The application of learning sciences with technology has been shown to boost learner interactions, yet the potential of advanced tool, particularly those that leverage Natural Language Processing (NLP), still very much untapped in learning contexts. This paper speaks to this age-old problem of generating quality Multiple-Choice questions (MCQs) – a prevalent but time-consuming mode of assessment – via the suggested comprehensive comparison study of template-based AI solutions. The study contrasts general-purpose Large Language Models (LLMs) with specialized MCQ-focused AI programs. The scientific approach employed was quite stringent, where each of the software applications was benchmarked...

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly and consistently becoming more integrated in various aspects of our lives. One of the areas where these systems are increasingly used is education. In fact, it is both being incorporated into specific curricula, allowing students the possibility to acquire skills within this field, and more recently AI has been used as a tool to facilitate the teaching and learning process. However, an increased demand and availability of these tools do not imply a successful switch from traditional to AI-supported learning. In this work, ChatGMP, a chatbot leveraging a Large Language Model (LLM) able to conduct an interview exercise in a Master's Degree course taught...

Retaining learner engagement is a major challenge in online learning environments, which is even more intensified with learning spaces increasingly built by combining resources from multiple independent sources. Narrative-centric learning experience has been found to improve learner engagement by several researchers. Towards this end, we propose an AI-based approach that generates auxiliary learning content called narrative fragments which are interspersed into the learning pathways to create interactive learning narratives. The proposed approach consists of the automatic generation of two types of narrative fragments– overviews of the learning pathway segments and reflection...

The rapid integration of Generative AI (GenAI) into higher education presents both opportunities and systemic challenges, particularly in domains where feedback is central to learning. This study investigates the capacity of a large language model to generate formative feedback for student-created UML diagrams in a university software engineering course. Across two cohorts (N = 262), AI-generated, teacher-generated, and no-feedback conditions were compared, analyzing student perceptions, learning outcomes, and grading reliability. Results show that while students rated GenAI feedback as beneficial and often comparable to human comments, teacher feedback remained more effective in supporting...

Relying on human experts to evaluate the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) speaking assessments in an e-learning environment creates scalability challenges, as it limits how quickly and widely assessments can be conducted. We aim to automate the evaluation of CEFR B2 English speaking assessments in e-learning environments from conversation transcripts. First, we evaluate the capability of leading open source and commercial Large Language Models (LLMs) to score a candidate’s performance across various criteria in the CEFR B2 speaking exam in both global and India-specific contexts. Next, we create a new expert-validated, CEFR-aligned synthetic conversational dataset...

Assessment feedback is important to student learning. Learning analytics (LA) powered by artificial intelligence exhibits profound potential in helping instructors with the laborious provision of feedback. Inspired by the recent advancements made by Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) models, we conducted a study to examine the extent to which GPT models hold the potential to advance the existing knowledge of LA-supported feedback systems towards improving the efficiency of feedback provision. Therefore, our study explored the ability of two versions of GPT models – i.e., GPT-3.5 (ChatGPT) and GPT-4 – to generate assessment feedback on students' writing assessment tasks, common in...

Leveraging an LLM-enhanced bilingual conversational agent for EFL children’s dialogic reading: Insights from children, parents, and educators

Resumen:

Dialogic reading, a technique in which adults and children engage in interactive discussions around a story, has been shown to improve children’s language and literacy development. Despite its evidence-based benefits, its adoption amongfamilies with English as a Foreign Language (EFL) backgrounds has been particularly challenging due to limited English proficiency, restricted conversational skills, and a low inclination to read in English. This paper presents “Storio'', an e-book integrated with a bilingual large language model (LLM)-based conversational agent named “Mia'', used as a design probe to investigate interactions between EFL children (N=17) and the agent, and to gather insights...

Resumen:

Artificial intelligence technologies are rapidly advancing. As part of this development, large language models (LLMs) are increasingly being used when humans interact with systems based on artificial intelligence (AI), posing both new opportunities and challenges. When interacting with LLM-based AI system in a goal-directed manner, prompt engineering has evolved as a skill of formulating precise and well-structured instructions to elicit desired responses or information from the LLM, optimizing the effectiveness of the interaction. However, research on the perspectives of non-experts using LLM-based AI systems through prompt engineering and on how AI literacy affects prompting behavior is...

LLMs do not grade essays like humans

Resumen:

Large language models have recently been proposed as tools for automated essay scoring, but their agreement with human grading remains unclear. In this work, we evaluate how LLM-generated scores compare with human grades and analyze the grading behavior of several models from the GPT and Llama families in an out-of-the-box setting, without task-specific training. Our results show that agreement between LLM and human scores remains relatively weak and varies with essay characteristics. In particular, compared to human raters, LLMs tend to assign higher scores to short or underdeveloped essays, while assigning lower scores to longer essays that contain minor grammatical or spelling errors. We...
