Resumen:
This book contributes to emerging research on third language acquisition (TLA) and pinpoints the main factors characterising TLA as a different process and area of study from second language acquisition. Moving beyond the dichotomous conception of monolingualism and bilingualism, it proposes a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to studying acquisition of a third or additional language. It presents readers with a practical guide to understanding how these languages are processed, learned and taught and addresses the cognitive, linguistic and affective factors which make multilingual learning and teaching a complex and unique phenomenon. It also emphasises the important role of teachers as knowledge generators. Through various examples of multilingual education practices, it highlights how fundamental teachers are as bridges...

Resumen:
Despite the burgeoning field of Spanish second language acquisition (SLA) research, large Spanish learner corpora (LC) are not common practice yet. We present a general yet practical introduction to the multiple decisions Spanish as a second language (L2) researchers should consider before creating their own LC. We focus on (i) two freely available Spanish LC (CEDEL2 and COWS-L2H), (ii) their general design principles, (iii) crucial variables to collect (learner and task variables), (iv) ways of collecting and compiling LC data, and (v) the final product (the corpus interface). We explore different ways of interrogating the two corpora, illustrating them with specific (morpho)syntactic and lexical examples from L2 Spanish, as well as potential curricular and teaching applications of LC. We conclude with a recommendation for the...

Resumen:
This study measured the impact of explicit instruction on accent usage in the written production of Spanish heritage language (SHL) learners. 163 university students were divided into two types of basic?and intermediate?level SHL courses: one in which they received explicit instruction regarding accent marks (EI), and another in which they did not (non-EI). Findings suggest that the effectiveness of explicit instruction depends upon level of study and task type. In EI, the accuracy of first semester SHL students improved significantly, while their counterparts in non-EI course showed no appreciable gains. The case of intermediate-level learners, who had some prior formal study, was more variable. Although high-, mid-, and low-performing learners in second semester EI courses showed significant improvement in a dictation task (while...

Resumen:
The present study applies critical race theory and a raciolinguistic perspective to understand the orientations of language programs in the United States towards developing bilingualism. More specifically, the study draws on survey and in-depth interview data from self-identified Latinx Spanish-English bilinguals who participated in English-dominant and bilingual curricula. We establish that the practices and policies of extant programs are grounded in injurious ideologies that result in the racialization of Latinx students. In particular, the results point to multiple factors?student assessment and placements, teachers? linguistic and social profiles, and instructors? corrective feedback?all of which racialize heritage Spanish speakers by essentializing and homogenizing them and by linking them to notions of ?other?, often with...

Resumen:
As language departments increasingly face enrollment concerns, empirical research can provide insights regarding students? reasons to study Spanish. Motivation has a key influence in learners? success and can be internal (e.g., an intrinsic desire or passion for learning) or external (e.g., imposed by others). This study examined motivational factors (motives) for students (N = 149) enrolled in the first required, last required, and first elective Spanish undergraduate courses. Seven motivational categories were examined: Integrative, Instrumental, Intrinsic, Ideal self, Ought-to self, Wish for language proficiency, and Political context. Results at all levels showed that Wish for language fluency was the principal motivator while factors stemming from external motivations were less important. Students in the elective course displayed...

Resumen:
In this article we explore the role of linguistic landscapes, which refers to language on display in public spaces, in the teaching of languages and enhancing language awareness. Signage can be useful for language learners as a pedagogical tool for language acquisition and to explore issues of multilingualism.
We focus in particular on the multilingual education context in the Basque Country in Spain, where the three languages of instruction are Basque, Spanish and English. Our analysis is based on data collected in public spaces, from students in primary schools and masters-level students at university. Our data include signage in a local covered market, and on the walls of schools as...

Resumen:
This study contributes to research on second language pedagogy by exploring the experience of advanced second language and heritage language university students of Spanish who, as part of their class, participated in a community-based learning experience in local health and social service clinics serving vulnerable populations. By focusing on students? memories and perceptions of the experience as well as their acquisition of vocabulary, the study elucidates not only the concrete gains in linguistic ability but also the affective aspect of a community-based learning experience.

Resumen:
This paper aims to redefine Spanish language education in the U.S. by showing how the increased presence of Latinx Spanish-speakers in classrooms brings into question the traditional way in which Spanish language teaching is divided into three, separate fields: as a foreign language, in bilingual education, and as a heritage language. It proposes that Spanish language education focuses on the ways in which the numerous U.S. Latinx perform language, and the reasons for their ways of languaging. The article explores the linked histories of Spanish language education in the U.S and racialization of the U.S. Latinx community. A review of how Spanish language education has constituted itself as three separate fields is then presented, as the cracks in the divisions today are analyzed. The article then proposes a reconstitution of Spanish...

Resumen:
This book demonstrates the positive impact of using film and audiovisual material in the language classroom. The chapters are evidence-based and address different levels and contexts of learning around the world. They demonstrate the benefits of using moving images and films to develop intercultural awareness and promote multilingualism, and suggest Audiovisual Translation (AVT) activities and projects to enhance language learning. The book will be a valuable continuing professional development resource for language teachers and those involved in curriculum development, as well as bringing the latest research, theory and pedagogical techniques to teacher training courses.
