Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: propuesta didáctica

Temas: juegos

Resumen:

Texto completo

Student engagement with teacher oral feedback in EFL university classrooms
Bo Wang, Shulin Yu, Yao Zheng (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación

Resumen:

While previous research has investigated teacher oral feedback practices and their influences on student learning, little research has examined how students interpret and engage with teacher feedback, which is critical to the feedback effectiveness and the success of learning and performance. According to Ellis, student engagement is clearly defined as the ways that students respond to the feedback, which can be cognitive, behavioral, and affective. Drawing upon students’ oral presentations together with teacher oral feedback, semi-structured interviews, stimulated recalls, reflective accounts, and PowerPoint (PPT) slides for the oral presentations, this case study investigates three undergraduates’ cognitive, behavioral, and affective engagement with teachers’ oral feedback provided on in-class oral presentations in an English as a...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enfoque por tareas

Resumen:

This study explores the interplay between task repetition and task motivation in second language (L2) writing, specifically focusing on syntactic complexity, accuracy, and lexical complexity (CAL). Aligning with Dörnyei’s call to balance cognitive and affective factors in task-based language teaching (TBLT), the research involved 100 advanced mid-level learners of English as a second language (ESL) aged between 18 and 20 years. Participants completed both simple and complex argumentative writing tasks in a counterbalanced order, with a one-week interval between tasks. A perception questionnaire was administered immediately after each task performance to validate cognitive task complexity manipulations. Subsequently, participants repeated the same tasks with the same time interval, complemented by the completion of a task motivation...

Can formative assessment reduce second-language writing anxiety?
Yan Wang (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: evaluación

Resumen:

Although formative assessment has been gaining increasing importance, most of the previous research focuses more on how formative assessment affects the cognitive aspects of students’ learning process and less on the emotional aspects. This research aims to explore whether formative assessment can reduce second-language students’ writing anxiety and how different types of formative assessment achieve the results. The researcher designed a writing course according to Black and Wiliam’s theory of formative assessment, and integrated self-assessment, peer assessment, and teacher conferencing into a 17-week teaching schedule. By adopting a mixed-methods approach, the researcher measured second-language students’ writing anxiety before and after the program, and collected students’ perceptions on self-assessment, peer assessment, and...

Pluralism Behind Boredom Coping in Language Learning: Evidence From a Q Methodology Study
Mehdi Solhi, Athip Thumvichit, Mirosล‚aw Pawlak (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

The present study investigated how second or foreign language (L2) learners cope with boredom in class, using Q methodology. The participants were 40 undergraduate English majors (12 male, 28 female). By-person factor analysis identified three coping profiles, namely, acceptors , escapers , and strivers . The acceptors viewed coping as a personal responsibility and acknowledged boredom as a natural and temporary emotion. These learners reminded themselves of the value of the lesson, reflected on the causes of boredom, and planned to prepare for future situations, showing a reflective and mindful attitude. The escapers tackled boredom through mental or behavioral disengagement. They tended to distract themselves or share their feelings with peers. While they avoided confronting boredom directly, they neither blamed themselves nor the...

Examining fluctuations in the WTC of Japanese EFL speakers: Language proficiency, affective and conditional factors
Rintaro Sato (2023)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

Willingness to communicate (WTC), which plays a crucial role in second or foreign language learning, has a dynamic and complex nature, fluctuating during communicative events. This study examines how the situational WTC of four Japanese speakers of English as a foreign language (EFL) emerges and fluctuates, focusing on the roles of language proficiency and affective and conditional factors. Low-intermediate and advanced speakers were engaged in an interactive, communicative activity with an interlocutor. All utterances were recorded, transcribed, and analysed and combined with the qualitative data from participants’ self-ratings and a stimulated recall interview after the activity to assess fluctuations in WTC. The findings indicate that levels of WTC are influenced differently between low-intermediate and advanced speakers. Although...

Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: diferencias individuales

Resumen:

Ambiguity tolerance reflects learners’ abilities to accept unpredictable and unfamiliar contexts in language learning without frustration and discomfort. However, it has yet to be thoroughly explored when associated with engagement, motivation, and peer collaboration collaborative learning in course of English as a foreign language (EFL) learning. Relying on questionnaire survey data, this study adopts structural equation modeling techniques based on 1,200 Chinese high school students’ responses. The findings ascertain that engagement and volition significantly and positively predict ambiguity tolerance and learning effectiveness. Additionally, ambiguity tolerance predicts learning effectiveness. For peer collaborative learning, ambiguity tolerance and learning effectiveness are also critical predictors. They significantly and...

Demystifying positive second language writing experience: The role of writing self-efficacy and motivational dynamics
Haijing Zhang, Fangwei Huang (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: expresión escrita

Resumen:

Second language (L2) writing is a complex process involving cognitive, emotional, and linguistic activities, which might be shaped by learners’ personal traits and psychological states. However, limited effort has been devoted to reveal how different dimensions of writing self-efficacy and motivational constructs interact to influence positive L2 writing experiences, particularly in non-English contexts such as Chinese as a second language (CSL). To address this gap, this study draws on control-value theory to explore the influence of L2 writing self-efficacy (linguistic, performance, and self-regulatory efficacy) and motivational constructs (the ideal and ought-to L2 selves) on positive writing experience among CSL learners. This research employs a dual analytic approach, combining structural equation modeling (SEM) and psychological...

Exploring the differential effects of growth mindset on bilingual learning engagement: A concurrent embedded mixed-methods study
Xili Wu, Shuneng Zhong, Rong Miao (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

Although the positive relationship between growth language mindsets and engagement has been consistently supported in previous empirical studies, the literature is dominated by quantitative approaches in the English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) contexts, neglecting the triangulation of qualitative data delving into how learners perceive the contribution of growth mindsets to engagement. Such neglect is especially notable among multilingual learners. Further, it remains unknown which dimensions of growth language mindset were the most influential for specific dimensions of engagement and whether the pattern was different for English learning and language other than English (LOTE) learning. To fill the gaps, the current study adopted a concurrent embedded mixed-methods approach with questionnaires and interviews. A total of 464 Chinese...
