L2 only and translanguaging) in collaborative pre-task planning contributed to L2 learners’ subsequent monologic speaking performance, as measured by complexity, accuracy, fluency (CAF), and idea units. The planning behaviours were also examined to offer explanations for the differences in learners’ speaking performance. Altogether 72 undergraduate students from a Chinese university voluntarily participated in this study. The results showed that translanguaging planning...

Resumen:

This study aims to investigate how the linguistic landscape can affect self-efficacy to improve the students’ foreign language enjoyment and learning in China with an emphasis on the moderating effect of language policy. It is crucial to establish how these factors influence students’ achievement in foreign language education in China. The current study sample comprised 550 students from different educational institutes in Beijing, China. Data were collected using convenience sampling technique. The study applied structural equation modeling (SEM) for analyzing the data using IBM SPSS AMOS software. The results affirm all proposed hypotheses. The findings reveal that linguistic landscape has a direct influence on self-efficacy (H1) and foreign language enjoyment and learning (H2). Self-efficacy has a positive effect on foreign...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: adquisición de segundas lenguas

Resumen:

Texto completo

The present study tested the hypothesis that phonological vocabulary knowledge consists of declarative and automatized dimensions, which develop at different rates. Chinese students of English as a foreign language completed three tasks (recognition, recall, and lexicosemantic judgements) to assess learning gains of 18 multiword expressions before and after short intentional audiovisual training. The results showed that (1) task effects were minor at the outset due to participants’ limited prior knowledge of target items, (2) training facilitated greater gains in the declarative than in the automatized dimension, and (3) clearer task effects (declarative > automatized knowledge) emerged...
